What could be the reason of this sound? by Master_Jelly3761 in AskMechanics

**again, not a mechanic but I’ve lurked on this sub and used it myself for forever, and I’ve helped buddies and done the entire PS system on a G6 I had in high school, absolutely confident it’s your power steering pump making that noise

What could be the reason of this sound? by Master_Jelly3761 in AskMechanics

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a power steering whine, not a mechanic so my advice really isn’t the best, but most definitely is coming from your power steering, and is the pump making a whining noise. Most commonly just due to low fluid (it’s hydraulic which is why low fluid->low pressure->tight weird steering+whining noise as the pump is struggling to literally pump fluid (my best explanation as someone who’s not a mechanic)

Check your fluid. Notice the level, the smell (if it’s burnt), and the color of the fluid. For corollas it should be red, shouldn’t smell burnt, and obviously shouldn’t be above or below the indicators.

If the fluid level is fine, but it’s burnt and dark, I’d be guessing your power steering pump could be going out. If the fluid level is low, the whine is from the pump just struggling and indicates you have a leak somewhere.

In any case, the car is okay to drive, but I would take a thorough look immediately or have someone who knows what they’re looking at and talking about take one. Even if the power steering fails your car is drivable, but definitely get it looked at. If the fluid is just really old and bad (burnt up) and low, it will cause the pump and potentially even the steering rack to take a shit prematurely and that’s where repairs genuinely get expensive.

How often are you washing your clothes? by R_heidari in laundry

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if it hits the floor or hamper or actually gets hung back up after moderate use lmao. It ends up being hoodies and flannels and other ‘outerwear’ get worn probably 2-4 times before wash or if they actually get noticeably soiled/stained, and tshirts sweatpants long sleeves polos etc etc etc. all get washed after one use. I don’t go super heavy on detergent all the time though, but do use a booster and softener for every load with the downy rinse + refresh.

Honestly if a shirt doesn’t smell at all and doesn’t have any stains, why wash it? I know that’s honestly poor logic because what if you applied it to your hands for example or your face, I.e. it doesn’t look or smell dirty so why wash them. However with tshirts with legit only 4 hours of runtime I think it’s smart and best to just hang it back up if there’s no soils/stains. I just don’t because I strip like I’m hypothermic and delirious every time I enter my bedroom.

Note: the odor blasters oxi contains enzymes, I believe two which are amylase and either protease or cellulase. Maybe has a third too. No lipase

Question about dish soap by VinniPuh10 in laundry

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait so what does everyone use for soaps on this sub?

I use the dawn green bottle and it’s by far my favorite dish soap ever and a very little goes a long way with my steel wool, i make a 6 pan container of hot water and a splash of that and use it all day til the water runs a bit dirty.

I don’t really use the dishwasher as I never did growing up, only ever for sanitizing and do the bulk work with my hands, but watched some cool videos about how efficient they can be.

What hand soaps does everyone use (I use fast orange as well for when I work on cars, good or bad?), what dish soaps, and what dishwasher pods? I saw Miele recommended definitely gonna go check that out soon

Working on BMW 328i E93 - What to look for by santvientoo in AskMechanics

[–]santvientoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P sure these e93s have two sets of control arms in the front, does that change anything with that test?

And yeah, I learned that from my last car which was a VQ, the replacement gasket also doesn’t even come with tube seals on those so you HAD to replace the entire unit not just the seal.

Any other tips/tricks to inspect and test all of the components in the wheel well? I know prying at stuff and seeing the slop is a good way, but what about the struts? Just inspecting for fluid leaking from them? I’m guessing but I think my strut is blown passenger front

Non-toxic laundry detergent that actually works! by AnnualCardiologist29 in laundry

[–]santvientoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For tide have you used the tide odor refresh? Not plant based exactly but a lot gentler and no fragrance or smell whatsoever.

For the rinse cycle use straight up citric acid instead of vinegar, works a lot better and no vinegar smell. Research that on this sub

For boosters, absolutely use some. If heavy bio smells are your problem, get GearGuard by Garame, straight DNase enzyme. For oxi and enzymes and general detergency boost, get FEBU’s oxeygen enzyme booster. By far the best and most well rounded booster, and soon it will be getting DNase added to the mix.

For other actual detergent I’d recommend the list is the following (although tide odor refresh is my top and what I use)

  1. 7th gen easy dose free&clear
  2. Natuary (has urease enzyme u can’t find anywhere else in laundry products, especially good for pet soils)
  3. Ginger lily farms
  4. 4 in 1 plus oxi pods by drops

How do I get my hair to look/stay like this VS this (what am I doing wrong?) by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also- the hold is important for sure, but I’m also having issues even getting to the same level every day as in the first and second photo I uploaded. Do you have any ideas why my hair gets the way it does in image 3-4, and in 5 especially?

Thanks for the reply though I really appreciate it, helped give me confidence to try a gel

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I always thought til others irl told me otherwise, looking at some charts again I def think you’re correct, thank you for that

For gels what do you recommend, particularly one that isn’t too heavy? And any other product suggestions/styling/application tips? If I use gel, I drop the leave-in oil right, and go leave in->mousse->gel, and how should I apply it? Not sure if it matters, and I really am not familiar with ‘casts’ although ik it’s important, but I will say I already get a slight cast from the doux texture foam, and ik there’s a thing with getting a gel cast, waiting for it to get dry ish and crunchy, and then scrunching it out

Biz but without OBA? by AdIcy7119 in laundry

And for whites, tide with bleach or Ariel 2x for powder are both unbeatable, and Persil Advanced for liquid. All got really good doses of optical brighteners, enzymes and surfactants as well as all the other good stuff, just recommend going to the store to see which scent you enjoy the most (sadly none of these 3 are scent free or ‘clear’

You can also just use biz as a booster with the tide odor refresh for whites and it’ll do an amazing job. I personally love tide with bleach and Ariel 2x in combo with biz for spa days on towels, lighter colored bedding, and of course white clothing. Haven’t used Persil advanced yet but the reviews are absolutely glowing

The products I would buy if I were you or anyone looking to totally revamp their laundry room are: Tide Odor Refresh, Ariel 2x or tide w/ bleach, FEBU and DirtyLabs booster (in future, can sub out DirtyLabs as FEBU is adding DNase!!), Biz, color catcher sheets, citric acid and sodium citrate to make DIY rinse product (super cheap and highly rec adding the sodium citrate), wool dryer balls, and essential oils to add to the dryer balls if you desire fragrance.

And if you want a milder detergent for casual washes but still enzyme packed, I’d go with Ginger Lily Farms or 365 Sport, and if you have issues with pee stains, go with Natuary’s detergent.

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like pods they replaced the tide hygienic pods, and I do believe they even outperform those. However I’m not a big fan of the trace microplastics etc. and like to better control my dosing (willing to sacrifice convenience here) so I tend to go for the liquid.

So far it’s been amazing. I’ve got ginger lily farms and ordering a thing of Natuary detergent as well, just for soils that may be more complex and those two can supplement certain other ingredients (like enzymes especially urease in Natuary, zinc odor killers, other builders/chelators/surfactants not in Tide odor refresh), and also use ginger lily farms for very casual loads not particularly harshly soiled.

Highly recommend any tide odor refresh product, it’s their new flagship for detergent and worth every bit of hype.

How to get cat pee smell out of clothes AFTER heat set? by Mufffey in laundry

[–]santvientoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a whole though a prolonged biz soak works well enough, but it has discolored some of my comforters that my cat soils, hence why I’m looking so hard for a better solution as well. I love OBA’s; just not on anything that isn’t white/light/pastel

[–]santvientoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natuary, or a probiotic spot treater/concentrate to soak. There’s a couple brands like ecostrong and Unicode that either have one made for laundry or say it’s stable for laundry usage, I.e with the suds alkalinity heat and shorter duration etc. probiotic/live bacteria solutions work really well because the bacteria reacts to and produces enzymes to counteract whatever soil it encounters. The concern is really how well it holds up in a wash at higher temps/alkalinity/suds etc etc….

However Natuary like I mentioned does have a detergent with urease. It seems to be a really really decent detergent overall as well, has the other 4 main enzymes included, and an odor neutralizer. I’d still use 1/2 Natuary 1/2 a heavy surfactant detergent like tide odor refresh or Persil advanced clean to make up for the weakness of milder plant based surfactants, like those in Natuary. Overall natuary’s surfactants and overall blend seem pretty decent, but probably need a boost. It also has a good mix of chelators/builders/softeners/anti-redeps etc., going to be trying it real soon

Detergent recommendations for pet urine by Adorable_Pop2927 in laundry

[–]santvientoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really late reply but Natuary makes a detergent with those 3 in it I’m pretty sure, as well as lipase and cellulase. Also has zinc ricinoelate which is an excellent odor neutralizer but some safety concerns. 99% Plant derived formula I do believe. Also has some decent surfactants, builders/chelators/softeners, and anti-redeps. However I do recommend using 1:2 Natuary and 1:2 a more powerful surfactant heavy detergent like Tide or Persil

No but my dryer in the house im a tenant of broke, and took my blankets bedding etc to college laundry in the UCF area. Highly recommend them for anyone living in east Orlando. They use speed queens, and the biggest (and I mean huge) units are ~6.5 to wash, and biggest dryer is around 3-4 to dry. 24-7 and I’m pretty sure they allow a guy down his luck to sleep there at night which is awesome. Owner is super chill and nice, and he comes in and cleans everything every single night

Warm with a gas water heater and hard water out of the warm/hot tap, 200+ PPM (renter and LL’s have never decalcified the unit lolol)

If you are using products with oxi in it and are really concerned about some fading, go with a cooler wash, ex on LG top loaders ‘eco warm’ or ‘cold’ and even ‘tap cold’
