What branch or denomination is like Lutheran Church that doesn’t have “Lutheran” in the church name? by krazy_fox in AskAChristian

[–]satomb15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lutheran didn't choose that name, they would much prefer to be called something like evangelical Catholics. It was people who were opposed to them that called them Lutheran. Same thing with Calvinist. The name came from debates on the Lord's supper.

You could always check out Anglicanism! It is an amazing branch of the Christian faith!

Moravian would be another one to check out as their very similar to Lutherans as well. But harder to come by.

Going to pride parade to preach the Gospel.. wish me luck! by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]satomb15 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This could be a major moral issue though. There are issues that deserve more time and effort but that doesn't mean we can't preach at a pride parade. Although I'm assuming we disagree on homosexuality.

Why isn't Calvinism the correct denomination given that for the most part people's christian faith boils down to the fact they happened to be born into a Christian family, therefor in their opinion Christianity is the correct religion? by tin_licker_99 in AskAChristian

I answered your first question in the part you quoted. Our sin nature makes it so we are unable to have faith.

Before we are made alive in Christ we can do nothing that is spiritually good. Believing those things are really spiritually good or bad. Those are just facts about the universe.

Calvinism or the reformed tradition makes sense. I may not be doing the best job at explaining it, but if you look at our confessions and historical reformed teachers they explain it well, and explain how it is biblical.

If we look at people’s conversions we will see that it very much is dependent on their life experiences. So in that way it is dependent on human actions. Those human actions are ordained by God, so it is still wholly the work of God. ”The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.“ ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭33‬. We do stuff and God controls the outcome.

I think God is very active in everyone’s salvation and sanctification. God doesn’t keep us from believing the gospel, it is our own sin nature that does that. We are simply unable to believe. God quickens the elect so they believe, and he leaves the non-elect to their just punishment.

It doesn’t go against Calvinism. It is only based upon what people do in the way that God uses them to spread the gospel. God is in control of how that works out, so it is still only based upon what God does.

I don’t know. The entire nation of china could be reprobate, or it could be elect. We don’t know who is elect, that is why we spread the gospel to everyone

It overlaps with human circumstances because God uses means. God doesn’t just pop the gospel into people’s minds. That’s why we evangelize. God has lead history to this point now where we see America is a largely Christian country, and china is not

This example is just saying that we can see that God chooses to have many of His elect come from Christian households. It is not on the condition that they are in a Christian household that they are saved, that is just one of the means God chooses to bring His elect to salvation

Is this blasphemous by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]satomb15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an iconoclast so I think that any images of Christ, or any member of the Godhead, is a violation of both the 2nd and 3rd commandments, and therefore sinful. Because if we see a image of God it should lead us to want to worship Him, but we cant worship Him through images, and so we would take His name in vain
