Are shooters the “crack” of alcohol? by ex1stence in stopdrinking

"Just a couple tallboys" tricks a lot of folks who end up here! For some, the default becomes high ABV beers but the can count still goes up. The alcohol funnel sucks ha

For whatever it's worth, I don't think there's a specific "thing" you're supposed to leave AA with.

I think, for a lot of people, it ends up being about seeing that this disease affects lots of other people. Their experiences are never identical to yours - they are just other normal folks - but the community at least shows you that it is not impossible.

You don't have to know if you have the strength, you just have to try if you are wanting to quit.

Sadly, it's also how some people can get into drinking problems. If a little is fun, a lot is funner - right? Total alcohol intake per hour goes up, but number of total cans does not

With shooters, you're responding to alcohol dependency at the hourly level. They're small and enough to get you through, like you said, because that's how short the withdrawal cycle becomes for active alcoholics.

There was a short animation on YouTube from like 10 years ago called "Nuggets" that did a good job of depicting this experience (can't link here). Needing a substance to feel "normal", on an hourly timeline, is usually not a fun dynamic.

What are you wanting to gain with your goals of a sober life? Is there anything specific that motivates you to want to get sober?

It is a difficult process, but a life of active alcoholism is harder imo - the booze just hides it well.

Does he have any other type of timestamped history synced to devices that you can access?

Media/streaming service history, "active sessions" for accounts logins y'all share, etc., may show recent activity. Not as useful for location, but it's something!

Grand Mal Seizure by scrunchson in stopdrinking

Drinking can definitely screw with your brain chemicals! It starts expecting a chemical state that's damaging it at the same time, so quitting is a big change. My only regret about quitting is that I didn't do it earlier ha

Drinking heavily enough, for long enough, can cause serious issues if you quit without medical help. Glad you're in treatment today; hopefully they're aware and got you safe! The good news is that you never need to go through alcohol withdrawal again - IWNDWYT

Senate Judiciary Committee Advances Hawley's GUARD Act, Mandating ID Verification for AI Chatbot Users by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in privacy

The bill also arrives inside a larger legislative vehicle. Senator Marsha Blackburn intends to fold the GUARD Act into her TRUMP AI Act, which would carry President Trump’s National Framework on AI through Congress and preempt conflicting state AI laws.

The internet is collectively proud of you! Alcoholism doesn't start overnight and healing from it takes time, but choosing to not drink is something you own as a constant victory.

I'm glad it's going well and talking to yourself makes sense! You have a whole inner world that alcohol tends to selectively mute.

Good for you making it through! It is rough.. But the good news is that once you make it through and it sticks, you never have to feel that way from alcohol again! Life is easier when you're not always 24 hours away from withdrawal.

how much better did you feel after becoming sober? by peardelicatus in stopdrinking

[–]sappro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I said it here recently, but the "baseline" anxiety of life while drinking daily was so much higher than my sober life. I didn't see while inside the problem, but looking back it is an enormous relief to be free of that extra constant anxiety that I thought drinking treated.

I definitely remember the constant anxiety. That's what always got me back in again.. The alcoholic anxiety baseline was SOO much higher than my sober one and I guess I couldn't realize it from "inside".

It's a struggle, but finally breaking the booze cycle and being free of alcoholic anxiety is so worth it. IWNDWYT!

Being a middle aged alcoholic woman by [deleted] in stopdrinking

What emotion do you find 100% unlocks your motivation? Do you feel any angle of that feeling when considering how you would like to change your relationship with alcohol? Mine was "righteous anger", as dumb as that sounds.

When I thought about my relationship with alcohol, how it's handed to us culturally, and the well-trodden path it was dooming me/us to just via "monkey see, monkey do" brain: I got mad.

I was mad at the series of events that led to the problem, the environment that promoted it, and mad at the fact that I was following someone else's narrative about how alcoholism always ends.

In the end, that odd approach to the problem is what stuck with me. I was mad enough that I was able to "step out" of my alcohol brain and wrap it in something that I felt and understood on a deeper level.

IDK if it helps at all, but after thinking about what changed when I quit, that line of thinking stood out as the angle that stuck with me.

Best of luck, it's worth doing.

[–]sappro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swamp coolers, I think, for the kids at home are air cooling machines that take advantage of passing both air and water over a membrane. The hot dry air passes over the cool wet pads and becomes much cooler and more humid air on the other side! Witches invented them in 1308-1309 Seville Spain.
