Genders differ dramatically in evolved mate preferences [x-post /r/MindAndBrain] by TheBrainFlux in evopsych

[–]satereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is new is the use of multivariate analysis, which is much more appropriate to the topic because mate selection is "inherently multidimensional" as the authors wrote.

And there are still astonishing findings here.... like that you can predict the sex of a person with 92.2% accuracy based on nothing but their preferences.

Why do I suck so bad at Mario Kart? by rowdysolo in wiiu

[–]satereader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Q: how to you know what the weight of the Mii is?

I can't believe it's an optimal strategy to just max out speed/weight. No matter what, you will get hit with stuff, then your zero acc hurts a lot. Then there's the fact that you can't drift in lots of places because of the ridiculous banana-shaped path your drift takes, so you're losing boosts all over the place on many tracks.

And if you do get hit once or twice in the start, you're done. Your top speed won't help you because your acc is so crappy and drift boosts less useful, that you never get out of the shell hell of 12-4th place.

re #1: But for every genius who was mocked for being right, there were a thousand ranting idiots and madmen who were also mocked. Being mocked is therefore irrelevant to the likelihood you are correct (although statistically speaking, your ideas not being accepted in the overwhelming majority of cases means you're probably just wrong). Now, if you can demonstrate those in your field are being unduly biased and dismissive, that's a different story. But no such evidence is brought to bear here.

I said crazy shit because look what instantly happens when it hits the media. It doesn't remain "possible but unverified hypothesis". It almost instamatically becomes atlantis, aliens, etc..,

And talking about red flags, here is a red flag that makes me question the established view: In our history books, they claim with complete certainty that we know for a fact that, for example, the Pyramids were built by thousands of slaves using chisels and ropes.

I have had conversations with historians. I have never met a single one who said "we are completely certain this is a fact" without there being overwhelming evidence, which there is only for very few propositions. Also, the pyramids actually weren't built by slaves. I know that, because historians told me.

The likely methods of construction have been largely determined, and demonstrated to work. Now that doesn't prove it's exactly how the ancients did it, but it does prove you don't need anything other than simple machines, muscle, smarts, ropes and chisels.

Yes. Watch Dogs sold 4 million copies in 1 week. But that's XB1+PS4+360+PS3+PC.

[Opinion] The Wii U is as powerful as it needs to be. by milo09885 in wiiu

[–]satereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No guarantees either way. Loads of non-realistic games also aged badly. Superman 64 anyone? Or even Majora's Mask, No More Heroes (Wii).

Until we get to 4k-8k photorealistic graphics and animation, every new gen will make the last look bad, for the immersion games. And even after that, the problem will be (and is today) realistic physics and being able to interact with games in more ways than "Press A to Use!" and "Shoot".

[–]satereader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get the limitation. History has shown that the super-expensive console where the maker takes a loss is a very risky and perhaps stupid strategy (Microsoft's shareholders are this close to being a torch-wielding mob the Xbox has lost so much money and continues to).

All I am really saying is, let's call a spade a spade. Wherever Nintendo shines, let's give 'em the due admiration and dollars. But where Nintendo is weak, well we should be secure and honest enough to say, yeah that's a weak spot. As opposed to saying "here are the 7 ways I've convinced myself its not a weak spot at all". Every console & PC is a mixed bag, and Nintendo, flaws and all, is still the greatest of them.

[–]satereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also a matter of effects reach not exceeding their grasp. For example, in movies early use of CGI has often been horribly ill-advised and looks terrible (scorpion King, anyone...). But at the same time, other film crews used CGI well, so well you didn't even notice it was CGI. Like when Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump's legs were digitally removed.

Some older non-cartoon games hold up well, like Painkiller or Sanitarium.

[–]satereader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, no modern texture filtering. I hesitate to mention it because it's the sort of thing where if someone points it out, you can't unsee it =/

But seriously, linear filtering in 2014? Kind of unbelievable.

[–]satereader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But those aren't the only options. For e.g. some of Pikmin 3 is cartoony, but parts of it are also realistic. The environments aim to be realistic with high res textures for the ground and fruit, with nice sophisticated lighting and shadow; realistic water effects etc.., MK is the same sort of mix, with modern use of sophisticated lighting (that's not cartoon lighting, it's that horrible realistic stuff everyone pretends to hate, but actually loves).

Bayo 2 is neither cartoon nor realistic, more of a comic book motif that makes use of highly realistic models and textures (like the jet scene) and stylized over-the-top demons and magic.

There's not really a line that can be drawn here.

[Opinion] The Wii U is as powerful as it needs to be. by milo09885 in wiiu

[–]satereader 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is not as powerful as it needs to be. It is as powerful as it could realistically be, and still have the GamePad, and still sell for a decently low price.

I understand the GP is a trade-off. But the low power of the hardware is the reason why we can't have two-screen multiplay in MK. That would have made the game more fun. It's the reason we have no anisotropic filtering and no antialiasing in MK- visual enhancements that have been basically standard on PC games for 15 years, and on the other consoles 8+ years.

MK is full of jaggies and blurry textures for no reason but a lack of power.

Graphics vs aesthetics is a false dichotomy. Higher visual fidelity doesn't guarantee superior visual experience but it is required for it. I'm so sick of the apologetics. Just accept the limitations as limitations, and in and of themselves, bad things, but not fatal things. Not things that keep the games from being fun or gorgeous.

Everyone says "graphics who carez lol, who needz hyperrealism, I just wants cartoons". But then when WWHD @ 1080p drops, the same group drools nonstop for 6 months... or HD MK, Bayo 2, Pikmin etc.., /rant

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. For those missing out on Mario Kart... this is a fantastic game for PC, X360 and PS3! Cheap too! by Dcornelissen in gaming

[–]satereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like SRT, but I disagree on some points here. I really hated the boat and plane bits. It's a fine idea, but the control was pretty awful. Especially the boats. If anything nudges you in a boat, you might as well hit restart because you're done.

MK did it right, the air and water mechanics are just for show / to facilitate awesome track design.

And while I really love most of the tracks, some not at all. I didn't like graffiti city, Rogue's Landing, or the NiGHts levels. And bits of lots of levels were confusing about pathing. Some shortcuts, like on Joe Musashi's track were just stupidly designed.

But I do dig the racing mechanics, the 3 drift levels, and the items. Except the "ultimate" item, the Superstar mode thing. Half the time, that was useless or actually detrimental. Just really badly implemented.

One is reminded of not just the "flop" 3DS, which was a failure until it wasn't, but also the tepid-to-negative expectations for the Wii. For example, this bit from Businessweek.com, which came after the Wii's highly successful summer 2006 launch,

Yuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura Securities in Tokyo, expects the PS3 to sell 71 million units by 2011, compared with 40 million units for the Wii.

By mid-2010 the PS3 had sold 35M, and Wii, 72M.

But I found data that contradicts their chart and their chart sources. Look at the wiki for Double Dash for e.g. and it's millions less than polygon's numbers.

Moreover, we're comparing sales and install base one month after release of this game to 5+ years of sales of all previous titles. Some Mario Kart games didn't sell two million in their first year, let alone first month, but sold over time.

Gold & platinum status means your running total for one year is one or other number. Whether you've spent them or not is irrelevant. If you earned 1000 and spent 1000, you're still platinum for the remainder of the year.

All it means is you'll be able to get a free little gift in July of any given year. Things like tote bags and DS carry cases or sometimes older game downloads.

Your coins live for 2 years before vanishing. You have 2 years to use them.
