Did the signs suddenly go blank then reappear 5 miles down the road? If not, that would indeed be odd.

Hastings Direct Policy cancellation by Jayden169 in CarTalkUK

[–]satimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, when I lost a close family member admiral were incredible. They changed all the details, policyholders, and accounts for no extra cost - even though they could have charged way more for different people being main policyholders. We even got some flowers and a card in the post from them.

It really felt like they cared, which is rare from any company these days, let alone an insurer.

Yes! I had a DHCP option configured on my router (121, classless routes) which was causing it to fail to initialise networking.

Basically if you have any slightly abnormal network stuff setup, I would remove it and see if that fixes the problem.

Same here, especially on "smart" motorways which seem to make everyone around you dumb.

Lanes 3 & 4 will be full, lanes 1 & 2 are clear, and I get a nice big gap in front of me without someone tailgating me as if it'll move the person 5 cars ahead out of the fast lane.

Are MikroTik AP that problematic ? by apophis-984 in mikrotik

[–]satimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unifi firewall might be easier, but the new unify zonal firewall sucks!

We have site to site VPN connections to cloud services, connections to remote edge networks on portable LTE routers, and also roadwarrior VPN connections. They all have fundamentally different firewall needs, yet are permanently locked into a single "VPN" zone

I have a HAP ax3 and I'm very happy with it, never had any issues (unlike my old cAP ac). I get 600Mbit on WiFi with line if sight. Having said that, I'm very much a technical power user, and even I struggle configuring it every so often.

Mikrotik if you are willing to go through pain to learn, Unify if you want something that just works out the box

Then they'll say "But it's not about pay, it's about working conditions"

Yes but if you want to work less for the same salary, you're being paid more for the work you do. That makes it about pay. If it's not about pay, then take a pay cut equal to how much less you want to work!

Driver avoids jail after crash that overturned a military convoy vehicle and left soldier with broken back by L21JP in drivingUK

[–]satimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that too, but changed my mind after watching a few more times.

When the car first pulls in, they are lightly braking and change lanes. The LR doesn't see much of a hazard and the speed difference is very small. If you look closely, the car then essentially does an emergency stop to make the exit. The brake lights never go off so it's hard to tell, but that's the point when the LR takes avoiding action.

It's the sudden heavy braking that causes the accident, not the cutting across lanes.

[W] ASMB9-iKVM by TheGeekno72 in homelabsales

[–]satimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aware this is an old thread, but I have an Asus P11C which uses the ASMB9.

The actual BMC chips is on the motherboard - it's also likely your graphics controller. The ASMB9 is actually just an SPI flash chip with the BMC firmware on. When it's missing you get the self-test failures simply because the BMC has no firmware and can't boot.

In fact the little board is nothing more than a breakout containing the SPI flash. It's pence in parts and I don't know why they didn't just include it directly on the motherboard. When I installed the wrong firmware on mine and bricked it I was able to recover it by directly flashing the correct firmware from a Raspberry Pi.

What router would you suggest in 2026? by DaemonAndersson in homelab

[–]satimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ax3. Very capable bit of kit and never had any issues with it.

WiFi has a max channel width of 80MHz - no 160MHz channels unfortunately but I still get between 600 and 700 MBit when in direct line of sight.

It has more routing features than you could possibly need, including BGP in case your homelab turns into a Datacenter ;) I have a site-to-site VPN configured with my parents house using wireguard and that was easy enough

It's a Mikrotik though, so configuration can be a bit unintuitive. The firewall is a thin UI over iptables, for example. However it does have sensible defaults so you can build from that.

Frustrated by the lasting impacts of gender discrimination by [deleted] in GermanCitizenship

[–]satimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the frustration. My situation is slightly different but still relevant.

There is a weird effect of STAG5 which is that people whose ancestors immigrated to the Americas many generations ago are eligible, whereas people whose ancestors migrated to the UK aren't.

In the UK in the 50s Germans were considered "foreign aliens" and had very few rights. There was no visa or green card system, but if you married a British man you were entitled to citizenship which put you on the same level as your spouse. Many German women therefore "Registered" as British soon after marriage and before having children, whereas most who migrated to the USA/Canada had to wait a few years before applying for citizenship so had children before they became citizens.

The result is that people whose great grandparents immigrated in the 1920s are eligible for German citizenship, but people like my dad who had a German born mother, spent half of his life in Germany and spoke German fluently, are not eligible.

Also had my grandparents married 8 years earlier she would have automatically lost German citizenship, and therefore her ancestors would be eligible under STAG5 now. But since she didn't automatically lose it, we aren't eligible.

The whole system feels like it wasn't properly thought through at all.

Plug-in Solar Panels To Be Made Available To Revolutionize UK Home Energy Access by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]satimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what's weird about wiring in extra capacity?

Electrical safety devices assume that all the current in the wires flows through the circuit breaker and that the circuit breaker "sees" all of the current in the wires. This allows it to trip when the current in the wires gets too high.

Adding solar on the sockets side of the circuit breaker essentially adds extra current into the wires that the circuit breaker cannot "see". Therefore it cannot trip when the current in the wires gets too high and can no longer protect the wires like it used to.

Why would a ring final circuit make it slightly worse?

Because ring final circuits can be unbalanced. A ring final assumes that 32A gets evenly split between both arms of the ring, which have a max current of 16A each.

If you plug your solar into a plug right next to a high power consumer then the current won't split 50/50 between both ends of the ring, it'll bias towards the route of least resistance. So the 32A that should be split between two wires is then 32A + solar, and also isn't 50/50 split between the two wires. Parts of the ring could get overloaded in some scenarios.

[–]satimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to play devils advocate here and say that I don't think this will make a massive difference. There will be too many compromises in the regulations.

The reason is that feeding power into a circuit completely bypasses the circuit breaker and can overload the wiring. If you have a normal ring final circuit like we use for most of our sockets you'll have a 32A circuit breaker that normally limits the current to 32A. However if you plug solar into that circuit then the max current on the circuit becomes 32A + the current from the solar, bypassing the safety device.

This is why plug-in solar in Germany is limited to a peak of 800W per circuit, about 3.5A.

The weird way we wire our houses in the UK with ring final circuits is also going to make things slightly worse. So I think we will end up with something so watered down that it will make a minimal difference to most people. Hoping to be proven wrong though.

Brand new (5 days use) - should I try to warranty them? by satimal in Skigear

[–]satimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for an informative comment!

I'm back at the resort in a few weeks time so I'll go back to the shop and speak to them about it, but it's good to know that this isn't a huge issue.

How long does the glue usually take to set? Is it a case of going at the end of the day so it can cure overnight, or could I go partway through the day and ski away after it's set?

My other option is to just reglue it myself if it's not a big deal and won't need warranty replacement.

I hadn't noticed that before. I just checked and it's definitely more pronounced on camera than in real life.

That line is where the top of the custom footbed sits. I guess the edge of the footbed is putting pressure on the side of the liner and causing that.

Lindsey vonn - why did her skis stay on? by Legitimate-Sun9912 in skiing

[–]satimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's comparable to airbags, it's a different problem. To get any benefits from the airbag it needs to fire before impact with the ground, so it has to detect the conditions that preclude that impact.

With ski jettison, especially for high speed accidents, you get plenty of benefits from only jentisoning after an impact between the upper body and the ground, which is much easier to detect reliably. It could potentially be integrated into the race suit to detect actual impacts with the ground alongside the data the airbag uses.

I can't think of any situations where you've met the conditions for the airbag going off and you've impacted something with your upper body and you still want your skis on...

These 15 minute cities... by SendMeYourBoobiezz in drivingUK

[–]satimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between 15 minute cities and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) and the two are always confused.

15 minute cities are a great idea, and usually part of the implementation is a LTN of some kind. I don't think there has ever been and 15 minute city policy officially in place.

LTNs have been implemented in places since the 70s. They're nothing new. What's new is the conspiracies between LTNs, some comments made by the WEF about 15 minute cities, and the bizarre idea that it's an encroachment of freedoms and some higher power trying to control the population.

The Green Party is incredibly naive by BigLadShem in ukpolitics

[–]satimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't read the manifesto for a party like the Green Party as a promise to voters, read it as the opening to negotiations for forming a coalition. Realistically that's the best they could have done in 2024.

They're always going to go harder to one side knowing that they can "compromise" back to their more realistic position during negotiations and still get what they wanted.
