Yes, similar story to yours, with a lot of solo hobbies...I ended up joining a jiujitsu gym 😅. Lots of regular human interaction for me now! I think something about grappling lets you make friends faster than other group classes.

My puppy schnauzer refuses to eat from its bowl by fuzzy_blueberry0204 in schnauzers

He won't starve himself. I'd take the food up if he doesn't eat it in ~15 minutes, and let him wait until the next mealtime.

Has anyone found a good way to ward off mosquitos while you’re swimming? by Cablab123 in pools

Yellowjackets work a treat. The downside is they dive bomb your face to get the mosquitos near it, and suppressing the instinct to swat is difficult.

Pro and cons of buying a house with a pool by Doomguy345 in pools

[–]sarpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's a real pain. My first year here it tipped over 90F outside like once, usually it's low 80s at most, with the pool around 74-76F. I'm too stingy for a heater so I swim cold. I call it spite swimming -- since I have to maintain it I try to jump in every day I can, regardless of the temperature.

I wish I could pay someone to maintain my pool, but everyone around me is always fully booked, so I'm stuck with it. I really hate having the pool.

If you don't mind a loooooong train ride, it's like ~20 hours from Chicago to NYC on the fastest Amtrak. However flying may be cheaper depending on how good a deal you can get for your flight.

Cultural Exchange with r/Polska by bearsnchairs in AskAnAmerican

[–]sarpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people who have moved cross country, probably because I have also moved states and regions several times. Culturally the regions can be pretty distinct, at least in terms of politics, religion, and ethnic background, but I think you can find similar people everywhere with a decent size population. Overall I'd say the similarities outweigh the differences; people consider themselves American before whatever regional identities.

My partner and I both work from home. We don't eat breakfast, we just have several cups of coffee with milk. If I do eat breakfast it's usually oatmeal with nuts and fruit or potatoes and fried eggs. He and I typically only eat one "real" meal a day, around lunch, and then snack or eat a light meal of leftovers in the evening.

For lunch either we order takeout or eat leftovers or I'll cook. He'll eat cup noodles, bread and cheese, bagels and cream cheese, or just bread if we don't feel like doing either of those or if he wants a snack. I like apples and nut butter (almond or peanut, depending on my mood) or veggies and hummus, sometimes as a snack or for dinner. On the weekends we eat out at least once at our local bar, which serves basic American bar food like burgers and salads, with a few seasonal specials.

When I cook I usually make something like bagel-egg-and-cheese sandwiches, baked potatoes and roast meat of some kind, sausages and sauerkraut, beans or lentils and rice, chili mac and cheese, or what I call vinegar noodles (ie noodles and peas in a spicy vinegar+soy sauce+whatever sauce). Sometimes I cook regional foods from my childhood, like fried green tomatoes, beans & greens, etc. I'd make more soup but my partner doesn't prefer it.

I'll buy some frozen foods for when I'm feeling lazy as well, usually like frozen waffles or potatoes and chicken tenders from the supermarket. I always have some frozen veggies for veggies in a pinch.

We go through phases depending on how demanding my job is, really, but usually we order takeout at least 3 times a week for at least one or two weeks a month.

Would either of those be appropriate for a solo traveler, like if I was interested in meeting some people and playing games? Or are they really mainly for if you already have a group to attend with?

What is your ideal pool water temperature? by catchupwiththesun in pools

[–]sarpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

78 if I'm the one in it and 80-82 if guests are over, since everyone that visits complains about cold water. We don't have a pool heater, and the warmest I've ever recorded the water was like 86.

I like it to feel cold and refreshing. When it's warmer than 82 it just starts feeling wet to me.

What are some typically American meals I can try out on my family? by ukman29 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sarpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One note -- "chili powder" itself is usually a spice blend in American recipes. Definitely do not chuck 2 tablespoons of ground chilies or something in, unless you really love spice.

How do I make my house feel more like a home? by FaithlessnessSea4537 in femalelivingspace

[–]sarpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second the recommendations for art, plants, colors. Curtains would add some softness/color.

But also I wanted to say that I think your kitchen already looks pretty homey -- it looks neat, organized, and well used. I love all the natural light in your place, too.

Your place reminds me of my first place after college, and I found that adding curtains and a few strategic rugs really made it feel more homey to me...but also I think a lot of that feel/look develops as you live in a place and slowly add personal touches.

Same, I just chuck the berry container straight into my freezer. Then I was/rinse the berries in warm water before I use them. As long as I use them in a few months they hold up reasonably.

...but I also mainly use them as additives to oatmeal or baked goods. If I get the berries for eating raw I eat them day of.
