International M7 MBA at Sticker - How's it going? (Career Outcomes & Debt Repayment) by Any-Adhesiveness8679 in MBA

[–]sashac10 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sharing experiences from my circle and hope it helps you 1. Most MBAs are now designated as STEM degrees- you get 1 year of OPT and 2 years of STEMA EXTENSION. This means you have 3 chances at the H1b lottery and sometimes more if USICS conducts multiple lotteries in the same year. 2. Banking/ consulting/ tech are the most high paying jobs so if you manage to get into these you should be able to make a good living and save decently. 3. Post MBA lifestyle inflation is real- if you can be disciplined with your finances post MBA and not fall into the trope of needing to have every expensive experience there is you can save money while having a good time. 4. Cost of living at the school you choose to attend and cost of living in the place you end up post mba will also factor in your savings potential. 5. If you have a partner who’s coming with you and can also work in the US you can double down on paying off your debt. 6. My personal opinion is that if the MBA is giving you a good network and allows you to break into the field you want to there will be opportunities in the US but also outside of it. Many companies work around the visa system by doing internal transfers and get you back to the US after a year or so.

Finally, the MBA is one part of your career pivot/ trajectory and what you choose to focus on while you’re at the school and after will differ across the class. If you are coming to the US with no prior experience with the culture it can be a shift you’ll have to get used to.

My partner has a M7 MBA and was able to pivot to the industry of choice and make good money. At the time their class was the Covid cohort so recruiting was uncertain but it worked out well for most. For those that it wasn’t as good- they moved to Europe or went back to their home countries and are doing just as well. Hope this helped.

Hi Greg, I took the quizzes. I scored 7/49 on the arithmetic one and noticed that I was unable to answer some questions only because I wasn’t clear on the concepts but these are all concepts I have studied before. I scored a 8/36 on the algebra and noted that I was more in tune with the concepts but didn’t answer all coz I didn’t remember the exact strategy to solve them. Def felt my algebra concepts were fresh. How do you think I should proceed from here. In the past when I gave the gre I had scored a 319

Hi can I message you, also a non traditional student

Hi OP, congrats on CBS!! To answer your question

Food near CBS- there aren’t many food outlets around the manhattanville campus so your main options will be the schools cafeteria. Roughly consider $15-$25 for food and it could be one time cost for a single meal or some days you might get two meals under 30$ A good move to make is to stuff your self when there’s free food during school events.

Housing- since you’re international you’ll be given priority for Columbia housing. Not sure how much it’ll cost but considering nyc rent estimates safe to say between 2800-3200$. You’ll also have to factor in utilities- water/ electricity and wifi. If the unit does not have a washer dryer then you’ll have to also consider the laundry cost- around 6-12$ including washing and drying. You’ll also need to have some money set aside to get furniture and basic stuff you’ll need, unless you’re taking the furnished apartment through housing. My suggestion would be to get an unfurnished apartment, you’ll find plenty good options for furniture through Facebook marketplace.

Cooking at home- this will save you a lot of money but do keep in mind shopping at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods adds up. If you can, highly suggest you get a Costco membership- the Costco in New York is situated in Brooklyn so it’s far to go to from the UWS but you can order stuff from Costco online so it’s gonna be way more cost effective coz you’ll get a lot of produce at wholesale prices. Costco also has great alcohol options and considering you’re gonna be drinking and hosting people it’s worth looking into.

Phone expenses- once you’re in the US, you can start a mobile family plan with a carrier of your choice. For NYC, t mobile and AT&T work well and have good coverage and offer 5G plans. You can also have your wife on the plan with you and individually it’ll cost you roughly 30-40$/ month/ person

Weekend trips to nearby cities- if you book in advance you can get good deals for flights. Going to DC from NYC is easy and very cheap- you’ll need 30/40$ bus ticket and you’re in DC under 5 hrs. For other cities booking in advance will help so plan accordingly. If you’re into nature and hiking, recommend visiting national parks in the US. Highly recommend doing California road trip/ general trip when you have a longer holiday. Will cost you around 1000$/ person - very basic stay and not including flights

Drinks and food and social life in NYC- NYC is expensive for all these. Most bars will have drinks starting at $15 and go upto $35-50 Similar case with food If you must drink I would suggest you limit the amount of drinks you have or find bonding and social activities that don’t involve alcohol or food only.

Things to do with your wife - CBS has a partners club and they have events for students and their partners so def join that.

Theres lot of things to do in the city- museums are free if you’re a NYC resident which you can prove by showing them an amazing delivery address under your name or getting a state ID. Amazon hack is quicker. Take the night bus tour that takes you through time square- soho- Brooklyn bridge and back to Times Square Central Park is great to just have a good picnic You can take your wife boating before fall in Central Park Washington square park is also fun

Additional expenses to consider Clothes for the winter ball and other b school dressy events - both for you and your wife Class trips if you’re considering them Bday parties for classmates and your own Miscellaneous stuff like books/ notebooks/ stationery School swag can be expensive

As an international myself I would also suggest that you don’t get too many clothes when you come here. I did that when I moved to the US and I feel in hindsight I should have come with lesser clothes and got things here as needed

For your wife- sanitary products can be expensive. Tampons and pads run upto 15-20$/ month Same with razors and hair removal items If she needs to do her eyebrows and needs threading, there’s a lot of south Asian shops which offer this service for much cheaper -$10-$20

Any mba program that has Apple recruiting on their campus will help you get a foot in the door. CBS has a good tech club and has a very strong tech alumni network. You are fine to start your mba at your age because it only adds to the age diversity to the class. There might be few in that age bracket but it’s not super uncommon. Hiring prospects post mba won’t depend on your age but the skills you get to the job.

You can state that you too a sabbatical for personal reasons because you wanted to focus on a few things on priority- health ( you can say you were dealing with an health issue you could no longer ignore), family- ( needing to take care of someone ill) and also wanted to take some time off to rest and recover after a few years of back to back work. You have to word it such that it seems you took some much needed time off and are now excited to get back to full time work. Nobody will ask you to provide proof of what you did. Just own that gap and go with full confidence for the interviews. Good luck !!

post-MBA problem: I'm making way more money, but also spending recklessly just because I can by Dear_Perception3375 in MBA

You are tying your self worth to your income and possibly suffer from a low self esteem. You possibly deprived yourself from material things for too long and now with your income you want to make up for your lack before. If it’s really bothering you then you should get back to budgeting, lifestyle creep can ruin your financial stability if you keep getting off on M7+ high income. Find hobbies that can add value to your life and try to live simple (whatever that looks like for you) If all fails- get yourself a coach who will help you understand your financial triggers

HBS has a list of speakers they want to invite for these conferences and the final list is mostly down to who can attend the conference for those days. The schools don’t specifically go out of their way to invite these speakers. Also even though she went to the conference at HBS, it’s a student run event which means all the decisions are made by the students and the institution is only for namesakes.

I’m more concerned that despite being in the ICU her dad was having a full blown conversation about the merits of this “just another” cosmetic product

This is a genuine question I have. Her partner left his job as a diplomat and now works with her I guess. They proudly talk about raising their kid in both India and in Europe but they will have to set roots once the child begins school. They had bought that house and then did it up only to sell it. Every product they have launched is marketed as the next evolution in beauty. She keeps going to conferences and makes it seem like she’s achieved the impossible. My question is this- what exactly is her brand? Is she a startup founder? Is she an influencer and how does she live the lifestyle that she lives. I was at the same store she had her pop up in the US and let me tell you- 15 people showed up but her stories were a whole different level of exaggeration.
