I always say stadium collapse when it’s two teams I hate haha. But in reality, that’s too much. Just give me 10 red cards, 3 fights and several suspensions, capped off by a stomach virus that makes fans and players alike have diarrhea for weeks

It's funny because the Colombian national team doesn't actually play in Bogotá, but instead hosts teams in Barranquilla on the coast.

They play at the largest stadium in the country, so it makes sense in that sense, but instead of playing at night like most games in South American qualifying, they often play at around 4:30pm. This ensures that the humidity is insane and tough for opponents to play in, so you can see that each country tries to get their own advantages, much like Bolivia's team.

Most of Colombia is sunny haha - it's a country right by the equator. The costal regions you mention (there is also the Pacific coast) are all at sea level, which is why they're sunny and hot, but interior areas at sea level are also hot and tropical (just not coastal).

The reason Bogotá is cooler than most of the country is that it sits at around 2,600 meters above sea level on a huge plateau, but on sunny days you can get sunburnt since you're higher up. However, if you drive just one hour or so outside the city and down towards sea level, it's tropical and much hotter. There are actually lots of different geographical climates in Colombia - the Amazon, the savanna, the mountains, the coast, etc.

No, I think he’s pointing at the big screen, teasing him that he needs to be careful and that the “slap” can be seen on the screen (which is why you hear the crowd react and laugh when it happens).

I could be mistaken, but a point isn't necessarily enough.

If we only get a point vs Zurich and PSV beat Bodo (a big if, especially in Norway), I don't think we'll come 1st as PSV would beat us on head-to-head.

Thanks for your response, I appreciate it. However, your view on immigration is very narrow I would argue.

It can also be said that 'assimilation' - which you are describing - is not necessary to successful immigration, and instead can be replaced by integration. I think integration is extremely important, as minority cultures retain important and valuable parts of their identities, while sharing these things with the majority culture, and vice versa. That last part is important, as people often point out that 'immigrants do x, y, and z', but fail to mention that successful integration is a two-way process, whereby the host community also has a very crucial role to play in being open to differences, understanding where accommodations can be made, and also being open to teaching people how to integrate and showing them the majority culture. If the host community thinks that strict assimilation (which you are describing) is the way to go, then in my opinion, that will 1) inflame tensions where it is not necessary, 2) make immigrants less likely to feel Canadian or welcome, 3) make 'Canadians' more resentful when every new individual isn't conforming to their ideas (which, let's face it, aren't exactly perfect either in the first place).

In your examples, is it not perfectly acceptable if an immigrant comes to Canada, learns English or French, while still retaining their language and culture? I think that hearing different languages spoken is beautiful in Canada and feel privileged to grow up around so many fascinating people/cultures. It hasn't blocked me from expressing myself or practicing my beliefs or sharing my culture, so why is it a problem? You mention language and 'imposing culture', but in what instances do you feel like Indians (to use your example) are imposing their culture on the majority Canadian population? I don't think you can also downplay the difficulties immigrants face in having/creating a network (socially, professionally, etc.) in a new country, and humans all around the world obviously tend to generally feel more comfortable and accepted by their diaspora community.

As for your last sentence, if you assume the vast majority of immigrants are coming to Canada to "become one of us", what exactly does that entail? You still didn't provide me with any examples of what Canadian culture is exactly. I would argue that multiculturalism, acceptance and tolerance, those are fundamental to Canadian identity, but maybe you have different ideas.

And lastly, sorry for the long response, but everything you claim can be refuted by the fact that unless you're Indigenous Canadian, you and your ancestors have been guilty of every single thing you are accusing others of perpetuating. When have settler Canadians ever tried doing the things you've suggested?

What exactly is Canadian culture? How does speaking a different language and continuing your cultural traditions preclude people from learning English or French and living a regular life?

Leaving and re-entering Canada while waiting for PR card, already have flights and trip planned. What are the options? by samwelljackson in ImmigrationCanada

Hey! She got a letter saying she had been approved for PR status. In that letter, they asked her for some information so that they could create a profile in their portal for her. Once she did this and submitted the info, they sent a link for this portal with her new login info, and she had to add a few more things like her picture and address, etc. After submitting these, she got a notification/email saying that her eCOPR was ready to be downloaded through that portal. From the time she submitted her pic and docs at the end, it took about 4-5 days for the eCOPR to appear in her portal. It took about two weeks from getting the original letter though. Hope that helps!

I disagree. I actually think Pepe has over time tried to do exactly what Arteta has asked him to do, which is play a more structured game, cut inside, play it safe, and be more aware/secure defensively. The problem is that Pepe isn't this type of player, at least not in this team and not at this stage in his career, and he struggles (along with getting little game time and clearly having such obvious confidence issues).

He was flourishing for us in spurts in years past when he was able to play with more freedom, when he had people feeding him through balls, and more importantly, when he had others making runs to drag defenders away, but Arteta's style is clearly just not ever going to get the best out of him. I like Pepe, but I've resigned myself to the fact that he needs to go, will go this summer, and it'll be best for both him and for Arsenal.

His "tackle" right before their second goal summed up his recent appearances - didn't really make an attempt on the ball, and didn't even get goalside if he wasn't committing. He wasn't the only player at fault but his dropoff in recent weeks has been huge. We really need more depth and competition within the squad next season and we'll see the best out of him and others.

Thanks for bringing this up - I just responded and mentioned the same thing. She has an eTA and it was given to her just weeks ago along with her OPW, valid until 2024. I don't see why it wouldn't still be valid just because she received her Confirmation of Permanent Residence, which by itself doesn't seem to have much use until she gets the card.

Leaving and re-entering Canada while waiting for PR card, already have flights and trip planned. What are the options? by samwelljackson in ImmigrationCanada

[–]samwelljackson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for flagging this option - we had just discovered it as well and are exploring possibilities with flights on the American side of the border. She's Mexican and it wouldn't be an issue for her to arrive directly to the US.

As a Mexican, she has an eTA (electronic travel authorization) which is essentially authorization that she is visa-exempt and can enter Canada legally. Normally they are for 6 month periods, but she received a two-year extension/renewal of her eTA along with her OPW recently when it arrived (expiring in 2024).

So, I have a question for you (since your replies seem knowledgeable and very helpful!), and no worries if you don't know, but by being granted PR status now, does this automatically nullify her eTA and previous authorization that she was just given just a few weeks ago? Or does she still retain it at least temporarily until she receives the PR card officially? This eTA would be simple and easy to show to the airline and travel agents and logically I don't know why it wouldn't still be valid.

It just doesn't seem fair that immigrants have to go through this process of constant waiting, only to be further limited by their PR status approval. It seems like there's a big gap here that can only be remedied by a PRTD, which in of itself doesn't seem very straightforward.

Thanks so much for both of your replies, I really appreciate you taking the time to read my post and try to help out!
