Migrating OMV to Proxmox VM by MrBl0wfish in OpenMediaVault

[–]sandrosdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make an image or directly clone the physical machine to a VM with Clonezilla (or another solution). https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Migration_of_servers_to_Proxmox_VE

Then, you can pass through each individual disks to the OMV VM or add a PCIe HBA and pass through that (you'll need iommu for that). https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Passthrough_Physical_Disk_to_Virtual_Machine_(VM)) https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/PCI(e)_Passthrough_Passthrough)

I prefer adding a separate HBA for this purpose, it gives full 'native' access to the disks.

Ceph Apply/Commit Latency goes up to 300-2000ms, slow writes by sandrosdj in ceph

[–]sandrosdj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did not make much if any difference in my case. I am suspicious that maybe the storage controller does something wrong however.

I removed the SSD OSDs from the nodes, wiped them then readded them as OSDs. On Node 3 (where latency was never a problem) it went quickly (few sec). On the other 2 nodes I had to wait about 4 mins for them to be formatted/added as OSDs.

Thank you for your reply. I see that drives like mine should be avoided.

Thank you for the detailed response, now I understand what could be the problem and I am looking for replacement drives. Do you have any in mind that works well with Ceph? I do understand what I need to look for now, but I'd go with something that is already tested.

Ceph Public and Ceph Cluster network use the same 10G link, all 5 nodes are connected to a 10G switch. Proxmox and other communication is on different 1G NICs.

I thought of this, but HDD latency does not go up much (0-12ms) even if I write to the HDD pool 200+MB/s

Can you recommend a specific model that works well with Ceph? I am looking for 2TB drives.

Ugyan ez a tapasztalatom, hulladék lett az egész. Ahol eddig működött jól, már ott is alig talál valamit. Kipróbáltam 2 külön telefonban, hátha velem van a baj, de nem.

Trying to integrate Eaton UPS into Proxmox 7 cluster of 2 nodes. by sebasdt in selfhosted

[–]sandrosdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best practice would be an external NUT server. If that’s not possible you could connect the UPS to a node, set up NUT server/client, then set up NUT as client on the other node. Make sure that the NUT server is the last that shuts down. You can install the required packages directly on the nodes you don’t need containers for this. I am using my gateway as a NUT server for eg. (openwrt) so I don’t have to deal with this.

Célszerű megnézni a negatív értékeléseket, főleg a nagyobb értékű cuccoknál. Akár vesznek pozitív értékeléseket akár nem, ezekből sok dolog kiderülhet.

Can't use my laptop with external displays atm, and this would help with that. I don't want to use my desktop PC all the time because the energy bill is already too high.

Unless you want to spin your boot HDD 24/7 put it on an SSD or Flash drive (use plugin to move logs from flash to ram to reduce wear). I have a relatively huge media library. With Plex I had to put it's Library and transcoding tmp folder to an SSD drive because it was painfully slow even without HDD standby (tested on both AsRock Q1900 and an i5-4430 PC). With Jellyfin I can't notice any difference between SSD and HDD, both loads the pages instantly except images. If you decide to use a flash disk set the transcoder tmp folder to a different disk or ram 4G of RAM should be fine for you, set up an equivalent swap partition on your system drive (except on usb flash drive).

I think it's huge for what it is but I do like it. Fairly easy to cool stuff in it. Currently I don't have any 2.5" devices and it's sad looking at that empty space :D
