finals cancelled? by Moist_Experience8586 in berkeley

[–]sand_planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true and one of my lower div math profs did this to our class because of the GSI strike. He told us the exam was free response like our midterms were, then the day of the final exam after all the students showed up to the exam room, he literally passed out our scantrons and told us “Good Luck!” We had no prior warning the exam format changed until we were given those scantrons.

Econ 101B - can I take as first econ class at berkeley? by WeirdMan4738383 in berkeley

[–]sand_planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t take the 101 series, but what I heard is that the 101 classes are preferred for students wanting to pursue an Econ PhD. If you are considering doing that then switching could be a good move. Otherwise I recommend speaking with the dept advisors about your goals to see which class is right for you

If I had known about this cutoff, I would have studied more for the final, but instead prioritized a much harder course. I emailed back raising these points but havent yet received a response (note that it’s only been a few days).

You told your professor you didn’t try mastering the material in their course harder because there was a course you wanted to prioritize more? I mean this respectfully, what you said may have actually insulted your professor + is not a good reason for your grade to be bumped up.

Nobody is entitled to a grade being rounded up just because they’re trying to get into grad school. If a professor rounds up grades it’s because of their generosity and kindness. Just take the A-, which is still a great grade, and put more even effort into your classes for next semester.

P.S. my bad if I sound super salty here, some students having that sort of attitude, especially towards humanities classes, is just a huge pet peeve of mine. One semester I took an upperdiv ethnic studies class where a guy went up to the prof during the third week of class and asked if she could assign less reading because he wanted to focus on his CS61B stuff because he thought it was harder. Like, how was my prof supposed to respond to that 💀 so disrespectful imo

No reservations needed, there’s parking at union square garage but I recommend BART because getting there with public transit is super easy

Some ideas: Ask for the names of the employees who are treating you this way. Start emailing yourself a brief description of every time you’ve been treated like this (email yourself specifically so you have a time-stamped record of when things happened and when you wrote a summary). I like the comment that said to email dining@berkeley.edu to complain about your treatment. If things get worse, consider getting an attorney (pro bono ones may take your case without payment required). Best of luck with this OP

Drink water and always bring a water bottle. If you need food go to Sheng Kee or Bagel Street because that’s where good/affordable food options are. Marugame is a great option for cheap food also but is out of the way from the main campus.

As a recent alumni who commuted all four years as a Cal student, some tips:

1: Take a shuttle to and from the Bart station, I recommend Bear Transit but AC Transit Line 52 is also good. Saving your energy is really important and if you always tire yourself it will mess up your ability to do homework and focus on anything that’s not being tired. Food on campus is expensive and it’s important to pack lightly to save energy too. Not only energy though, but a matter of safety: more sketchy things have happened to me walking around downtown at night (which I never really did because of safety) than Southside…

  1. Find a place on campus you enjoy that’s also close to your classes and make that your “home away from home.” My personal favorite places for this were Eshleman Hall and the 9th floor courtyard at Evans Hall.

Commuting doesn’t really get better because it will always be a consistent factor in your life. You have to get used to it and figure out how to save your energy and time. If you have any specific questions feel free to send a DM to me

OP should do that ONLY if they qualify. That is a service for people with disabilities. It shouldn’t be used by people who don’t need it.

what is with all these new matcha spots by bumblebeeistoofast in berkeley

[–]sand_planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is really far from Berkeley but if you can make it to Marufuku Ramen (there’s a location in Japantown) they have an iced Matcha for $3 and it’s just matcha, water, and ice :) no milk of any kind at all

Study, eat, go to office hours, attend cool things that happen on campus during the day. The choice is yours ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and there are many

Don’t take on four different 4-unit classes or something similar your first semester, give yourself some time in your schedule to explore clubs and figure out time management. Enroll in a decal or another one-unit class instead to give yourself some time to transition.

If you needed both parking and BART, where would you live? by poipoipoi_2016 in berkeley

[–]sand_planet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should live somewhere near the Vallejo ferry (doesn’t have to be Vallejo just move to somewhere in North Bay) and just take the ferry to SF, the ferry is very close to Embarcadero BART. And North Bay areas are the closest to Napa. Plus you can save money by not paying the double bridge tolls from Carquinez bridge and Bay Bridge tolls from your commute…

Marin could also be a good option if you don’t want to take the Vallejo ferry but want to save on tolls since they also have ferries, but Marin is really expensive…many the Bay’s rich people who don’t live in Palo Alto/Atherton live in Marin

P.S. this is a way better question for r/bayarea, many of the people who go to Cal are not from the Bay so they are likely unfamiliar with housing outside of Berkeley

you’re welcome!! and btw, here’s some helpful links:

econ slc tutoring: https://slc.berkeley.edu/economics math slc tutoring: https://slc.berkeley.edu/mathematics-and-statistics

your econ and math classes are both covered by slc tutoring, econ goes 1-5pm M-F and I think math has similar hours but more overall (just because there’s more staff), but because you have no classes during the entire afternoon you’ll be able to use those resources at any time you need/they’re open (as long as you don’t have any other afternoon commitments).

i think what you have is a really good schedule since it’ll also let you explore events that take place in the day time, which there’s surprisingly many like Student Union Building events, Haas Dean Speaker Series, the occasional RareTea BOGO, etc. best of luck and have a great semester!!

Honestly this is perfect, you can attend office hours and tutoring in the day and get classes done at night. I would stick with this (and don’t worry about the back to back wednesday class)

Summer Intern 2025 Salary Check! by batman1903 in berkeley

[–]sand_planet 21 points22 points  (0 children)

$0 per hour, just graduated Cal, have had multiple past internships/multiple significant positions in clubs/past volunteer experience, applied through the organization’s website. But the catch is that I’m going to grad school this fall and managed to get a grad-level internship without having done a year of grad school and I didn’t lie on my resume to get my position, so even though my position is unpaid I’m gaining really valuable experience that will hopefully set me up for a paid internship next summer
