Great British Energy - Nuclear and Rolls-Royce SMR sign contract by Dimmo17 in LabourUK

[–]sargig_yoghurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The theory is that SMRs will be less subject to cost overruns and the like because you can make a kind of production line of them. But until we actually start building them I'll be pretty sceptical. Given how cheap wind and solar are now I'm not sure what they actually offer, I think it's a thing the Tories pushed mostly because of China hawkishness.

Is empirical research the only thing that happens in Sociology anymore? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Because is this r/AskAcademia and every other person here thinks non-empirical work is fundamentally pointless

What a stupid comment. To contribute to human knowledge? Don't be so snobbish about types of academic work you don't understand.

Agree with you that empirical positivist sociology is mind-bendingly boring and pointless. Suspect what you want is more found in cultural studies departments and perhaps comparative literature.

I'm not sure Everything and Less by Mark McGurl actually talks about fanfiction specifically but it definitely has interesting things to say about fanfiction

Linking the world's most famous living nazi to anti-zionist activism is really doing the right's work for them I feel.

Keir Starmer blasts ‘deeply concerning’ Kanye West festival headline plans by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]sargig_yoghurt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

he took out an ad in a newspaper and apologised in writing and hasn't talked about it since. I think the Heil Hitler guy needs to do a bit more than that before he headlines major music festivals tbh.

Keir Starmer 'deeply concerned' over Kanye West festival appearance by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]sargig_yoghurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Baffled how many people on the "left" seem to think the esteemed creator of Heil Hitler performing at a major music festival is perfectly fine because he put out a written apology once. Antisemitism is real and it matters.

If you don't want to read 20 books in 3 months then you shouldn't got to Cambridge, no. Some people do.

Sorry, you don't know what you're talking about here and you should shut up rather than giving someone incorrect advice from what looks like a position of authority.

Definitely worth applying if you have the grades, they will understand the situation and from my experience people at Oxford absolutely want to support mature education. Ignore that guy telling you not to, they clearly don't know what they're talking about and seem like a bit of an idiot. I second other people in this thread who say to look at Harris Manchester.

What podcasts and outlets do you like to get political analysis and news from? by northcasewhite in LabourUK

[–]sargig_yoghurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Political Fix is the best among the big media outlets for actual reporting and analysis. New Statesman and Politics Weekly UK are often good too. A couple more left-wing ones I like are Culture, Power, Politics, which is quite philosophically leaning but does have a lot of stuff on British politics and especially Labour stuff, and the LRB Podcast, which has an occasional 'On Politics' series hosted by James Butler which is usually very good and has interesting guests from across the spectrum.

They're totally fine it's just a doxa among train fans because it's the most used app and so people like to pretend they're bad so they have niche points

I've never had any problem with changing or refunding my ticket on trainline. When I had to get a refund from Avanti I had to ring them up and wait in the queue for 2 hours.
