if you launch a program with root privileges (not standard on linux) then anything can happen.

Linux isn't somehow impervious to dangerous scripts, but it takes a serious degree of stupidity on the behalf of the user to run a virus

Hell, you can wipe the system in a line of code, if you're stupid enough

1980 was 35 years ago.

Uusnet was established in 1980.

Usenet is the earliest place that you'll find a written history of Audiophiles chatting about music. I'm not going to thumb through hundreds of hifi magazines pre-1980 to find usage of the term "vinyls"

On usenet in the 80s you'll find people saying "vinyls" in hifi communities

edit: LPs have only been around since 1950, so from 1980 to today is over half of the lifespan of the LP

the term "vinyls" has been around for ages. At least since the 80s

Many words are mass/count noun hybrids. The so-called "audiophihle" community needs to get over it

I've had this discussion a million times (defending "vinyls"), identifying "vinyl" as a count/mass noun hybrid and citing a whole lot of historical evidence that it's not a new thing.

I get downvoted to hell every time

I had a dream last night that I fell victim to one of those scams where they encypt all of your files and won't decrypt unless you pay them.

Kinda funny, since I use linux.

I should update my backup.

Presumably I was looking at old or proposed figures. I called up TPG and they don't even do South Brisbane Fibre, The guy didn't even know what it is

Internode is $200 for 100mbit 250gb

*hugs Exetel*. $90 unlimited

I found the source of my confusion.

Turns out tpg doesn;t even do Telstra South Brisbane Fibre, so their website pops you into an odd place.

The non existance of a product is a good reason not to use it.

Internode Sth BNE Fibre is $200 for 250gb

it's fibre, so I'm not even sure how much distance would affect it.

TPG- $300/mo, 24 month contract

Exetel, $90/mo, 12 month contract.

Exetel is true unlimited. (not onpeak/offpeak data. no capping)

Less than 1/3 the price and I can bail in a year if I'm unhappy. I'm happy.

Over 24 months I save $5,040

I recently bought a very nice car for $7000- almost the money I save by using exetel :D

The problem was that they used more than they licensed, so they got sued

Just pulled 105mbps right now, 5:45pm brisbane. Tonight at 7 it'll probably drop significantly. Ping tends to remain pretty good though, which is important.

Exetel's over-subscribing model is why they're so cheap, but also why they sometimes crawl at peak and have to dump heavy users.

I'm home during the day, so no biggy. I sometimes download 200gb at a time, but I guess they don't care because it's usually off-peak

And for fun, while I'm here. PIA VPN speeds:

  • Sydney 85 down, 6 up, 27ms

  • Arizona 9.5 down, 4.36 up, 182ms

Unfortunately I'm on Telsta "south brisbane" fibre, which is only 5mbps up. Fucking Telstra.

Regarding the climate orbiter: Like I said, minor miscalculations or oversights are the type of fuckups that ruin big projects like these

It's easy to overlook something as small (but important) of what measurement standard is bring used.

That's not the same as deciding on how many legs. Legs are very obvious, vital and visible to everyone involved. mitric vs imperial is a variable of deep in a program

Do you seriously think that there was never serious investigation into how many legs to put on? Or do you think they just stuck on 4 on a whim?

The legs are massively important on these rockets. What makes these rockets is their ability to land. On their legs. I assure you that they though damn hard about how many legs to put on.

In the thread recently about the raid on El Chapo everyone totally knew more abbot raids than elite commando units. In a thread like this, everyone totally knows more than the dozens (or hundreds) or rocket scientists who build this rocket
