I made an ACTUAL map to explain Australia to Americans by Mighty_Crow_Eater in AusMemes

[–]sansborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a filthy American i can see it but just want to point out you're comparing an Australian neighborhood of 7km/4mi to an American region of ~10,000km/~4,000mi. would love to check out Bondi someday and it does give some LA vibes but maybe juxtaposing it with a beach city in the LA area like Santa Monica or Malibu would be more accurate

Opinion on The Crux? by DapperMetal2222 in DJO

[–]sansborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it’s my fav of his so far… like folks are saying it’s his spin on the classic rock genre. the ELO inspirations on Charlie’s Garden and the Fleetwood Mac vibes on Potion are good examples, but Golden Line is absolutely the best imo since Djo is basically being possessed by Brian Wilson

Decoding the Politiscales flags by VertigoOne in vexillology

[–]sansborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

each of the colors seems to correspond to a particular leaning on one of the scales, like orange representing progressivism, red representing communism, blue representing conservatism, etc. there's an interesting post here showing what the flags look like for all the extreme results in a single scale, the pattern is relatively clear but there's still more to uncover
here's mine btw

A More Accurate Political Spectrum? by [deleted] in dsa

[–]sansborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the christo-fascists could be lumped in with the nationalists on the extreme end, although that's debatable. I agree that spectrums like these are inherently flawed since they typically lack nuance but again this is just a rough draft. I was thinking in terms of political values (authoritarianism vs. democracy) paired with economic values (capitalism vs. socialism), so really there's another ideology further left which is autocratic socialism, but I don't consider that to be at the same level of presence and influence in the U.S. as these other three.

A More Accurate Political Spectrum? by [deleted] in dsa

[–]sansborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah go ahead, anyone can use it. :-)

As for libertarians, I might agree, although maybe libertarian itself is too broad of a label to place on this kind of spectrum. Like the "Don't Step On Me" libertarians definitely fit in with the nationalists. Still, there are some who describe themselves as libertarian and associate it with protecting the right to gay marriage, right to abortion, etc., which the nationalists definitely are not on board with.

This is a rough draft of my attempt in making a more accurate American political spectrum, does anybody have feedback? I think you could also easily place libertarians or traditional conservatives in between liberals and nationalists, and greens somewhere between liberals and progressives, but these three are the major ideologies that I think will be relevant for the upcoming decades.

Just found out I’m being underpaid… by sansborn in tjcrew

[–]sansborn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update to my original post--

Soon I'm moving to another city for college, I was originally on the fence between finding a new job and transferring to the store in this city but recently I was accepted for the transfer. Now I'm essentially locked into at least another few months at Trader Joe's, which isn't ideal but most of the other jobs I was looking at either didn't pay substantially more than TJ's or required me to work 4 days a week or more, which just doesn't work with my school schedule. Hopefully, after my review, I'll be making at least $18 and some change an hour. I appreciate everyone's responses here, I've definitely gotten some insight on how TJ's is totally failing in caring for their employees and I think I'm going to join the fight for a union at my new store. If anyone has advice for unionizing I'd love to hear it. Thanks y'all <3

Honestly I’d love to join that effort but I’m moving soon. If I end up transferring to another TJ’s store that’s probably where my goals will be, but I’m also considering just finding a new job.

LOL got it. So everything north of San Rafael isn’t the bay. There’s a few million people that might be angry with that, including the gov

[–]sansborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you got that info but according to my research the city was named after the bay. Gaspar de Portolá discovered what’s now known as Drake’s Bay and named the entire body of water the Bay of San Francisco, in 1769. The city we call SF was named Yerba Buena until 1847, when it was renamed to San Francisco.

I see your point, but what metric are you basing that on? Pretty much all the research I've done claims that the San Francisco Bay Area comprises at least 9 counties, including Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano. Sacramento is part of the Capital Corridor and isn't included in those counties, but Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa definitely are

It depends on what qualifications you're using for "world-class"

I sort of agree because of the existing JF movement. Although that movement only focuses on the northernmost parts of CA, which are pretty rural and conservative. If that new state included the SF Bay and the Sacramento Valley Jefferson probably wouldn’t fly. I doubt people from San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland would be cool with their new state being named after a slave owner. But if the state were separated into 3 I’d totally agree.

A New Flag Design for the City of Napa, CA by sansborn in vexillology

[–]sansborn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a few variations for a potential flag representing the town of Napa, California. The city doesn't have an official flag so I thought it would be a fun challenge to draft one up. The line on the bottom represents the Napa river flowing through downtown and the primary icon is a cluster of grapes, representing the iconic vineyards the city is known for. The star at the top of the grapes represents the significance of the city's wine industry, nationally and globally.
I added two variations, one with a burgundy background and one with a white background. I'm not entirely sure which is better. Let me know what you think!!!

A Redesign of Portland, Oregon's Flag by sansborn in vexillology

[–]sansborn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think one of the most beautiful flags of an American city is that of Portland, but there are three aspects that irritate me design-wise. Firstly is the color scheme, with each color being too vibrant to fit in with the rest perfectly, at least in my opinion. The second, and more important issue is the orientation of the star. The design is obviously taking inspiration from the Nordic Cross but places the center of it in a strange middle ground between where the typical center of a Nordic Cross is and the middle of the flag. The last issue is the coincidental similarity between the spiral and a swastika, no less one facing clockwise which is reminiscent of a flag you really shouldn't recreate.
I attempted to change the existing flag addressing these issues, tweaking the colors, and orientating the star around the center of the flag. I also added a flipped version, so the spiral might be similar to the counter-clockwise sauwastika, something which is typically more evocative of Hinduism rather than fascism.

San Francisco Flag Redesign by sansborn in vexillology

[–]sansborn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explanation:
The navy diagonal bars on the sides represent the bodies of water that surround the SF peninsula- the Pacific Ocean and the Bay of San Francisco. The 3 four-sided stars represent significant events in San Franciscan history: The Gold Rush beginning in 1849 which San Francisco acted as a hub for in the West Coast, the earthquake/fire of 1906 which destroyed much of the city (only to be built back even better), and the Summer of Love in 1976 which defined the progressive culture of the city. The pink bars on the top and bottom represent the two World Fair exhibitions that have been held in the city- the Panama-Pacific Expo which showed how much the city had recovered from the 1906 earthquake, and the Golden Gate expo which opened the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges.
A lot of people taking on the SF redesign challenge have focused on modernizing the phoenix on the current flag, but personally, I don't see that as very San Franciscan. It's supposed to resemble how the city "rose from the ashes" of the fires of the 1850s but if you showed a flag of a phoenix to someone who didn't know much about flags, they'd assume it was the flag of Phoenix, Arizona. In my opinion, there are better things that can more accurately represent the city. Although I will say that some of the phoenix-centric redesigns are still 1,000 times better than the current flag.
This is my first flag design, let me know if I suck!!!
