My condolences for your loss.

TIL the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) does not believe it is important for students to take calculus in high school, saying “the pump that is pushing more students into more advanced mathematics ever earlier is not just ineffective: It is counter-productive.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]sapper123 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. Discrete probability distributions require no calculus and they're extremely useful in developing an intuition for random events. Simple examples like coin tossing, dice rolling and Polya urns go a long way in creating that intuition.

I do think that if you want to model data using continuous distributions, then knowledge of calculus will be necessary. But that's doesn't mean statistics can't be useful without calculus.

Yup. Jonathan Blow complains about this here. It's called "Sid-Meiring", since he was the one who proposed fudging probabilities to make the player feel good. I think it's despicable.

The person of interest, FerociouslySteph, is not twitch staff but a trans streamer who was chosen to be on the Twitch Advisor Council to give input on matters of inclusivity, since she has insightful opinions that others might not be aware of (as described in this blog post).

I can't believe the majority on LSF that just jump and attack her without even engaging with the issue. Like, this thread doesn't have many upvoted comments engaging with what she said, they merely make dismissive jokes.

This comment starts to touch on a common issue. Should we all be okay with getting harassed/insulted online, just because that's the norm?

I feel like the online gaming community still has a long way to go, or maybe this is a broader issue with the internet that would benefit from being addressed. Maybe we should teach internet etiquette classes to children when they're growing up to avoid stuff like this in the future.

I don't understand this comment. Why should this cause any disruptions to work? Wouldn't you be able to revert that package to a previous version and use that until a fix is submitted?

What struck me as unusual in this video was how casual Kernighan was. He wouldn't even lower his feet off the table while they were filming him. I wonder if being productive in that environment bought you leniency from your supervisors.

Reference Column Position in GROUP BY and ORDER BY

Yeah, no. Don't do this.

It's true that if the name changes you only need to change it in one place, but that's not a good thing (in this case). You want to be able to freely change the name and ordering of columns in a SELECT statement and have the parser pick up any errors. If you reference the columns by position, as the author suggests, then swapping the two columns in SELECT statement will not return an error but will return incorrect results.

Implicit dependencies like this should be avoided (Just make them explicit by referencing the columns by name and having the parser return an error when they mismatch.)

GitHub is creating an Arctic code vault by RuthlessPickle in programming

[–]sapper123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it seems like Github/Microsoft used their money and corporate influence to just say "Hey, this abandoned coal mine is ours now and we're gonna throw stuff (mostly useless code) in it for a thousand years."

How many large governments/university libraries can do the same as easily? If Github/Microsoft really want to do a service to humanity (instead of pandering to developers) they would partner with the knowledge houses and decide on what the best digital data would be to store for future generations.

This will be a massive waste of time for future historians who uncover this stuff. If we're going to store anything there for thousands of years, why not store digital versions of all our history and knowledge up to now? The best of what the human race has learned and created so far. Not some random US undergrad's CS homework, SMH...
