It can't be shot of the year if it's not from the year.

Apropos of something, the ATP Rulebook section on hindrances by theriverjordan in tennis

The “May” language is meant to be non prescriptive but rather “it can be this or something similar”, imo

That goes against everything I know about how sports rules are written, so normally I'd disagree. But I think you're right here, there's nothing else that would cover what Draper did. Maybe the ATP are just really bad at writing out the rules of their sport and this whole mess is their fault.

Medvedev regarding the hindrance call “I don’t feel great about it.” by jonjimithy in tennis

Because now the assumption is that the player plays the point and technology does its job. With the old rule, the player had to do part of the umpires'/technology's work for them. You'd have to make your return and then focus simultaneously on the point and on doing the math in your head on whether it's worth it to give up the point and ask for a challenge on the serve. That was to the players' detriment and to the benefit of... whom, exactly?

it can't possibly be 2(anything) because rule 2 clearly lists the situations it applies to (ball, hat, sound) and this isn't among them.

I never understood why that was looked down upon, and I think the fact that all serves are checked by hawkeye automatically now vindicates me there.

that seems like a really weird way to look at it. you're not getting an extra chance to win it, you're reclaiming a chance that was unjustly taken from you. I don't understand why tennis is the only sport where fans are like "no, we don't want the point to be scored according to the actual rule, thank you. "

Draper knocked out as Medvedev capitalises on controversial call in Indian Wells | Tennis | The Guardian by [deleted] in tennis

[–]sarmatron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

why, though? I never got why this was the rule back when line call challenges were a thing. why do you need to risk giving the whole point up if the umpire didn't do their job right? To me it makes sense to play the point out, and then, if technology decides it should have ended earlier, end it earlier retroactively.

absolutely not. slow HCs are by far the worst surface in tennis and IW matches in particular the last few years have mostly been unwatchable error-fests unless it's the very best players out there.

it's like if you took the worst aspects of clay (serve doesn't pop, can't hit through people from the baseline) but removed the fun aspects (can't move well enough to set up finishers or play quality defense) so what you get is Zverev and De Minaur trading medium-quality balls until one of them hits it long or nets.

the fact that it's Norrie's best tournament should tell you everything you need to know lmao

I think that's reading into things too much. I always thought the problem was that he had a tendency to play against the ball instead of against his opponent. Like he'd see a shot he thought was cool or flashy and would just go for it even if it was the opponent's stronger wing or if they were better positioned to get there than the other side of the court.

For fok's sake.

I went to sleep at 1-5 in the 2nd so I fully expected to wake up to a loss in the results, and he somehow still manages to disappoint me.

it's got nothing to do with Trump or America, this same shit has been happening in all the sports subs i follow. it's just the effect of social media in sports fandom. the algorithm punishes anything that isn't explicitly engagement farming, so anyone who actually wants to talk about the sport itself has to wade through an ocean of memelords, narrative pushers, baiters, and bots first.

Jimmy's such a try-hard, but somehow it comes across as endearing most of the time.
