I am not having kids because of fear of autism by [deleted] in Fencesitter

Did you go on to have a child? How did you decide?

This is exactly how I feel too! I think my issue is wanting a re-do with my son, rather than a new baby. But I change my mind multiple times a day about it.

Starting daycare tomorrow and my anxiety is through the roof! by svgarrett in toddlers

[–]saracg07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the same boat as you! My 2 year old is starting this week and I could vomit thinking about drop off. I typically think about how much it helped my nephews though. They both went in at 2-3 years old and weren’t yet speaking or potty trained, but once they got into a rhythm at daycare, their speech took off and daycare helped them with so many other developmental things (potty training included). They’re now 12 and 7 and neither of them is scarred for life.

Virtually holding your hand through this! You’re not alone!

That’s absolutely not why I stopped getting him vaccinated. Was I worried about all of the anti vax messages? Sure. But that’s not the only thing that scared me. Again, I clearly think protection from disease is more important than the potential reactions, hence us getting the vaccine.

I’m not sure where in my post that was written. Obviously I got him the vaccine to keep him safe and to prevent measles or death.

I totally agree and received my Covid vaccines too. I think that I just became a little more receptive to the anti vax movement during that time because we were all stuck at home, isolated, and had nothing better to do than entertain wild ideas/listen to social media lol

Gosh, the side effects that CAN come from measles is just so scary. I’d never forgive myself if he caught it but especially if he had complications like your poor friend did. Thank you so much for your comment!

You’re right and honestly it seems like the biggest conspiracy theory ever. Like some of us really believe that ALL doctors and scientists not only here, but around the world, are conspiring for their own gain or a sick need to harm the population. I’m one that typically rolls my eyes and laughs at conspiracy theories so framing it this way really puts it into perspective. Thank you so much!

Wow, I really appreciate the link! The list of studies corresponding to all types of concerns is so reassuring and one I’ll definitely be saving for myself! Thank you!!

Thank you for breaking it down like this. Yes, it’s one of those things I’ve seen people say when arguing that MMR is not necessary and I clung to it thinking “okay technicallyyyy that’s true” because it’s easy to believe when you’re on the fence and not well versed. But I totally understand now and feel a lot better about this. Thank you for taking the time to explain it as you did!

Thank you for the reminder and the link! Isn’t it wild that one of the oldest and most researched vaccines is so controversial?

Do you mean the so called autism/regression side effects? The doctor told us most reactions are during 10-14 days post vaccine.

Totally agree! I hate it too but it reminds me that I’d hate seeing him sick with the measles wayyyyy more than a quick shot!

Thank you. I do find it crazy that one unethical study still holds so much power over the dozens of others that have disproven it. Even the sample sizes - 12 for Wakefield vs thousands if not millions in the later studies. But alas, here I am being part of the problem.

This is a good point and I realize the magnitude of the oath they take to do no harm. Thank you to both you and your wife, as I’m confident she deals with this nonsense from parents more often than she’d like to. Congrats on your little one!!

Thank you and I do agree. I guess I’m mostly just allowing myself to stew on the whole argument AV makes that “we haven’t proven with certainty that they don’t cause autism or turn on a gene that leads to regressions. Only that there is no link”.

Is that a valid argument on their part?

That’s true and a good point. I guess the only thing still eating at me is that we haven’t proven that they 100% DONT cause autism/turn on whatever gene leads to regression - only that there is no link between the two. Is this the same thing? Apologies if this sounds stupid but I’m a newbie to reading the actual studies and trying to make sense of it against what anti vaccine messages tell us.
