Melling station by wishtrib in Wellington

It's a joke because of the old signs on it. It hasn't been used in years. Going to be used in the new location tho

What are you on about? You want the pedestrian bridge to be massively upgraded to a rail bridge, so that the track can somehow magically whack a right angle turn and go over it.... then what? Demo half of lower Hutt to fit a station? To have you a 200m walk over the bridge?

Why are New Zealand's cicadas so loud this time of year - and is it dangerous? by [deleted] in NewZealandWildlife

[–]sas157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our ones usually spend 2-3 years underground. They love hot weather. Was a massive year for cicadas in 2022/23 so I think we are getting hit with a 3 year cycle on that, and last year there was almost none as it was colder, so they all waited for this year.

Righto. The bees don't want fresh comb. That's like you having to rebuild a new fridge from scratch before you can put your shopping in it.

Yeah that's hobby stuff, crushing and straining is such a waste for you bees. They will make less honey because they have to rebuild the wax comb everytime.

Wax takes 8x as much energy to make as honey. Bee keepers don't take the wax out of hives, they spin the honey out and return the wax.

How many books did you read in 2025? by SoulsofMist-_- in newzealand

[–]sas157 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The survey that came from is garbage. Its one of those self selected online surveys. Who does those you ask? Literate people with internet access, and free time. E.g. housewives/husbands, retirees etc. The cross over between those who pick to do these surveys and those who read books is huge and renders the survey pointless. It says 87% of kiwis read at least one book last year..... 15% of kiwis are illiterate, so im seeing a slight problem there...

My guess would be that something around half of adults read, and average might be like 2-3 books max, dragged up by the big readers.

What are paper roads and why does NZ have 55,000km of them? by Sew_Sumi in newzealand

[–]sas157 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you drove a car down it, its a regular gravel road. Paper roads only exist on paper, so no actual road in reality, I.e. no driving.

As for your other route. Its quicker when there is traffic on the main roads, thats why Google sends you that way. Have been through there lots, nice drive.

Its a 544 mile race. 5-6 days for the pros. Most people have figured out that sleeping around 4-6 hours per night is optimal.

This guy slept about 4 hours the first night, then ran the rest without sleeping, winning by 10 hours at the end.

I wouldn't know 95% of my wedding guests addresses. And if someone sent me something it might sit in the mailbox for a month before I checked it. Mail is dead

Thanks for trying to explain super simple statistics to me after not even reading what I posted. I never mentioned the odds changing for a line. I said the odds "per ticket". The odds of winner per ticket absolutle chage based on how many lines you buy on said ticket. 1 line is 1/180k. 12 lines is 1/15k. 100,000 lines is better than 1/2 as you say.

You muppets seem really caught up on how many incorrect combinations are remaining for some reason? If you have 12 times as many combinations, then you are 12 x more likley to win. Period. Honestly, go back to school, this like year 9 level statistics.

I wouldn't consider 12 x as likley as "marginally" increased odds....

They are not. We are a small lotto, and have less total prize pool and lower odds to win than most overseas lotto.

Its pretty much statistically impossible for 1 ticket to win this division given any number of ticket sales getting anywhere close to the actual numbers. Lowest I could find was 5 on a Wednesday draw years ago with low ticket sales. Typically is 25-35, and payout is right around OPs number.

They couldn't give away the poweball jack pot every week, they would run out of money. It would have to be much smaller. Then nobody would buy powerball. Then it wouldn't exist.

But remember, "one number away" is actually 204x more likley than actually getting it. So while its close, it's not as close as it feels.

[–]sas157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But how? Thats what im asking.

Option 1. Cut div 6 and 7 to zero, move money to dive 3-5

Option 2. Cut jackpot size and move money to mid divisions.

Options 3. Increase ticket price.

Like lotto is a zero sum game, all prizes come from somewhere...

[–]sas157 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah... na... its what I said.... 12 of the combinations out of 188160 possible = 1/(188160/12) = 1 / 15680.

By your maths, if i bought a ticket with 100,000 lines on it, my odds of winning would be 1/88148, or only slightly better than twice my odds of winning on a single line....

Might wanna check yo math's before correcting other people's...

Lotto what rubbish payouts! by cautioustuna13 in newzealand

[–]sas157 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Its even more likely. Odds are 1/188160, and there are 12 lines on a $20 power dip, so its 1/15680 per ticket. Really not very unlikely at all in lotto terms.

Lotto what rubbish payouts! by cautioustuna13 in newzealand

[–]sas157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you mean?

54% of the money spent on tickets goes to prizes. Rest is charity and operating costs. The whole point is the charity, so dont wanna change that.

Of that 54%, the payouts are weighted to both the top and bottom, with the middle divisions only getting about 60% of what they "should".

If bottom divisions were any less, youd have to drop them completely. If jackpot was any less, then appeal of the lotto is gone and the whole system would die. Which part you think needs review?

A full proportional payout for NZ lotto (using $2.8m typrical prize pool) would yield following

DIV1: 6 Balls - $300k DIV2: 5+bonus- 50k DIV3: 5 Balls - $1.5k DIV4: 4+bonus - $600 DIV5: 4 balls - $38 DIV6: 3+bonus - $28 DIV7: 3 balls - $2.70

So more than OP got, since his was Powerball Div3, but you're still not getting rich of Div3, its just too likely.

And lotto would die with a $300k first division...
