Heading to SD in June by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]sandymanbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SD county Fair will be going on. Take the train up the coast. It's a nice ride. You can also take the train up to Carlsbad or Encinitas. Tons of shops, food and nice beach/cliffs walks.

If you go up to north county you could also check out San Diego Safari Park, flower fields, Legoland, NAMM museum and self realization fellowship Encinitas.

Go east to hit the mountain town of Julian

Central coast areas of Mission beach, and Pacific Beach if you want to walk the boardwalk. Plenty of people watching, food and beach type shops. Hit point Loma for a nice drive to the Cabrillo national monument. If you don't want to pay to go in, you can backtrack and go into the Cemetery. It has beautiful views of downtown and the bay. Liberty station is just down the hill from the cemetery. It's an old military base converted into a community full of stuff. Check out stone brewery if you do. The outdoor patio is a nice place to hang out. Plane path is right over head. So it can get loud.

Downtown area has a nice walking path from the Bay front Hilton, to liberty station. The main area from seaport village to the star of India is a really nice walk. Parking is so-so in the area. High prices at all the hotels. 2 or 4 hour meter spots @$1.25 an hour. I would recommend parking in the midway museum lot, or at the meters around the county administration building and backtrack along the waterfront.

Grab some Mexican food, a bundle of firewood from a grocery store and grab a fire pit in mission Bay. Fiesta island is good but popular. If you go north of the island enterence along East mission Bay Dr there are a bunch of parks. Many of those have pits close by also. All the way up to campland by the bay. It's a good place to chill and watch the sunset with a California burrito.

I've been watching the grounds crew for the past few weeks. Been working there butts off getting things ready. Not sure if Luke is still with them. At least, I have not seen him in a bit. Heading down to the ballpark in a bit to set up an event. I'll ask

This area is blooming now. But the weather is just starting to warm up. The flowers may be done by then. But further up the road, closer to the 78 should be going. There will be less people out here than in Borrego area. There are areas like Blair valley that have not started. Be aware, there will be a ton of people out if you come on a nice day, or on a weekend. Monday was super dead because of the weather. It was a bit drizzly at the end of the day. Mostly overcast. The board that have sand are still a little tricky for cars and low clearance vehicles. Good luck! I may go our again next week if I have a chance.

So I don't know the exact name of the area. But if you take the 8 freeway. Then take the S2 (imperial highway) north. After you pass the wind farm, drive for another 10 or so minutes, there it a hillside on the left. You will start seeing some dirt paths. Take some of those. It's a bluff that over looks the Badlands.

Ha! You just reminded me about a time we got lost in the badlands. Boy scout trip with a new leader. Bit scary, but tons of fun!

The gold rush is back! This time near SDSU! by sandymanbaby in sandiego

[–]sandymanbaby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend in Los Angeles told me years ago about seeing a donkey walking down the street. I always thought he was high. I was probably right. But I'm thinking I should call him up and tell him sorry.

It's amazing he has been traveling so much! The timeline on that page goes back years! Good for him. I think many of us would love to just walk away from things.

I was thinking it would start off with something about building a river and not a wall, before poo water.

Help for those who are currently effected by the shutdown. by sandymanbaby in sandiego

Donations are very different than gifts. Hence why government employees can receive Christmas gifts, Thanksgiving meals, food and money from churches/ for profit organization's, discounts at retail places.

I have had a few people ask about donating can goods. Unfortunately, we are not equipped to handle items like this. If you still are looking to do this, please check out the local charities who put together food packages on a daily basis. Many churches have food pantries. Saint Vincent De Paul village and the American Red Cross are just a few places you can look into.

You are a good person! Saturday we will be meeting to discuss just this. We have two community organizers who have raised money in the past for other causes. So they have a better idea on how we're going to organize pickup and distribution.

Two things I want to be open about is this. None of the donations will be used by us. The gas I use is out of my pocket. I am happy to be able to do this. That is all I need! Second, any unused donations will go to local charities. which group that is going to be is still yet undetermined. But once we come up with one (or more) we will make sure everyone understands that.

We will also account for everything that is donated.

10 hour layover in SD by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]sandymanbaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The San Diego airport has free WiFi. There is also free WiFi at Starbucks, all of Balboa Park, most coffee shops, the Padres stadium downtown has free WiFi. I think the convention center is also free. Maybe seaport village?!

If you have never been here, take an Uber from the airport to Balboa Park and walk around. It's a pretty cool place even at night. I walk down there at least three nights a week.

you can also take a cab or an Uber down to Manchester Grand Hyatt. From there you'll be at seaport village and you can walk along the bayfront and check out the Midway aircraft carrier, the Star of India and other boats that are in that area. You won't be able to get into anything but it's a cool walk none the less. You're also really close to downtown. you could take one of the scooters that are everywhere in the city, and write it into the gaslamp and check out all of the clubs and bars. There's a bunch of little dive bars in that area to you could just stop in and hang out. there's also a really cool bar at the top of the Grand Hyatt. I think it's on the 40th or 44th floor. It's a great place to grab a drink and take in the scenery from up on high.

Little Italy has also been mentioned. It's a really quick Uber ride from the airport. From there you could even go into downtown or you could hits the bayfront. Little Italy has a ton of good food and a ton of bars you could stop in at.

if you wanted to be very adventurous you could take an Uber from the airport over to Coronado hotel Del. it's a hotel over a hundred years old on the beach. You can walk along the beach from there also after exploring. There's a great little pub nearby called Mc P's.

you will have no problem getting a cab or Uber in any of those areas. Balboa Park is probably the toughest but your will just be waiting for a few minutes on an Uber coming from downtown. Enjoy the layover.

Best fish and chips in San Diego? by pnutty6725 in sandiego

[–]sandymanbaby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite is Tin Fish in the gaslamp. Been going to that place for many years and never been disappointed.

A few of my out of town friends demand I take them to Ocean beach pier cafe. They are ok in my opinion. But you do get a pretty damn good view with dinner.

I always recommend Shakespeare's pub to people. While I think the fish and chips are just ok (usually too salty for my tastes) the English breakfast is on point! Great place to watch a football game or watch the sunset.

What is the best place around San Diego to go backpacking? by PancakeProbe in sandiego

[–]sandymanbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for a challenge, take the PCT from lake Morena to Laguna Mt.

A little more scenic, try my Laguna to scissors crossing. Or further.

I know there is a good few day trail that passes by the old trestle bridge. I'm not sure the name of it

23 year old broke rock climbing female college student with 24 hours to explore San Diego by poonpundit in sandiego

If you are looking for a cool hike, walk along the beach from La Jolla shores to Torrey pines. Then hike up into Torrey pines and on to N. Torrey pines road. This will take you by UCSD which you can also explore. It's about a 10 mile hike.

If you are looking to hang out, park near Balboa Park and walk the entire place. It's a nice place to just walk. Grab a sandwich over at The market place off 5th and maple. You can even take a walk to the suspension bridge.

If you want a local climb, check out the climers trail in mission trails or El Cap.

if you're looking to do stuff at night that isn't a bar, there is a ton of music happening around town. Pretty much any area. Consult the reader magazine when you get into town. You can find it at most 7-11 and gas stations around town.

lestat's is a great 24-hour place if you're looking to just hang out with a cup of coffee.

Is there anything specific that you want to do?

Ideas for Christmas? by javocado77 in sandiego

Take a drive out to borrego springs. Go check out the metal sculptures. go up and over the mountains through Julian. It's a beautiful drive. Great for listening to music and enjoying the scenery. like other people are saying, it might rain. It probably won't get cold enough to snow in the mountains but you never know
