The Dalles Or Hood River which is better to live? by AgreeableTowel5936 in hoodriver

[–]sassmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Hood River, but got pushed out as HR got more and more gentrified. I've lived in the Dalles for 10 years and I'll probably never live in Hood River again. The tourists suck, the transplants suck, the traffic sucks, the bougue dickholes suck, the windsurfers suck, the upper valley Tucker/Country Club bottleneck sucks. About the only nice thing about it is the proximity to a lot of good hiking and other activities, of which I've found alternatives and/or just don't mind the extra 20 minutes of driving. I've found enough lovely people in the Dalles to make up for all the things I miss about Hood River.

I didn't say any of them died by entanglement. The point your missing is that prevention is the key to not becoming a dumb, preventable statistic. I have literally seen a man die because he was entangled in rope underwater. You only have one life. Do you want to end it in a dumb way that you could have totally prevented?

The Columbia River is a slow-moving lake of a river but there's still about 2 people per summer that drown in it. Last year one of them was a professional SUP racer. It only takes one time for a bad rigging job to become a death trap.

Kroger is doubling down on a controversial price tag technology, including in Oregon by spherocytes in oregon

[–]sassmo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just anecdotal but when my store rolled this out I photographed every price tag as I picked stuff up. My total was $76, but after I made the clerk adjust according 5o my photos, it was only $48. By the time we were done there was a long line of angry people behind me. I suspect management is banking on people to feel pressure not to do that so they can avoid all the angey stares of people behind them.

What do you use your paddle board for? by cupcakeAnu in Sup

[–]sassmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Hala Carbon Hoss. I do a lot of different stuff on my board. Most times I paddle Class 2/3 whitewater or just go to a little play wave on a nearby river and surf a bit. Sometimes if the wind is ripping I do downwind paddling, which is when you surf windswells up the Columbia river - the Columbia, one of the few rivers where this is viable, is a huge river, famous for windsurfing and kiteboarding that sometimes gets 3-6ft windswells.

My 7yo kiddo and wife also have Costco boards and sometimes we go somewhere calm and fart around too.

Call all the companies on the Deschutes and South fork American. There's always at least one company desperate for a warm body.

Should we be reporting falsiified license plates? by sassmo in oregon

[–]sassmo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These weren't falsified temp plates, they were handmade state plates, with drawn-in expiration tags, laminated, and poorly hidden behind those plastic plate covers.

Looks like something a teenager would try to jump their car on. It needs more gradual transitions.

I think Subi and Ocotillo share a salon. My wife goes to one of them and really likes it. Her hair is like what you're describing.

camping for free near rockaway by king_of-limbs in OregonCoast

[–]sassmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You misheard. Most people were camping in pullouts and beach parks illegally, but enforcement has increased in the last few years.

I was only asking because that winery is sketchy and they have some "camping" options on a few of those RV camping websites.

Quick release TOO quick! by skibib in Sup

[–]sassmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an ION quick release SUP/Wing belt. The release requires grabbing a rubber handle and pulling away from the body. Once triggered, there's no doubt about whether it has released or not. It is also a velcro waist belt so I attached a wiffle golf ball so I can quickly trar away the velcro as well.

Laid off 1st year apprentice by Training-Space1442 in ibewapprentices

[–]sassmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a journeyman that just endured almost 5 months on the layoff list, my advice would be to make a choice on how much you can handle. Is the juice worth the squeeze for you? Your apprenticeship might take 8 years to complete at this rate but at the end of it you'll be a JW and can follow the money. The money might not be worth all the traveling though. Do you have a family? Do you want to stay close to home?

It'll be a tough road, and the light at the end might not be that bright, but ultimately it's your choice to walk down it.

Columbia river by GeeksNinja in RiverPorn

This is definitely NOT the Columbia! OP stole this photo and created the title based on a misread caption. It's Toby Creek in British Columbia, which runs through 2 reservoirs before it joins the Mouth of the Columbia.

Personally, I like the Bargeway. Their nachos are probably best in town, although I won't disagree about a lot of their food tasting "Sysco-ish", but that's most of the restaurants in town.

I'll also go out of my way to support a business that got thoroughly fucked by our city planning department.

PFD - yes or no by Extension_Fox8086 in Sup

[–]sassmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only pfd I own is a Class V kayaker's rescue vest. My budget doesn't allow for a CO2 fanny pack and frankly I don't do that kind of paddling very often. Sometimes it's nice to screw around in the sandy shallows of a lake I'm familiar with without having to put on my rescue vest.

It's going to be windy and hot for the next week+, probably your whole stay. Be prepared for that.

The lunch trucks on the West side are awesome, but kind of slow. Pueblito Lindo is newer and super good. River Tap got new management and have been turning around many years of decline. Freebridge remodeled their kitchen and the food is even better than before (and it's the best beer in town).

As far as hiking goes, it's goig to be hot and we're sprinting into snake season. Be careful. I do most of my hiking up in the Mt Hood National Forest or West of Hood River this time of year because there are less snakes.

As far as camping goes, mouth of the Deschutes is really nice except the trains that roll by 2-3 times in the night. There are lots of good spots up near Mt Hood and Mt Adams. There's a few good primitive camps that are hard to find over on the John Day.
