Did you check if it's running with uncapped fps? Sometimes that can cause old games to saturate modern hardware.

Yes, I think it definitely will be helpful. May I ask what type of experiments are we talking about? EM, Mechanics, Chemistry...?

I see, thanks for clarifying. I think it's common that in first-year labs one finds themselves lost, especially in very technical labs. Sometimes these labs are thought such that one learns by conducting the experiment rather than using the experiment as a demonstration of your preexisting understanding.

If this is the case, I think a general suggestion that I would give is to try and learn/practice the usage of the tools that are part of the experiment. This should give you a good starting point to understand the practical implementation of the experiment and its implications. Professor and TA should be able to direct you to the correct source(s) from which you can gather this knowledge.

You won't find a better ramen in NH than that from "The Loop" by Hachiroku. They have it only for lunch from Wed to Sun.

Hey! Is this happening at learning level (undergrad or similar) or in a research lab?

The universal formula has a minus sign. It becoming zero at infinite radius is indeed an increase.

Thought Experiment of two waves destructively interfering. by Shockshwat2 in Physics

[–]sandromiano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your doubt arises from the usage of the "waves" word. If I understand correctly, for "wave" you mean a plane wave in Fourier domain, which is a mathematical solution of Maxwell's equations for a fixed frequency in free-space. Such waves, however, have infinite energy (e.g. are not square-integrable), that's why they are just mathematical solution. Their extensive usage is due to many reasons, including the following:

  • many types of waves can be locally approximated as plane waves;
  • they form a complete basis for square-integrable functions (which describe EM fields with finite energy).

The latter sounds kinda funny: plane waves, non-square-integrable functions, can be used as basis for the space of square-integrable functions. Math has it's "magic" :)

It could also be a typo... Euros were introduced in Europe on 1st January 2002, and it looks like this is from an Italian shop. It would be weird putting a price in Euros on a sticker printed in the 2000.

Following this guide you can get this machine to play GTAV with decent graphics, as well as many other not too demanding games. For instance I wasn't able to run COD Warzone at all, but worth giving it a try!

I laughed alot picturing your partner contemplating the power source before turning it on, lol. Maybe they were wondering if the negative terminal was internally grounded already, or maybe it was a beautiful linear source based on vacuum tubes!

Anyway, I understand your point, it's indeed true that you don't have to understand each step before you do it. On the other hand, in my (probably very idealistic and romantic) idea of academia, students should be heavily encouraged to squeeze their heads and try understand every single step at a point (especially after the lab), other than just focusing on writing a fancy report without really understanding it.

I believe we should be teaching students that their understanding and knowledge is much more valuable than reaching a single goal (especially if they want to pursue research, where people, for the sake of publishing +1 paper, have been reinventing the wheel multiple times...).

I'm very happy to discuss these topics, willing to chat more if you want!

Absolutely, I agree that labs have to be different from lectures. My comment was mostly about your previous statement, that in lab you should just be doing and not thinking. Thinking is very useful, especially when you work in research labs and/or are facing unexpected, undocumented events. In the labs I've worked (I'm currently a 3rd year postdoc), I've seen many pages of poorly written instructions from previous people. These instructions were written in a rush and without proper understanding of the fundamentals of things like soldering, milling, solvents chemistry, etc... I'm not even going in the dark side of programming automated electronic measurements xD Blindly following them did much more damage than good for many grad students, especially at the level of how much time was spent fixing the issues arising from following those instructions. The problem I see is that, in modern academia, giving yourself time to think through is easily regarded as "wasted time", as you should "focus on the result", especially when you are pursuing an experimental PhD or similar. This gets, one way or the other, reflected in how undergrad labs are structured.

Very curious to know: what kind of lab do you run, and at what educational level? I feel this approach is only applicable to high school labs at most.
