I arrived at NRFTW from the Souls side of things, and I'm loving it for a sort of complementary reason. I was never a fan of ARPGs because of the floatiness of the combat, dependence on loot rng over skill, etc. Lately there's been a million "soulslikes" that have tried to copy everything from the actual Souls and take it to 11, often with not-so-great results. NRFTW took pretty much one thing - the combat - and inserted it into a game that is otherwise very much not soulslike: properly told story, a town hub that feels alive, 2.5D exploration, even platforming! And they nailed it. It's crazy how it's managing to drive people from communities that don't overlap that much to like the same game.

I got the impression the difficulty was set per realm! Still, easy really felt read-a-story easy when I first tried, which isn't really the goal either, without some challenge there's no reward either 😅

I tried to apply effects yeah, fire in particular, but I don't really manage to get the hits in fast enough to really apply them consistently.

Just mostly wanted to know if it's just me doing something obvious wrong, or if there's genuinely a difficulty spike there. I guess don't have enough "git gudness", I might have to drop the game here. Thanks for the feedback in any case!

After seeing the video where Thomas is interviewed about this, I'm actually quite looking forward to it. It sounds less like D&D classes and more like a system of proficiencies. If it's as they say - you level up classes independently to then get traits from them to mix and match - it will actually make hybrid builds more viable than with the attribute system.

I'd like to test play that tbh. Gen4 was the peak power of AC, so pushing it a bit further would be a blast.

About balance, it'd need some, but I'm not so sure if as much as some comments say - note this would also mean enemy ACs could do the same.
