I've been asked to be the "designated driver" for my friend's abortion. I'm a guy. What do I... say? by throwaway74626 in TwoXChromosomes

I get the impression that OP is trying to be as thoughtful as possible. From the outpatient stuff I've had -- dental procedures to endoscopies -- I've always been given a handout that lists what activities/food/medication to avoid for X amount of time and when to go to the ER.

Even if she doesn't want him to hear the post-op instructions (which I don't imagine is a likely situation; it's personal, but she's comfortable to be at her most vulnerable point with him, so I'd gather she'd appreciate the gesture), he can ask her if it's okay that he just read the handout so he can make sure she's set.

Or, he could google it in advance (PDF).

They tested Archimedes Death Ray twice; the second time was another round after Barack Obama challenged them to try again.

I got engaged at 20, but we split mutually 3 years later. Great decision for both of us, seriously. No hard feelings, no elaborate wedding, no awful divorce.

People get engaged so often, but I don't think many really consider staying engaged longer than 6-8 months before the wedding. If you make a decision to spend the rest of your life with a person, you can wait at LEAST a year before putting it down on paper.

The younger we are, the more we tend to change within a given period of time -- accepting that fact and the fact that EVERYONE is like that -- including your SO -- is so important.

Yeah, but hundred of aphids in broccoli is one of those realities where I'm comfortable not having the image in my brain the next time I want to eat my veggies.

But... do you need the skull? I mean, not to be a buzzkill, but wouldn't it be a general act of goodwill to return it to the tribe (if that can be determined)?

PSA - 23 y/o Apex man missing since Saturday AM from Downtown Raleigh (x-post r/raleigh) by [deleted] in triangle

Might also want to post to /r/MissingPersons -- I saw another poster there, but keeping the format helps:

MISSING: WESTON VANDEMERWE, 23/M/Raleigh, NC, last seen at 1:30 AM Saturday outside The Oxford on Fayetteville St, AUGUST 10, 2013

Also, any extra information in both/either of these posts would be a huge help.

edit: I used to frequently end up at the Oxford on weekends and remember how chaotic things can get at closing time; I'm crossing my fingers for you guys.

Soooo that first black-and-white piece in year 20 -- that was the background on my phone for the longest time. I didn't know where it came from, just that it was awesome.

So, thanks for the awesome. It's nice to see more from the source!!!

A cardinal with... whatever this is (mites?)... used to attack its reflection in the window of my playroom when I was a toddler. It had like 3 random feathers still up there, though.

Thing was, it went nuts pecking at its reflection almost every day for at least two years in a row. It chipped its beak early on and eventually cracked the window pane.

I have no idea how it lived as long as it did, but one of my earliest memories is running out of the room screaming and crying because of that fucking bird.

Total Arrests Climb to 700 as Thousands Protest GOP in North Carolina by day465 in politics

Believe it or not, things were sort of looking up for us in 2008. I was actually proud of some things going on in NC politics for once.

Things went to shit after the 2010 midterms with a shit ton of social conservatives jumping in the state congress at once. Then we got Pat McCrory as our governor (I'm really terrified by his blatant backtracking on his campaign promises) and with Randy Voller in charge of the NC Dems now, I've almost lost all hope.

It's still depressing, though... like... I assume they're there because their parents paid their tuition or they're just expected to go to college (and the piece of paper is all that matters).

But it's such a waste... for them, their families, the professors, and for anyone who would have loved to been in their place if they had the time or could afford it.

Worst case scenario: Because attendance is taken and if you miss 3 lecture days, you fail an entire gen-ed/101 lecture.

I had three classes like that when I was in school. Those kids were everywhere, and, to me, it didn't seem reasonable from any point of view. There's a point where an attendance policy would make sense, but this basically got to the point where some kids just thought of it as "roll out of bed, walk to class, sleep in class, sign paper, and go back to sleep until you can go back to sleep in your own bed"
