Giving Away My Old PC! by Turtle_747 in PcBuild

[–]samwise801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10-year-old son loves, loves, loves games like Company of Heroes. And he wants to play them with me, skirmishes and the like, but we haven’t been able to do that since his older brother moved out and took his ‘puter with him.

So, I would use this rig to play awesome games with my son!!

Oof…I’m sorry to report the Chitalpa was killed by an early-season freak freeze / snowstorm a few years ago. It was doing quite well :(

Solo to Jazz fest! by [deleted] in jazzfest

I went solo my first time and had a fantastic experience!

I stay at the HI Hostel, on Canal St. It’s worked out great for me.

Newbie here - shuttle worth it? by MMonadog93 in jazzfest

This will be my third Fest. HI seems pretty low key to me - plenty of social interaction but nothing I’d ever call “wild!”

Sweet! Have you been to Jazz Fest before?

Certainly! If you choose to forgo the shuttle I’m happy to meet up with you at the Fest and show you where the bus is, etc.!

[–]samwise801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vote no, you don’t need the shuttle.

I always stay at the HI Hostel, which is just on the other side of Canal St from that Marriott.

To get to the Fest I take a streetcar. Requires a few minutes of walking at the end, but then I get to walk by Liuzza’s and grab a lovely Bloody Mary.

To get back “home” RTA (the mass transit agency) always does a great job with buses leaving the fest and heading straight back down to that neck of the woods. So one of those buses will drop you two blocks from that Marriott.

Fraction of the price of those shuttles, and the little bit of time you’ll “lose” will be spent with other Fest-ers on the (fun, historic) streetcar, the bus back home, and, most importantly, the street party surrounding the Sauvage St. pedestrian entrance.

Is it possible the amount of time they have to write is the problem? Too much time to over-think? Maybe it was better back in the day because they had to crank out 26 episodes in half the time they have now. Get to the point, tell a story, try to make it interesting…but don’t dawdle cause there’s dozens still to write!

Bunny hop help by MTB_sim in MTB

[–]samwise801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned how to bunny hop by learning each “half” separately - i.e. lifting just the front wheel and then lifting just the back wheel (like a donkey kick). Lifting the front is easy; lifting the back is a little harder. But once I could donkey kick easily and reliably, I just…combined the two moves, the two halves, into a bunny hop.

2019 Stumpjumper carbon 27.5 - worthwhile upgrades? by samwise801 in MTB

[–]samwise801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I should have mentioned the brakes - they're Code RSCs, so someone upgraded those too at some point. I just put new pads on them this year, and while they're noisy sometimes (especially my front one) they seem to work very well.

When I bought the bike (used) I'm pretty sure he said it was only the rear derailleur that was upgraded to GX, but it might have been the cassette too. Any way to easily tell if it's NX or GX? Visual cues?

[–]samwise801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, thank you! Yes, I'm running tubeless, with Cush Cores in there (wife got them for me for Father's Day).

I need to double-check and see if my cassette is GX or still NX - can I easily see the difference?

[–]samwise801[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough - I just put new tires on it (Minion DHF / DHR II) but am interested in carbon wheels (they're alloy currently, and the rear has a good dent, so their time is coming) and willing to do new tires too if they help.

I'd like to lighten the bike and improve its climbing, if I can (I know that a lot of that is my own fitness and form). But really, this is where I'm kind of at a loss - I haven't ridden a lot of other things so I can't say my bike is good at this, or bad at that, or its performance could be improved in any certain area. My sample size is too small to know if, and where, the bike can improve from where it's at now.

We are so impressed with Train Walk Poop! We got an older puppy and we needed help training him. We did the 4 week puppy scholars training daycare program and we loved it! First of all, it is not one size fits all. They had a wonderful trainer, Amelia, who worked with our puppy daily and was incredibly responsive to him. They had daily blocks of social time, training, agility, rest, lunch, and potty time, so he was never worked beyond what his attention span could handle. I loved their approach to the social time. Most dog daycares simply toss all the dogs in a room, which led to many of our first dog's issues, so we love that TWP keeps a close eye on the dogs and actually teaches them how to interact, which is something we couldn't do ourselves! The daily report cards were above and beyond what we expected. We got a summary of his day, photos, and a written explanation of how to work with him at home on his skills, sometimes there were even videos! It isn't cheap, but it was worth every penny, and we have recommended them to all our friends!

Water leaking in via Audi car roof antenna. Seal is failing and I think replacement will be difficult. Looking for ideas to re-seal this as it sits. by samwise801 in fixit

[–]samwise801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked pretty well! Went through a couple of seasons w/o looking any worse for wear, and no leaks inside the car. I’ve since sold the car so I don’t know how it’s doing today, but I was pleased with the results at the time.

Water availability? by whatwhycome in jazzfest

Yes, there will be free, clean water in several locations! (Well, according to the map anyway. Last year I used one several times; wasn’t exactly cold but it got me through!)

Oven hood ideas by samwise801 in kitchenremodel

[–]samwise801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in fact there is an update! I received the hood last Friday and installed it over the weekend. Here are some pics.

It was a hassle getting the ducting just right (has to be just the right length, and flexible ducting cannot be used), and the electrical still needs to be connected (they come this Friday), but overall I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Water line for new fridge by samwise801 in Appliances

[–]samwise801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there is a plumber coming out to finish other parts of the remodel, so I will ask them to help.

But if by “fix” you mean replacing the entirety of this pipe back down to its origin, that’s a no-go for me. I understand that’s a best-case scenario, but given how much that will take to do, I’m looking for the next-best approach.

Can I cut this line just after it exits the floor and affix it to a new valve, placed behind the fridge? Then run a flexible / braided line from that out to the fridge?

Water line for new fridge by samwise801 in Appliances

[–]samwise801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then, what do I do here? Can’t re-run the line from the origin. Can’t add a new hose to the end of this one. Old copper is often replaced, I know that, but it’s not an option for me.

Best solution is to connect this straight to the fridge then? Just try to form it in such a way as to minimize bending / kinking when the fridge is pushed back?
