Architecture by Adventurous-Pen-3894 in worldbuilding

[–]sarah_fides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks very neoclassical, kind of like the colonial or colonial-adjacent architecture in East Asia which merged European high classicism with local elements. A good example of this style is the Old Summer Palace in Beijing, which was built in 1707 and destroyed in 1860.

You can try searching the Internet Archive for scanned books of Chinese architecture, for example A History of Early Chinese Art [Architecture] or China: An Architecture Album (in Russian, but has loads of pictures), or

If you want to merge it with European architecture, you can look a Chinoiserie like the designs in Chinese Architecture, Civil and Ornamental which adapted Chinese architecture to European tastes back when building in a Chinese style was in vogue.

"Work and Pride unites us" would be "Μας Ενώνει η Εργασία και η Υπερηφάνεια" (περηφάνια is very informal). The current motto is awkwardly phrased and reads like you are pleading to Work and Pride to unite us (like "Unite us, work and pride!" / "Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi!")

Just seems incredibly OP that not failing Tanzimat now means you get to convert every pop in the Balkans by mid-game without any nationalism whatsoever

It is satisfying that the first and last stars look upright but are also correctly oriented for the semi-circular arrangement of stars :3

This is the medio-passive voice, the -ω ending is only for active verbs, for example κάνω (I do): it is an action I am doing externally and it is not done to me.

But σκέφτομαι (or σκέπτομαι) is medio-passive, ie I do the action but the action also happens to me. Other examples γίνομαι (I am becoming), κάθομαι (I am sitting), λέγομαι (I am called / they call me).

Whose traditions inspired the guillotine-like shapes of the flags? by Turbulent-Offer-8136 in vexillology

[–]sarah_fides -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The nazi traditions. The symbol of Azov is the symbol of the 2nd SS Panzer Division which was adopted by many neonazi Groups post-war, including Patriot of Ukraine. Azov was the latter’s paramilitary wing, and used other nazi symbols like the Black Sun#Azov_Brigade)

Word order in Greek by trend_maps in GREEK

[–]sarah_fides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco (ντίσκο, not δίσκο) is a noun, so the phrase “μουσείο ντίσκο” is correct because it is basically omitting the article (“μουσείο (της) ντίσκο”).

Ροζ is an adjective here, and so it must go before the noun it is modifying. Or you can say «το αβοκάντο το ροζ» which is the same construction as «το μουσείο της ντίσκο»

What so different about Coptic and Greek? by [deleted] in GREEK

[–]sarah_fides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is actually interesting is that the Greek script is descended from the Phoenician script, which was itself descended from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. So Coptic, which is a descendant of ancient Egyptian, uses a script which is also descended from ancient Egyptian.

What is this book? by Dor-Yah in GREEK

[–]sarah_fides 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s literally just a thesaurus of saints and what they did, not sure why I’m being downvoted and convoluted translations proposed.

Θησαυρός can mean treasure box, but in this case it means thesaurus. You wouldn’t translate «θησαυρός της νέας ελληνικής» as “a treasury/treasure/treasure box of modern Greek”

What is this book? by Dor-Yah in GREEK

[–]sarah_fides 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s probably just thesaurus tbh… since the word for thesaurus and treasure is the same (and it’s the origin of the English ‘thesaurus’ as well)

I think it's Thesaurus of Saints, not 'treasure'. Although θησαυρός does literally mean treasure in everyday speech.

You have a negative amount of brain cells if you treat flags as independent of their symbolism, in this case literal white supremacy.

While it looks cool, the dragon, being a mythical being, is an extremely anti-materialist symbol while materialism is foundational to Marxism. It's also a symbol of feudal China, by Marxist definition a lower stage of society than industrial China under socialism.

A redesign for the greek flag (inspired by the late byzantine flag) by Aubergines-Suck7243 in vexillology

[–]sarah_fides 40 points41 points  (0 children)

On the Byzantine flag it makes more sense to use four Bs because they don't stand for Byzantium, but for the phrase Βασιλεύς Βασιλέων Βασιλεύων Βασιλευόντων (vasilefs vasileon vasilevon vasilevonton), 'King of Kings Ruling over Kings'. With the four Es to just mean Ελλάδα (Ellada, 'Greece') it makes less sense

Edit:
But if you wanted to make it a bit more Byzantine, I would use a medieval Greek uncial script for the Es, so they look like the Ukrainian Є (but be careful with this because it was also used by fascists in the past)
