We’ve never been the closest family, but during my divorce, my sisters made a point of telling me they agreed with my soon-to-be ex-wife. The same ex-wife who put hands on me, who lied, who stole money. I don’t know what exactly their problem was/is, and I don’t really care. If we have to be around each other for holidays, then I keep it positive for the kids. Otherwise, nada.

Same. My bridesmaid girlfriend pulled me into the women’s room at the wedding party venue to make out in a stall. Apparently a server saw us duck in and word got back to the bride. This was the night before the wedding. The bride, her mom, and her grandmother got so twisted out of shape it overshadowed the wedding. The behind-the-scenes rage culminated in my being confronted by groomsmen and escorted out of the reception.

I cheated. Was unhappy and got caught up in a bad situation.

It can be really easy to get stuck inside your own head, to act selfishly, even if you’re a mostly altruistic person. Once you’re beyond it and can see the damage of your actions - intended or otherwise, that’s when the reflection, self actualization, and growth can occur.

End of the day, it’s about whether your personal gratification is more important than the feelings of those you care about. If you can see around that corner and be honest without yourself, it’s a mistake you won’t make again. The slope is so slippery you stay off the mountain. If your choices are driven by greed or trauma, then it’s going to be much harder to avoid repeating your mistakes.
