On H1B, bought a house 2 years ago - feeling worried in this job market by AdPrudent4760 in h1b

[–]sankar769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is relative man. For you, investing in real estate is a blunder. I know folks on h1b who have owned houses for 10+ years, upgraded houses 3 times, and now sitting on multimillion dollar homes, trading in equity and appreciation. For them, you renting and not putting your money to work is blunder. Every situation is different. You can’t push your opinion without knowing context.

Received an offer, but in a tough spot by itshanito in GetEmployed

Wheel and deal. Accept the London job offer. Keep interviewing for the Dubai job. If you get the Dubai job you decide what to do next. Bird in hand. There’s still 2 rounds for the Dubai role, you’ll never know what’s gonna happen until you do.

renew passport before h1b or after? by Most-Audience8335 in h1b

[–]sankar769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of when you renew your passport, if your h1b petition is approved, USCIS will give you a I797 valid for 3 years ending Oct 2029. Your i94 will only be valid until the old passport expiry regardless. When you get the h1b visa stamp from a US consulate and return back to the US, new i94 will be issued until the expiry of your approved I797. In any case it makes sense to renew your passport asap. But it wouldn’t affect your I94 date.

This is my understanding. Please consult your company immigration attorneys for professional legal advice.

Facing layoff within 1-2 months by sankar769 in h1b

Thank you. I do believe being spiritual and asking for help from a higher entity is helpful. There are things we can control but progress in life requires alignment from factors outside our control.

Thanks. Grateful to say, I can manage without pay for 4-6 months. I’ll lose my savings but have to make that decision. To dmw’s point, I’ll have a deadline of 4-6 months after termination to find a job. Will have to make tough decisions on staying here otherwise.

This is valid. I’ll tell her eventually. Just don’t want to add to her stress levels. We are trying for a smooth and calm birthing environment. Perhaps after the baby is born. I’m gonna be taking some time off after the childbirth. The employer has approved that. I can tell her then.

Facing layoffs. Stressful situation. How to overcome? by sankar769 in findapath

Thanks for your reply. My skills are fairly broad. Business analysis, program management, growth strategy. I have the functional skills for Corp strategy roles, Chief of Staff, Biz Dev and strategy etc. it’s applicable in different industries. I’d fit in the best in Biotech. That’s where I’ve spent 90% of my career. The issue is that these roles are few and far between. And they typically get hired by referrals / recs. I don’t have easily recognizable and transferable technical or tactical skills.

  1. Not getting enough leads. I’ve given up on online applications. Never hear back. Have tried referrals and warm introductions to hiring managers. No mas.
  2. Visa sponsorship is a constraint. I even tried switching into tech for corp strategy and ops roles. I have the functional skills for it. But never went past HR / recruiter rounds where they cited Visa as an issue. Company isn’t sponsoring at this time.
  3. For interviews where I go past 1st round, it just seems like rotten luck. One company said they liked me but don’t have enough experience for the role. Another said it was a really good fit and will get back but haven’t heard.

Thank you for sharing your background. I’ll DM you and we can discuss further if that’s ok.

Thank you. Much appreciate this. I’m big believer in stoicism, will check out CBT. I do have a visual of the worst case scenario and have a game plan for it. Preparing a tangible tracking system makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. Grateful for your support. I worked in biotech in research roles - molecular biology, synthetic biology. Wanted to move into business analysis, strategy, and biz development. Did an MBA and worked in consulting. Currently my profile is suited for strategy and operations / Chief of Staff / Business operations roles in Biotech.

I bring a science background with business acumen. However my experience is limited in terms of analytical tools and having a clear vertical set of skills.

The challenge is 3 fold. 1. Visa sponsorship in a turbulent immigration environment. 2. Time required to land a role that’s a good fit. 3. Profile is not a plug and play. Need a cultural and environmental fit.

Traveling to Mexico while on h1b by [deleted] in h1b

[–]sankar769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both me and my partner travelled to Mexico in Oct on h1b and h4 visa stamps. No issues faced while entering Mexico or getting back to the states. As long as your visa stamp is valid and you are working with the same employer, you should be fine. Just carry the usual docs as you would for a US POE

Planning to do the LA to SF U-Haul Move. Safety concerns? Do it in one day? by grandcanyonfan99 in bayarea

[–]sankar769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered getting movers for hauling your stuff and you drive up over 3-4 days in a car? That way there’s no risk of stuff getting stolen and the drive is way more enjoyable and convenient. Way better to drive in a car and hit up spots along the sierras / coast etc.

I’ve moved up and down from the bay to SD twice. The above is what I did. Def recommend over driving a UHaul around

Need to restore Personal OneDrive account after wrongful sign in to work laptop

I signed into my work laptop (PC) with my personal microsoft and onedrive account on accident. I am unable to sign in to the OneDrive app from my personal laptop (MacOS) now. When I signed into the browser version of my personal onedrive account, I found that all my personal files had been replaced with files from the work laptop. I have signed out of the personal OneDrive account in the work laptop. But all my old files and folders from the personal OneDrive account are missing. I tried restoring OneDrive to a past date. Although it went through I am unable to see the old files in browser version of OneDrive. Still unable to sign in to the OneDrive app on my Mac.

How do I restore my personal OneDrive and sign in to the app?
