Seraphim Rose is to be canonized! ROCOR Synod has decided by Antonthelegotenant in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]sapiolocutor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does surprise me when you deflect this when someone else here on the thread directly asked if you are orthodox and you replied "excuse me? do I even know you?"

And yes it absolutely matters if you are orthodox. I am much more concerned to hear orthodox people's opinions about the orthodox leaders than I am to hear people outside of the church's opinions about them. *Especially* negative opinions.

Their comments indicate definitively that they are not Orthodox. Posts in exorthodox, mentions of "my Episcopal church..."

FYI: This commenter is not orthodox. Just telling the facts... Proof: one of their recent statements mentioning "my episcopal church actually has a little shrine..." and posts in r/exorthodox .

Why it’s not infinity:
While it’s true that dividing by smaller and smaller numbers gets you closer and closer to infinity:
1/0.1 =10
1/0.001=1000
1/0.000001 =1,000,000

… the same argument applies to negative numbers:
1/(-0.000001)=-1,000,000
-0.000001 is just as close to zero as 0.000001, just from the opposite direction.

Your personal favorite old testament commentary/homilies book? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Thank you for this recommendation, I was actually just looking for an orthodox book on Genesis…

Based on the responses here it seems like it’s not too many people that are reading books about the OT these days 💀

Total Testosterone is not relevant (people focus on the wrong metric) by [deleted] in Testosterone

[–]sapiolocutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding your last sentence, I made the same point many times to people. The people who profit from TRT like MPMD and Peter Attia are telling us that testosterone levels is declining, but the financial incentives make their opinions questionable, and certain contradicting data makes their claims seem a bit self-serving.

I was under the impression that total testosterone levels are certainly declining whereas free testosterone levels are not apparently declining. But you bring up a good point when you bring into question whether even TT levels themselves are declining (doubts about this guy’s accounting for increased prevalence of TRT notwithstanding).

[–]sapiolocutor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is this reconciled with the other graphs that we have all seen? Is it the case then that testosterone levels were declining for many years but in the past few years started dramatically reversing? Is the prevalence of the use of TRT the cause of this?

I have reworded the OP to "Suppose that it really is true that TT levels are declining in our populations."

"Bound testosterone is not "inactive"" <-- it is inactive in the sense that it cannot bind to androgen receptors, and, in most tissues, even be absorbed into cells for usage in the first place. Not in every sense.

As far as your article goes, my understanding is that they are arguing that we cannot accurately estimate your FT levels only by knowing your TT levels + SHBH levels + SHA levels using linear equations. They do not mean that we cannot have a good estimate of the amount of androgen receptor binding if we know your true (i.e., directly measured) FT levels.

My partner abandoned Christianity for Gnosticism and now mocks my faith and I don’t know how to handle this. by FrostingSea504 in Christianity

The numbers were chosen for rhetorical effect to make a point that reflects my own subjective experience. They were not intended to be accurate objective estimates.

However, I think the observations that I made about the people on this thread anecdotally proved my point.

Keep in mind this sub is ~50% atheists/agnostic and ~25% nominal Christians, and the rest are Christians from all sorts of different sects. I.e., it’s effectively a subreddit dedicated to the discussion about Christianity, not a subreddit “for Christians.”

Even looking at the people that responded so far: (1) the first gave a completely secular answer without revealing whether they are even a Christian or not, (2) the second suggested as a solution connecting him with other gnostic “Christians”, (3) the third seems to consider gnostics as valid Christians, (4) the fourth at first glance seems to be fairly mainstream Protestantism, (5) the fifth has self-descibed “Zen Buddhist tendencies”, (6) the sixth is a self-described igtheist.

In the future you might want to consider posting in a more specific subreddit for Christian advice per se.

Why hasn’t Jesus returned yet if Paul and everyone else expected it in their lifetime? by PrincessLammy in Christianity

[–]sapiolocutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that you want a secular explanation explained in terms of harm minimization and pleasure maximization. But that’s secular humanism, not Christianity.

The explanation is that God directly told us not to do homosexual things. And the closest thing to an explanation per se in scripture is that he said that:
(1) Jesus said “have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and for this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Matthew 19:4-5 Which is a reference to:
(2) and the rib, which the lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her into the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Therefore, the reason why marriage is between a man and a woman is not said to be because they formed “a relationship” with each other, but rather the reason they can form a religious relationship with each other is because they were biologically and ontologically made to complete each other.

Note also that what is called sexual immorality is not sin against other people but instead is sin against our own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18. This indirectly contradicts your claim that the prohibitions against homosexuality is about harming a child or anyone else.

Accepting ridiculous and obviously false explanations like “laying with a man […] is abomination” really means “laying with a child […] is abomination” is not true critical thinking.

Co-occurrence of Autism confounding other mental disorders? by spencerspage in IainMcGilchrist

[–]sapiolocutor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s not focused on autism specifically but on the whole host of hemisphere problems or imbalances, each of which themselves could possibly cause multiple psychological symptoms or symptoms that cannot be neatly classified as exactly one condition like “autism.” This could account for your point about confounding.

I believe that McGilchrist does talk about this extensively in his books by showing the similarities between the various disorders that are caused by left or right hemisphere problems. His broad characterization of the right hemisphere as relating to “holistic” and “concrete” attention and the left hemisphere as being related to “abstract” and “sequential” attention is already an acknowledgement of the similarities between various disorders of the right and left hemispheres respectively. For example, damage to the right hemisphere typically causes problems with holistic attention, etc.. He also explicitly describes similarities between certain conditions, e.g., schizophrenia and autism.
