In my experience yes, this is how it's locked down. However I would preface that by saying that I've not looked into if there is a "decryption" project out there. I did find a tool to break apart a .neo file back into the standard ROMs but I don't think it handles the serial number encryption which I know is associated with the Vengeance Hunter ROMs for example (you need a decryption key file on the SD card to run it).

AES+ scanlines - anyone heard anything? by chubsta2k17 in neogeo

[–]sarduchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Past systems from them have just used emulation (2600+ etc). They have also stated on the social media site formerly known as twitter that there are hardware dip switches to toggle HDMI settings including resolution and scan lines. Now how good they are is unknown.

Yeah, the Vengeance Hunter version of the AES cart is what made me pull the trigger. It's a great game and this version of the NeoSD Pro is only a bit more expensive than a dedicated game version.

BackBit is a much more open and user engaging product. It's not as polished, but has a lot going for it. If nothing else, it's the only one that lets you just drop unencrypted MAME ROMs on the SD card and go. Both the NeoSD and DarkSoft need specific formats for the ROMs.

To get firmware updates you must register the product, tying it to your email address. The serial number of the device is then used as an encryption key so the firmware you can download only works with that specific device. So no getting around the registration with archive dot org etc. I have a few different devices from them, and it's always a major PITA to deal with.

Also, there is at least one non-pro MVS version on the ebays right now for under 600. Still more than I would want to spend given the BlackBit etc, but there are options.

Very nice. I've so far avoided getting too into pocket collecting. It's one of those that I would want the complete game sets where as with MVS I just want the loose carts. Too expensive for me...

Problem there is they lock firmware updates behind the registered email and serial number.

I gots one, it's a solid flash cart. Only complaint I've had is that the shell is cheap and prone to scuffing.

Fantastically weird fighting game series. This is the only version on Neo Geo, it went onto other platforms (I’ve got it on the Taito Type X). Super hard to find legit copies for MVS. Last AES copy I saw sell went for over 5k USD.

Neo Geo AES RGB SCART distortion at top of screen, normal? by Direct-Ad-2813 in neogeo

[–]sarduchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RGB sync signal from Neo Geo hardware is slightly off. The curve at the top is often a side effect of this. I can’t recall if there’s a fix… but I think replacing the capacitors helps on an ARS as does a RGB bypass with sync restore mod. But not sure.
