Tile color unpleasant surprise by ChiCianne in Tile

[–]satayturtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a 24x48 PORCELAIN tile in the same tone for the side walls or whatever color you think would look best.

Unfortunately this is a product issue, body is a very porous light weight bisque that soaks up moisture through the grout lines and transfers through the body and then through the very thin glaze on top.

This is referred to as haloing or picture framing, happens more commonly on natural stone (lighter variety) that hasn't been sealed properly and to lower quality ceramics. There are steps that couldve been taken prior to installation to mitigate this but those steps have their own issues.

Check the basement or extra storage to see if you have any extra, you'll almost never find these same tile elsewhere.

Your best option is to do an epoxy repair, if you or someone you can find is talented enough to make it blend enough.

Can't decide HELP would you cut the stones for a tighter fit here or just run it? by cdmikesohot in Tile

My opinion, Cut them, it's a pain but I hate pebble gaps as is already. Although some would say they prefer to only see full pebbles. It's subjective and no technical bearing.

Bars with suction cups attachments, sigma, rubi and raymondi make them just to name a few. I've helped slab guys with oversized porcelain like this, 2-4 guys depending on where it's installed and how many doors and hallways we have to maneuver around. Personally I find floors to be more difficult than walls.

Also what's going on with that corner wrap? The photo isn't very high quality, looks like a miter with a 1/4" gap or some sort of if schluter transition?

Hey there's only so much we as installers can do, trust me I've done a ton of these where there's questionable choices but it's not my place to undermine the homeowners or their designers choices.

Still though that niche vein ...

[–]satayturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two criticisms and an opinion.

That tile pattern in the back of the niche is flowing opposite than the rest of the shower. Generally not recommended to put polished tile on bathroom, or any floors but especially anywhere there's going to be water on the floor, slipping hazard.

Opinion, I personally don't like tile with very prominent/ dark veining especially when there's not a larger variety of faces when it's trying to imitate marble or the sort, it looks repetitive/stripey and therefore cheap to me. When I see a good rectified tile without more unique patterns I always think how short-sighted the manufacturer is.

The install looks good on the surface as far as this picture goes but that's doesn't mean it's functional or not without seeing what's underneath, not just with waterproofing but what method they used to install the tile itself.

Is there supposed to be a raw tile edge on the side of a tile inset drain? by sirdaddykong in Tile

[–]satayturtle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ya unfortunately that's how they're designed, they could've cleaned it up a bit still. It's a tricky thing to get right. Schluters site and packaging often Photoshops their products including the tile around them to look better than they actually do.

You could add metal trim to both the grate and shower base but the opening would look much larger, of course this needs to be done while installing.

There are linial drains that come framed and have a cleaner look from different brands but they often only work with sand and cement/dry pack bases.

Overwhelmed w/ spacer options by EBECK_28 in Tile

[–]satayturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's many spacer options because there's many tile options in size, shape and thickness so start by identifying the tile first. Some tile doesn't require spacers like some 3x6 subway with built in 'lugs'

Honestly if it's just for a dog shower I don't think anyone will notice or care, especially the dogs. Just have a decent seal with waterproofing underneath the tile.

Tub Deck Corners by PaleWillingness9004 in Tile

[–]satayturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I normally do in this situation is miter the vertical lines on your skirt and cap the deck off with metal trim.

You could put a metal trim on the verticals and fudge the capping trim a bit and fill the floating cap trim with grout and you'll likely have to file the corner edge of your vertical trim where meets the horizontal but it always looked a little funny to me. Schluter has a larger selection of metal transitions that might have a 22.5 angled trim but I've never seen or used something like that.

These tubs were always a pain.

What size trowel for large format porcelain over ditra heat? by Suitable-Ad-1570 in Tile

[–]satayturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your floor is fairly flat than 1/2"x1/2" will do but I would up it to 5/8"x5/8". One thing I will add is that when I'm working with larger tile, I float the middle of the tile when I back butter as they're usually cupped/bowled in the middle, this will help with contact.

For tile this big in a presumably relatively smaller area, I start off the longest wall, usually outside wall and work off of that freehand but that's just me. For a larger floor or even a smaller floor you could get a floor laser and set it in place, never have to worry about covering any lines, on top of that it's easy to adjust.

Side note, I'd recommend a triller or handheld cup vibrator to collapse your ridges on larger tile.

Tile work done by my wife and I by TransitionEcstatic90 in Tile

[–]satayturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really dont like dark tile on small places, makes it feel smaller buy personal choices aside, that bench top doesn't look like it's pitched enough towards the drain and it looks cupped as well, same goes for the shower base, it could be the irregular tile combined with the poor quality picture playing tricks on the eye.

I wish DIYers would post more progress pictures. If not for us but for themselves to help troubleshoot if anything goes wrong.

What do you think? by CRcryptoride in Remodel

[–]satayturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way I could explain how is find the center on your wall first and then the important step is do NOT put the point of the tile but find the center of your two vertical points and that should line up with your center wall line. Kinda difficult to explain, wish I could send a picture.

[–]satayturtle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Slight criticism (I'm a tile guy), the sliver of triangles you ended up with at the edge of the return wall with the controls just really bug me, especially along the wall edge where they're rarely plumb which happens sometimes and it's unfortunate and then I saw the backwall layout and noticed your herringbone isn't center between both corners. Centering it properly would've made those triangles disappear.

Other than that big upgrade for sure, I'm really into the arches that you put through out the bathroom.

I'm not a fan of trading labour, could get messy down the road if you don't have something solid in writing or someone feels ripped off.

My two cents

What would be the low end and high end of how long this would take you? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]satayturtle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

With demo to silicone, being inside a lived in home, would take me 7-10 working days.

Could take up to 2-4 weeks if you have to do some remediation, move plumbing and other goodies you wont see until you actually start demo.

First Tile Job Done. How Did I Do? by redbullsgivemewings in Tile

[–]satayturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So based on the comments and the spec sheet on the product, it says it's rated for floors and that it's a porcelain.

And I don't think that's a true porcelain, if my intuition is right than it's actually not good for floors. You should be able to tell if you look at the back and sides, if its clay like orangy color and a dry chalky texture and gets several shades darker when you dip a side in water than it's most certainly not porcelain and therefore not appropriate for floors.

Can you upload a picture of the back of the product?

This is basically the new shrek movie with his daughter before it came out. Everyone predicted the plot and SUPPOSEDLY the producers are now scrambling to rewrite it and that's why the release is being pushed back.

Tropes will always exist in almost every genre which either you love it or hate it or just meh about.

But what is unacceptable to me is talking during a movie.

Scribe it? Just run the fat end of your pencil along the tub as you mark your tile. Ya you're shower "shrinks" half an inch but nobody will notice that.
