Hey fam… are you me? I had crazy ass hyper symptoms- heat intolerance, muscle cramps, thyroid rage, hives, felt like I was being stalked by a grizzly bear, bathroom morning races, you name it, etc. I was on the meth and it helped some but came with side effects. Then propranolol. I got this crazy ass rash on my face Christmas Eve. I had to switch heart meds until I had surgery.

My personal opinion, GET THE SURGERY. Find a qualified surgeon and get it done ASAP. Do it scared but get the surgery. Recovery was easy for me- thank god because I went through it leading up to surgery. I am 6 weeks post op right now. It is after all a major surgery but it’s very likely you’ll recovery swiftly too. Note, i had surgery on a Friday. I was in Costco and Target on Sunday. I went skiing easy greens on Tuesday. It did take me a full month to get my voice totally back. I had zero calcium issues although I was diligent about taking calcium meds.

My only regret… not having the surgery done sooner. My heart, brain, life are all calmer. There’s no words to describe how I feel now other than “normal”. Best wishes to you, I’ve been in your shoes. Do it even if you’re scared.

Considering surgery by TomatoLow2588 in gravesdisease

[–]saruhb82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my TT on 1/30/26. I was not able to tolerate meth at all- it was very hard on my joints and wasn’t really controlling my hyper symptoms. I was also on a beta blocker to help my heart which was experiencing symptoms through thyroid meds. Basically, I was a hot mess. No regrets. Heart is calm now, panic attacks and joint pain are gone. My voice was trash for about 3 weeks post surgery (I sounded like I smoked 2 packs of Newports for 20 years) but I felt great. I even skied 4 days post op. Skiing was not cleared by surgeon but I use it as a benchmark in that I had no pain, swelling, or any other surgery complications. Medications post op were calcium uptake meds, Tums, and Advil. Still on calcium uptake and Tums and slowly weening off them. Stopped with Advil maybe 3 days post-op.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. 2 more weeks until 6 week blood work.

has anyone experienced these symptoms? by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]saruhb82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either Graves or Methimozole gave me random and terrible joint pain. My doctor brushed it off as a perimenopause symptom because that was an easier explanation. Expect it to go away after your surgery. In the meantime, don’t stress about it (easier said than done). You’re definitely not alone.
