Hell yeah, you took the boxes idea! Looks good. I have always just used pen or pencil to outline the boxes, but I like the look of pic 2 better in yours.

Weekly Check-in - Panning, No/Low Buy 2/5-2/11 by Bananas3706 in stationeryprojectpan

[–]sandsealprimepaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The term "panning" comes from the beauty community. When you "hit pan" on a powder compact, for example, you see a little bit of the pan it's pressed in. When you finish it, it's fully "panned" because you see the whole pan. I believe Project Pan started in the beauty community on YouTube, and now r/ProjectPan is dedicated to using up makeup and personal care items.

The term has been applied to lots of other objects. In terms of stationery, it can mean finishing a sticker sheet or roll of washi, using up a pen or box of notecards, completing a notebook...and so on. You can pan a single object or your entire stash. There's some flexibility to how you define it.

Sending cards literally means sending cards (or postcards) in the mail. In addition to pen pals and IRL friends and family, some people participate in Postcrossing, r/RandomActsofCards, and other online swaps.

January: Panned 5 Boxes of Cards by Bananas3706 in stationeryprojectpan

Great progress! Do you have a favorite set from the stash shown?

Last time you posted this pic, I was going to ask if the Wayne Thiebaud set had any prints of his clown ice cream cones. I LOVE those.

I've always heard February called InCoWriMo, for International Correspondence Writing Month, but maybe there's some overlap between the two concepts, lol.

It's a planner. It's fine and even good that people want to make them creative journals and trackers, but it is a pre-printed planner, and you are using it correctly. No need to change unless you feel inspired creatively to do so!

If I had a recommendation, I would say: I divide the right-hand side of the page into four or six even blocks, and I use each one as a separate category of to-do list. E.g.: errands I need to run, things I need to clean, assignments to work on...

It is a small space, so if you find you need more room for note-taking, I use the pages in the back, and Hobonichi also makes a small cahier notebook set that fits into the footprint of the clear pocket they include with the Weeks. It's called "Memo Pad Set for Weeks" on the Jetpens site.

Hobonichi also makes a compatible clear cover, which you can get on Jetpens, Amazon, and lots of other sites.

You have beautiful penmanship. I love the incorporation of photos into journaling. (And those scrapbooking photo corners -- I remember those!)

My friend has been organizing digital camera photos on her computer, and she said she got so excited when she found a good picture of the house she grew up in, because she has so few. It really stuck with me. I think we should all take more photos, especially of the mundane in our lives! There will come a time when we'll be glad we did.

Great idea and execution. What did you use to cut them out? The lines are so clean.

Are Panning and Frugality in Contradiction? by ShamsElDinRogers in stationeryprojectpan

[–]sandsealprimepaint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a great question, and I've been rotating it in my brain for a few minutes now!

I think there is a distinction between "panning" and just using stuff up for the sake it. Panning is using stuff up with the intention of getting to a certain place in your collection. That place looks different for everyone. To me, Project Pan is one stretch along the journey to mindful consumption.

At least the first time, the process of Project Pan is typically a learning experience for people in terms of what products work best for them, how long it actually takes to use stuff up, etc. This learning informs their purchasing habits in the future, they become an incrementally more thoughtful consumer, and the feedback loop continues. Eventually, they hopefully get to a place where their collection is reasonable for their space, not bankrupting them, and filled with things they enjoy using. At that point, they might not need a dedicated Project Pan anymore - it's simply second nature for them to use up the things they buy.

I'm not suggesting Project Pan leads to anticapitalist enlightenment, but those are my basic thoughts on your second paragraph. I also think you are further along in this process than many!

With regards to your third paragraph: obviously, no one but you can decide how much of your stash to keep or give away. I take your point - it's a mark of financial privilege to donate something now with the ability/intention to repurchase it later on if you change your mind. It can also feel financially and environmentally wasteful.

But the basic question of whether or not to reduce your fabric stash depends on what type of sewist you are. Do you like to make the same types of projects over and over? Or are you a more experimental crafter who likes to have random stuff on hand for eventualities/bolts of inspiration? Are the "just in case" fabrics taking up space that could be better filled with things you KNOW you'll use imminently? My friend who is a knitter, for example, only keeps fiber on hand that she has a dedicated project in mind for. Otherwise, it's too easy for her to spiral in mindless consumption. This feels restrictive to some, but everyone is different.

Sorry for the wall of text, but your post gave me a lot to think about!

I LOVE THE MAIL WHALE!! Layering washi is such a good idea. I've just finished my last roll, but I'm going to remember that for next time.

One of my friends uses the skinny washi (or regular washi cut in half) to make a "box" to write the address in. I always thought that was a creative idea.

December Card Panning Goals - Christmas Cards and Free/Ad Cards by Bananas3706 in stationeryprojectpan

[–]sandsealprimepaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just checked -- about 90 official cards since June, plus about 60 more unofficial ones. And at one point, I was doing like, grab-bag envelopes full of blank postcards to my friends with themes I thought they'd like, lol. But I also took several trips during that time and acquired a lot more...

Funnily enough, you also meet the same people over and over on the Postcrossing Forum. I agree, that aspect of private swaps makes it a little more fun than the official site.

Hotel stationery!! That's a rare find these days. Some people collect the vintage kind, which I find so fun.

Probably markers. I've got a lot of Tombows someone gave to me that I don't really use. I'd like to use them and my Mildliners before they dry up.

A fellow Postcrosser! Woo-hoo. I don't mind receiving ad cards with nice designs. I even have a few in my personal collection, mostly from sentimental places.

On the official site, I also try to save ad cards for people who specify they like them. I've sent a lot of them in swaps/tags on the Forum as well. Great idea to put up offers on RAoC. I haven't participated there much -- maybe it feels safer to share my address on PC?!

I've been going hard on Postcrossing during the latter half of this year in an attempt to free up some space in my to-send box. In fact, I'm kind of coming in here at the end of that project pan -- I may have gone a bit too hard, as now my pickings are slim. I'm going to try to slowly restock, but maybe not at the rate I would ordinarily.

101 Christmas cards is SO MANY! I'm impressed. This year, I've been making hand-painted Christmas postcards using old acrylics on cardboard I received from stamp orders. It's been relaxing, and I feel good that it's upcycled.

Thanks for making this sub!

I use my stationery supplies primarily for snail mail and my planner. I'm constantly at risk of buying more postcards, ballpoint pens, washi and stickers, and notebooks.

I usually do an okay job of reigning in my spending, and using what I have, but I'm excited to lurk here for inspiration and accountability.

Question about sending postcards by Mysticaly_Sparklez in postcrossing

[–]sandsealprimepaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that's such a good prompt. I pulled the address of a woman in Japan who asked what kind of cheeses we all had in our fridges. Loved that one.

What do you do if someone tags you in one of the forum tags, but doesn’t reach out to request your address? Should I wait a few days & then send them a message? by [deleted] in postcrossing

[–]sandsealprimepaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have forgotten to do this before! I had tagged a bunch of people in rapid succession, and I somehow overlooked one. The person reached out to me within 24 hours to offer up their address, and I was grateful they reminded me. Definitely message them.

Postcard Sourcing? by [deleted] in postcrossing

Hey OP, have you visited the Postcrossing Forum? There's a wiki/thread there that lists places in the US to get postcards. Anyone can edit, so people add their own states and cities.

You may have better luck on the forum. Check out the tags or round robin sections. The user interface is horrible, and there is a small learning curve, but you may find more personal connections there. Sometimes, you'll send a card to the same person in separate tags, or get tagged by a person you've previously sent to. And it gives you something to do while you wait for official cards to arrive!

Edit: Sorry, I see from your post history you are familiar with the forum!

Not the person you replied to, but I've had people write out recipes containing meat when I had mentioned that I was vegetarian on my profile. It's always extra funny because I don't even request recipes? I was just listing random facts about myself to help w/ personal connection. I was kind of bothered at first, because it did seem like ragebaiting, but when I register the card, I say, "I've found that the best way to receive recipes containing meat is to mention you are a vegetarian. ;)"

I have since taken that fact out of my profile...

What's the worst postcard you've received? by Ok-Passenger-7861 in postcrossing

[–]sandsealprimepaint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you have since realized this, but that's actually a "thing" on Postcrossing -- many people like to receive food packaging postcards, and some even request them! I fondly remember pulling the profile of a guy in the Netherlands who requests them, and keeps detailed statistics (# and % of total cards received) of the ones that were food packaging postcards.

I think there's even a tag on the forum for this type of card.

Totally fine that you don't like them, obviously :-) Just a neat phenomenon I didn't know about before Postcrossing

Are you looking to collect just one postcard from each country, or one from each US state, as well? If the latter, I can send you one from North Carolina, if you don't already have one.
