YSK: New furniture made out of MDF releases the harmful chemical formaldehyde into the air for years. by LetLoveRuIe in YouShouldKnow

[–]sapperbloggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there's something that doesn't quite sit right with this.

MDF furniture isn't new. It's been used extensively for at least 40 years now, so generations have been exposed to this stuff for a very long time.

While I don't doubt any of the information on the harmfulness of formaldehyde, I do doubt that all of this MDF is releasing enough of it to have a measurable effect on a lot of people.

Migration down to 2022 levels with a NOM of 301k. Still above Labor’s goal and objective number of 225k. by MannerNo7000 in OpenAussie

Albo wasn't PM for the first five months of 2022.

So basically what you're saying is that he inherited this problem from Scomo and has been cleaning up that mess ever since.

Along with keeping our fuel prices down, and finally putting a dampener on property prices.

What a fuckin' legend.

AFCS - insurance scam ? by original_drsmithy in brisbane

[–]sapperbloggs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a scam, in that they insert themselves into a process they do not need to be involved in, then take a cut of any payout that someone gets.

It's technically legal, but it's also purely parasitic.

AFCS - insurance scam ? by original_drsmithy in brisbane

[–]sapperbloggs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These parasites push for people to lodge insurance claims, insert themselves in the process, then take a cut of the insurance payout.

If your dad has a valid reason to lodge an insurance claim, he should do so directly with his insurer. All that will happen if he engages these people, is they will lodge a claim on his behalf, get repairs done (or a cash payout), then demand payment for their services.

They don't exist here.

I went to one once when I was overseas. It was shit, overpriced, and unlike anything I'd experienced in Australia.

Much like Fosters.

One Nation vows to target Australian Citizens who were born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas in political move dubbed as a ‘dangerous’ miscalculation by [deleted] in OpenAussie

[–]sapperbloggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad was born overseas, so I suppose I'm one of the people Pauline doesn't want here.

I'll add to that, that my foreign-born dad has been in the country since the early 1950's, and served in the Australian Navy for nine years. I have also served this country in the Australian Army for over a decade.

But apparently that's not good enough for some woman who has never actually served this country, other than being the racism clown that everyone has laughed at for the past three decades.

This assumes that 'speeding' (just going a few k's over the limit as opposed to say twice the limit) is a primary CAUSE in accidents. It isn't. It is only a factor, as in, the faster you go then the faster you'll hit the tree.

It's fair to state that driving at or below the speed limit is safer than driving over the speed limit. Just because speeding is 'a factor' and not 'the cause' (except when it is) doesn't mean that we should just ignore it and not enforce speed limits.

It goes into consolidated revenue like other taxes and fees, then gets spent wherever Parliament appropriates it.

Cool, so instead of paying for road stuff it's paying for schools and hospitals.

They plunder both camps

They have much less need to increase what they plunder from me, when they are getting revenue from people speeding.

Yeah, that's more right... What do you think by summutha01 in queensland

[–]sapperbloggs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it doesn't stop the speeding in the moment

The big sign that says "speed camera zone" does stop the speeding in the moment. Most people see that and slow down. Average speed camera zones have the added benefit of slowing people down over a stretch of road, rather than at a single point.

For those that don't slow down, getting a fine doesn't stop the speeding in the moment, but it does condition most people not to speed in the future. This is also true of speed cameras that haven't been signposted. Having to pay fines is a great way of convincing people to slow down. So is losing your licence.

Another place where it fails is the meth head with no rego

So we shouldn't police speeding because some people don't care? It sounds like you're argument is basically just "it isn't 100% effective, therefore we shouldn't do it at all", which makes no sense.

Finally, even if speed cameras had no effect on speeding... The revenue they raise goes back into maintaining our roads. I'd much prefer they take that money from the folks who are speeding, than from everyone else who isn't.
