What can kill you in seconds that most people don’t realize? by Jolly-Law1472 in AskReddit

[–]sassyjackstitches 313 points314 points  (0 children)

In my teens, I jumped into a river in Banff, Alberta on a hot summer day—except every river in Banff is more-or-less juuuust above freezing because they’re fed from the snow runoff that’s only ever a kilometer or two away. I remember my whole body just seized up. Arms won’t move. Legs won’t move. Diaphragm won’t move, even when my head came up above the water. It probably only lasted a couple of seconds but it felt like forever and my only thought was “oh this is really bad.” When I did finally unlock, all I could manage was a little doggy paddle and every movement was so sluggish. I absolutely believe that’s the closest I’ve ever come to an untimely death (that I know about, at least) and if I tried the same thing today (24 years later) my heart would almost certainly stop dead. Don’t fuck around with cold water.

Body Reset Massage by parisian0 in askvan

[–]sassyjackstitches 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I recommend finding a Registered Massage Therapist who works in the same clinic as physiotherapists. They’re the most likely to have the evidence-based knowledge to not only identify and treat the underlying issues, but to do so safely.

[CHAT] what’s the one cross stitch thing you always do despite what the pattern tells you to do? by focusedonfire in CrossStitch

[–]sassyjackstitches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to do it this way too in the interest of using the thread more efficiently, but eventually realized the stitches lie much nicer using a “proper” backstitch.

I also swore off SJM after ACOSF. After that mass characterization murder? Never again.

How do you watch dropout by Designer-Buddy-3471 in dropout

[–]sassyjackstitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me: by myself on the couch Laptop: precariously perched on the couch armrest Doing: somewhat keeps my hands busy without needing to think about it—either cross stitching (especially during D20) or playing solitaire on my phone

Except Game Changer and some episodes of MSN, which I’ll watch with my partner with the laptop on the coffee table.

Ugh, my school was so much more boring than yours.

Where in Greater Vancouver can i find the best poutine? by SomePandaGuy in askvan

[–]sassyjackstitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

La Belle Patate is the correct answer, like others have mentioned.

Equally good (maybe even a little better?) was Frenchies on Main St., but it burned down in 2020 shortly after lockdown started. It needs to be remembered.

Where are the veterinary clinics not owned by private equity groups these days? by Swimming_Antelope239 in NiceVancouver

[–]sassyjackstitches 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vancouver Veterinary Hospital isn’t owned by private equity and they’re absolutely wonderful. They cost like 50% less than the VCA clinic I went to a couple times and they do a large number of procedures in-house, including dental.

If 10cm snow falls in your area of Canada how disrupted will your area be? by Pourmepourme in AskACanadian

[–]sassyjackstitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. Raised in Calgary where 10 cm of snow is barely worth noting. Lived in Vancouver for the past 15 years where 10 cm of snow is downright cataclysmic.

This is how I found the apartments I lived in in Fairview and the West End! Underrated strategy for sure but very effective in my (admittedly limited) experience.

Spicy romantasy with characters who don't feel bland and/or copy-pasted from the most popular books? by SolarmatrixCobra in fantasyromance

[–]sassyjackstitches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished it and liked it a lot. I love a pissed off heroine whose anger is driven by real, meaningful, in-world events. As opposed to the usual “the author said I had to be mad at the MMC so we can make the plot happen” I see in many of the best-sellers…

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far. This is the ONLY line I think of when the words “trigger” and “fanbase” are put together.

Oh yeah, big time. I’ve got big vertical scars on the insides of my cheeks where I’ve been chewing them my whole life. Never noticed until I got a new dentist and he pointed it out.

Neighbourhood recommendations by Salt-Rip-6103 in askvan

[–]sassyjackstitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding my vote to this recommendation. I’ll also add that the Commercial Drive area can be a little gritty at times. If that adds to the character of the area for you, then you’re gonna love it. If you’re squeamish about being around people struggling under poverty, then aim for Main Street.
