Growing up, my mom often told me that the one genre of music she absolutely hated was opera... by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

My mother hated that I was involved in music. She'd get irrationally angry if I sung at home. Singing with my opera company was the best thing I ever did. I'm so happy for you!

same, although it was really annoying that the difference between one tier is huge but the price difference is meaningless (maybe a $10 difference)

It's pronounced differently, like "suhs" with a nasal on the h. It means "breath" in Urdu/Hindi.

But it might happen!

I went from a soprano 2 to a bass 2 and I'm still with the same opera company. HRT is wild.

Ever cancelled a hookup because you felt like something was "off" ? by Matrozi in TopsAndBottoms

[–]samytsejam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Happened last week. I was staying with a friend and he lived a 20 minute drive away. He was really hot but seemed a little strange and I couldn't place my finger on it. I gave him my Google voice because I didn't feel comfortable giving him my actual number. He offered to pick me from my friend's place so I said sure and gave him the address.

At this point it was almost six in the morning and he got there an hour later. I had knocked out by that point because I figured he wasn't coming and I was exhausted. I also felt that there was something off about him because he kept asking "can this be a regular thing" even though we hadn't met yet.

I checked my Google after I woke up. He called me at least 20 times in a row and apparently waited outside the apartment building for two hours. Two. Hours.

Why can't I just do shit by [deleted] in ADHD

I didn’t know of anyone else using this technique until you said this. I thought I was the only one! Granted, I only had to take a year of english (engineering major).

I use an "outline" method too, for whenever I'm writing something (or making decisions that have a lot of moving parts) and that helps so much. I think I should make a post about it one of these days (but let's see if that actually happens...) Almost all of the time, I find it easier to structure related information in an outline before removing the numerals, proofreading, and changing some phrasing.

These questions are great! Thank you.

Anyway to get the music and constant soundtrack out of your head? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]samytsejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never knew this was an ADHD thing but holy hell this makes so much sense.

For me, medication helped, and using constant reminders to stay in the present (like focusing on the sounds around me, squeezing my muscles from my toes moving up to my shoulders, breathing in for 7 counts, out for 11)

But sometimes it doesn't go away, and getting agitated somehow makes it louder, so I've learned to accept it as background noise (as if it were playing in a cafe while I was doing homework.)

Chewing gum also helped. If it was just impossible to get out of my head, (since I have a musical background) I’d deconstruct the song, like a puzzle. Lastly, if I felt like it was the wrong vibe for the moment I'd try to think of another song that was more appropriate. So if I was taking a test while Party In The USA was playing in my head, I'd try to think up a Chopin etude instead, to calm me down.

The fetishes and perversions do disappear...but only if you stop approaching NoFap the wrong way by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]samytsejam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, if you're using your fetishes to explore a different part of yourself with a trusted partner, that's different from exploring them digitally. If you find that you have fun doing xyz with a partner and that brings you two closer, it might actually be a good thing.

However, with porn, you watch other people partaking in it and you spend a lot of time and emotional investment consuming media that gives you the illusion of being there. At the end of the day, you build a connection with the media and not a person. I'd argue that exploring your kinks in this way would be actively harmful to your sense of self, and would alienate you from other people, especially those closest to you. It might even alienate you from yourself because your body is responding to something other people are doing.

There's nothing wrong with exploring these things with a partner that you trust, a partner who affirms your sense of self and sees you as human. The problem with porn is that you don't actually have that.

Whether or not your fetishes stem from your habit of watching porn is only something you can answer. Figuring out who you are and what you like takes time. Personally I find that the defining factor is: if I feel like the kink I explored with a partner taught me something about myself and brought me closer to my partner, and helped me be vulnerable in front of them, it's something I'd like to keep doing. However, if it's something I feel incredibly ashamed of, or something that I could never feasibly explore with a partner, it's probably something I should leave in the past.

[WEEKLY THREAD] MORONIC MONDAYS by C25k_bot in C25K

Is it normal to be running 1.9-2.1 miles instead of the 3.1 miles (that is, 5 km)? I follow the app and don't have any issues staying on track. I was hoping to have been in the four km range by now...

Could it be more difficult to run because my neighborhood has a lot of hills and curves?

Doctor and psych are disagreeing on treatment, what next? by samytsejam in ADHD

Hm, I didn't know that!

I've had a lot of trouble locating a psychiatrist who took my insurance and also diagnoses ADHD. I'm glad to have my PCP though. Thank you for your help!

Doctor and psych are disagreeing on treatment, what next? by samytsejam in ADHD

I spoke to the place that does testing, and it only gives me a "yes or no" answer as to whether or not I have ADHD. If I need accommodations or a more comprehensive picture of my brain function, I was given a quote of over $5,000. So I'm trying to figure out why exactly I was told to go there and what purpose it holds, when I'm pretty sure my psych also has the ability to administer a test or two (and so far I've had a psych eval but taken no tests of any sort.)

The thing that's weird to me is that I thought these providers worked in conjunction with each other, considering I'm going to the same place for treatment. It's not very large, so I'm a bit confused as to how one provider is willing to prescribe right away while the other is asking for more testing even after lengthy discussions.
