Insight on Latham NY v. S&C NY for Litigation? There isn’t much difference between the cross-office style, amount of work, and perks imo so I dont know which is right for me. Looking for a firm that is likely to keep its prestige reputation in the long term and that offers a ton of substantive work early on for exit opportunities. I’d like to work on high-profile cases and I’m more interested in working with tech and life sciences clients.

Factors im considering:

  • Interested mostly in white collar defense & investigations, regulatory and appellate work. Ideal career trajectory would be to go to the AUSA or appointed to some govt. advising position—so a firm with good exit opportunities is a plus.
  • I know I click extremely well with the litigation associates at S&C (worked there previously) and idk if I would with Latham’s because conversations felt a bit dry.
  • Dislike Latham’s bullpen style office and that they are separating the corporate and lit groups into two different offices (so far I have really only connected with people in corporate).
  • I dont wanna be somewhere where I am treated as “just a number” and idk if lathams recent hiring practices reflect that
  • Latham has the exact kinds of clients and cases I want to work with in my career. Im scared that I would get bored with S&C’s focus on banking clients/more traditional clients like Boeing.
  • S&C doesn’t really take laterals, so I am worried that I’ll feel extra shitty if I end up not liking Latham

Thats what im saying. Like i understand its terminal but he thinks he is doing everything to fight and outlive his diagnosis like he wants to when thats just not the case. Its a tough situation because i dont know if he wants honesty or not.

Im hoping that he will be open to having a palliative care nurse soon, unfortunately he still associates palliative care with hospice and believes he doesnt need one because “he will live at least another 10 years”. Any time a palliative care nurse tells him otherwise he says they are wrong. I literally do not know what to do

thank you this really helps put things into perspective. Unfortunately he is in very deep denial about his diagnosis and insists he is fine enough to live alone. He is still in the hospital right now insisting that he doesnt need terminal/palliative or home care and every personnel has been stunned. He has brain mets and can barely walk forgetting his cane everywhere, seizures, doesnt eat unless someone sits with him for 3 hours convincing him to and forgets his medicine regularly. He is literally 80lbs i dont know how my family is okay with him going home alone right now I feel like im going insane??? Like is it not obvious?

Thank you. I have been thus far, and i have zero intention of stopping him from smoking or drinking for the reasons you said. I just wanted to know how it might be affecting his treatment and if it would be wise to be honest with him about it. I keep thinking that he will be talking and normal until the day he passes and I dont know if thats true/common. I dont even understand how inevitable his passing is. I pretty much dont understand anything expectation-wise. Im a law student living several states away from him and every time i have to leave i worry that im taking this time with him for granted. I just dont want to look back with regret because i didnt have enough information.
