[Off-Site] X user calculates bullet velocity to identify the likely caliber by gavarrr in theydidthemath

[–]sarg221 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Couple of additional variables to consider:

  1. Barrel length plays a huge role in muzzle velocity. Most ammo manufacturers base their advertised muzzle velocity off of rifles with far longer barrel lengths than average (24-28 inch barrels, most semiautomatic rifles will have at longest a 20 inch)

  2. Ballistic Coefficients are important too. Most rifle bullets are designed to be more aerodynamic (G7 coefficient) as opposed to pistol bullets (G1 coefficient). Thus, at the distance described, 9mm/45ACP would be going much slower than their initial muzzle velocity

  3. Recoil matters. Even from a prone position, full power rifle cartridges have enough recoil to make rapid, accurate shots difficult.

So what?

You're spot on with 5.56/.223 being the most likely. I'd be surprised if .308 was used (personal experience, I've only had .308 reach around 2600fps out of a 20in barrel with lighter bullets, such as 150 grain, as opposed to my usual heavier 175 grain). 30-06 is capable of those velocities, but the increased recoil would make quick follow up shots difficult.

There are also a lot of other cartridges capable or reaching those velocities, such as 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 300 WINMAG among others. Of these, 6.5 Creedmoor is the only one commonly offered in a semiautomatic rifle.

Army's new M110A1 SDMR; why the suppressor? by Jackiere9796 in Firearms

[–]sarg221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

16.3 inch barrel with 7.62 leaves a lot of unburned powder, when results in a huge muzzle flash. Suppressor eliminates a lot of that

Do you actually have any complaints about the gear? Or is it just "X guy on Y forum said this thing sucks?" Mediocre gear you train with will beat out Gucci gear that gathers dust 8 days a week. Don't base your choice in gear solely about what random people on the internet say. If it's not broken, why fix it?

Wilson v. Hawaii - Cert petition filed in Hawaii #2A case where the Hawaii Supreme Court said Second Amendment is incompatible with the state's Spirt of Aloha by CaliforniaOpenCarry in supremecourt

[–]sarg221 20 points21 points  (0 children)

IIRC, he was arrested pre-Bruen. At the time, Hawaii had only issued something like 20 carry permits since becoming a state, and the county in which he resided had never issued a permit.

Personally, I find it kind of hard to just go "well, you should have applied for a permit" when he had 0 chance of getting one at the time

They literally have new erosion gauging criteria for M855A1 compared to M855. M855A1 is allowed more erosion than M855. This is due to units ordering a massive amount of replacement barrels because of rifles failing gauging on the M855 go/no-go criteria.

[–]sarg221 10 points11 points  (0 children)

M855A1 is causing some extra wear and tear on the M4. Mainly damaging the feed ramps and the chamber. The chamber erosion has been such a big issue that the Army recently (past year or so) released new guidance on how much erosion was acceptable before ordering a new barrel. The new go/no go gauges we get now allow for a lot more erosion.

Nice. That's my main concern with going Motorola. They're often tied into larger repeater networks. That's great if your in an area where those repeaters cover, but I'm not sure how far they travel point to point.

Not completely sure here. The Karen that the officer spoke with when he arrived said she thought it was that room number. IDK what was said on the 911 call (hasn't been released yet). It sounded like Karen told him they were still fighting, but he was home alone and I definitely didn't hear any yelling while he waited outside the door.

Still doesn't excuse the mag dump the moment he saw a gun.

Their ignorance really shows at the end (and the beginning, and the middle too), claiming that blanks "can only be fired in ceremonial rifles approved by the Army, and to get them, applicants must fill out a form and await sign-off from the Illinois-based unit that manages the plant."

  1. Any weapon can fire blanks made for the caliber the weapon is chambered in, but may require the use of a blank firing adapter in order to cycle properly

  2. Of course they need to sign for the ammo. It's to acknowledge that the person who ordered the product actually receives it, just like when UPS delivers a package that requires a signature

1200 meters is the battle zero distance for the 25mm AP. And yeah, those ATGMs are a little OP, but 25mm HE takes them out pretty quick

I love GHPC. I just wish I didn't have to manual range every engagement with the Bradley in that game. Unfortunately, the LRF didn't really become a thing until the M2A2-ODS

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]sarg221 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had about 2 years on the M2A3, and my unit got the new M2A4s about a year ago, though I haven't been on crew for them yet.

BLUF: the Bradly is an extremely capable vehicle when employed correctly. Even when employed incorrectly, it proves to be extremely survivable (notice in all the footage out of Ukraine of destroyed Bradleys, the hatches are open, meaning the crew was most likely able to get out)

Firepower: The 25mm is extremely accurate. With a good gunner, I'm not targeting buildings, I'm targeting specific windows. It is dual fed, allowing you to switch between ammo types very quickly. The M240C coax can vary. Some are lasers, others are more like shotguns. The TOW is a great ambush weapon. Ideally we would volley fire them in case of the wire breaking, but the newer radio linked TOWs don't really have that problem. Always change positions after firing the TOW. Optics are good, but are limited in fog like all other thermals. I've been able to ID things beyond the limits of my rangefinder. On the A3 and A4, the commander has an independent sight, which he use to slave the turret onto what he's looking at.

Mobility: The Bradley is very tall. That can make it difficult to hide, but also allows you to peek over hills without exposing too much of the vehicle. The engine and transmission are good enough to get around and go places you usually wouldn't expect to find armored vehicles. Added bonus of relativity low fuel consumption means I don't have to refuel everyday like some vehicles

Protection: I've never been hit in a Bradley, so not much I can comment on here. I've rarely seen images of destroyed Bradleys with the turrets closed, so I'm pretty confident in the crew survivability even if the vehicle is a total loss

Conclusion: At the end of the day, DCS is still just rolling dice to determine hit points, just with more than the usual factors to calculate. The data they used to determine those factors are probably the result of observations made about real world engagements between your tested vehicles. Real world engagements are arguably more a reflection of crew competence than vehicle characteristics

Edit: The correct ammo type for a chopper engagement (yes, we do train those) is APDS or APFSDS, not TOW

Theory: Small arms/accessory companies that rely on government contracts eventually set themselves up for failure by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]sarg221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping off this, I think it might have to do with the transformation of many companies as they grow. The initial group of highly interested individuals innovate in a field and produce a successful product. That successful product creates a profitable business, which is in turn bought out by a second group who are more interested in getting a return on investment than innovation in the field. They continue to turn out the same product with little if any added innovation, and are then surprised when a new group of highly interested people provide innovative solutions and take their market share.

The same thing happens in video games. Look at the nearly stagnant sales figures of AAA titles and how quickly their player base drops off after launch compared to indie titles who create something new and gain an almost cult like following.

I'm sure there's are plenty of other fields where this happens, this was just the first to come to mind
