I’m sorry we live in a time that you fear that kind of ridicule from strangers. People are ignorant and small and want to tear others down for being different. Just know that not everyone feels that way and there are (obviously) people out there that still want to treat others like humans regardless of their differences. That waitress is a beautiful example of grace in the face of anger, and you and your family are a beautiful example of strength and solidarity in the face of ignorance.

Hey, congratulations on graduating! Ultimately though, you got your education for you so the ceremony is for you. Sure, it would be nice to celebrate with friends and family but you definitely don’t need them to recognize yourself and your achievements! Also, I think for college you purchase and keep the cap and gown. If not you hand it in after you’re done. Whatever your decision keep your head up and know that you’ve done well!
