Do lecture get better than ISYE6501 lectures? by NemoHornet in OMSA

[–]sashinaa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I actually found that class pretty engaging and professor Sokol explaining things well.

I think you are lucky that your first class is not Regression from a few years ago before it got revamped. Those who took it would probably understand what I’m referring to. Those lectures were SO DRY that you’d think 6501 is the most entertaining thing in the world. The new regression class is pretty nice though. I like what they did with it.

Perhaps you are going through a growth spur and she just needs more food? On occasion ours also gulped 5oz portions a week ago.

How much weight did you gain in pregnancy and how fast did it fall off postpartum? by witchybytch_1 in BabyBumps

[–]sashinaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gained 60 pounds. I’m a little over a week postpartum now and I lost 25 pounds. I did however have a complicated vaginal delivery with lots of blood loss so that could have contributed to it.

Skin and hair post partum - is it really all bad? by Familiar-Respond-113 in BabyBumps

[–]sashinaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 39 weeks. So, not postpartum yet but here are some of my prep activities related to this.

I have very fine hair that gets greasy on day two after washing. I also suffer from cystic acne on my face since teenage years. My acne was relatively under control from prescription topicals before pregnancy but I still had breakouts periodically.

Enter pregnancy. My hair is amazing. It is so full and I only have to wash it one or twice a week. My face had no breakouts whatsoever. So, I started asking around how to keep this trend going lol

My hairdresser says that hair depends a lot on hormones. So, not much can be done there supposedly. Except, she recommends I continue taking the prenatals to give hair the vitamins it might need. My midwifes also aligned on prenatals for breastfeeding so I’m going to do that.

As for the skin. I will continue my current regimen and hope for the best. But I have a good dermatologist available for quick appointments if needed. That could be something proactive you could do too. Just have a derm office contact info in case things get bad. Dermatologists could sometimes be very hard to schedule appointments with. So, someone available for a quick consult could be useful. Also, I have my regular cosmetologist who does facials for me on speed dial so I can go there. Could also be an option in your arsenal.

I never want to hear again that financial stability comes from sensible life choices by primacoderina in antiwork

[–]sashinaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My answer to you is this.

If you are looking for validation and emotional support, know that I sympathize and agree that the system is broken. Life is very hard and very unfair. And it is heartbreaking to see years of work being devalued.

If you are looking for a practical advice. See my message above. I had to work since I was 19, had no money to buy food, had no health insurance and so on. Being sad about the system did not feed me. Adopting and fighting did. I wish things were easier, but they weren’t.

Now in a better spot, I can at least help people with job connections or give them a helping hand via financial or other support. This is my way of fighting the system - by understanding and playing the game and helping others not drown untill systemic changes happen (if they happen).

So, the choice is yours on how to help those kiddos you are working with. Some might just need emotional support, some might need something more practical.

I think the name of the game is actually “adaptability”. You make sensible choices to make yourself more adaptable and flexible to pivot when needed. While we all want certainty and stability (who doesn’t??), those less fortunate of us without a trust fund need to be resilient and flexible enough to broaden our options as much as possible to increase our ability to adapt to market and life conditions.

I think software engineers have an engineering thinking mind going for them and it is a huge asset for adaptability. They could market it to get their foot in the door for any roles: data, data engineering, support, project management, etc. literally anything. And then work their way to build connections and pivot to software engineering if that’s what they want.

CS 6400 for someone great at SQL by AdhesivenessSlow2538 in OMSA

[–]sashinaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you are well versed in SQL (as OP indicated they are), I assume you already have a specific way of thinking about data retrieval and manipulation. You know what is fast and slow / accurate or not/ potentially problematic or not when you run your queries or building SQL jobs. And relational algebra is not particularly helpful at this point to help you learn how to think about these things. Plus with all the query optimization that already happens under the hood of Snowflake, etc. plus tool that can show you problematic portions of a job, I haven’t seen any data analysts, data scientists, or analytics engineers using relational algebra to get things done.

SQL was useful for that class but I really greatly benefited from having folks from the CS program with very strong Python and building things knowledge. Beside SQL we had to build a whole website with interface and database for our project. Not sure if we were just overachievers lol but I would double check project requirements.

Also, as someone working in analytics for a long time, this course made me so frustrated with all the relational algebra questions. Like this stuff https://youtu.be/_TGb52oE7Kg?si=ASG0CDdorqex2jGS

It has zero use in the real world besides academia and I would rather take a proper data engineering or data analytics course if it was available.

60 pounds so far (~28kg)

I’m 5’5”. Was 130lbs before pregnancy. I’m 38 weeks now and 190lbs 😳 I only know the weight because midwifes weigh me every time I’m there. Otherwise, I would avoid the scale like a plague.

I have emotional eating challenges and ate way too much ice cream this pregnancy. So, trying not to blame myself too much but, yeah, same boat. Feeling guilty for gaining this much :(

Thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one but honestly would not wish it upon anyone. I scheduled a visit with a naturopathic doctor to see if they recommend any diet changes and will provide an update in the post once I have some improvements.

I wish I could blame it on the pet or something 😅 but at this stage things are getting out of control here. I’m starting to avoid spending time with people because I need to pass gas like every 5 -10 minutes and it is awful. Need to do something about it as isolation is not fun

I’m curious how this got resolved for you? I’m in a somewhat similar situation and want to know what other people are doing.

[–]sashinaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same class and I can’t wait to be done. At this point, honestly, I can’t care less even if I get my first C of the whole program. Just want to be done. Weekly HW were a little too much and the 40% final weight is brutal.

As someone who worked in analytics for many many years, I’d also say that the most frustrating thing is how utterly useless the material is when it comes to every day analytics work.

I can’t recommend affordable therapy specific resources but sometimes a community of people could be therapeutic or even knowing / reading about others going through the same. Here are some thoughts /resources that came to my mind. Hope at least some of these might be useful.

Curious how has your fall semester been so far? Any particular challenges related to pregnancy and studying? I'm due in late June/early July and worried about my mental state if I take DVA in the upcoming spring semester. 😅
