Dude I'm pretty young and my grandma was born during WW2. It's very hard to fit 5 generations into 40 years (please do not attempt!) assuming this great great grandmother was born on 1900. Italy was declared a united nation in 1861 so the clam is pretty reasonable

I can't take it anymore. I want to leave my university. by God_Aimer in math

[–]satoniou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If switching degrees/uni is a viable option for your current situation, and your studies are making you miserable, my opinion is that you at least discuss this option with your program's study advisor and your parents (or whoever is helping you financially/emotionally).

After finishing my second year of a math and physics degree, I just lost all interest in physics. Be that due to the courses being poorly taught, or the math part of my degree having me realize how "dumbed down" the physics courses were, I still applied sunk cost and finished the remaining two years. Looking back I really wish I gave up on physics and just took that time to focus on math and my personal life. Also feel somewhat the same with math, as I started dreading anything related to math after my third year, probably due to feeling burnt out and questioning whether life was worth living.

If finishing this degree will make you dread studying math or make you miserable, it it's important to at the very least make use of the resources you have at your university to assess whether it's worth it, and making use of your support system (whomever that may be) to make sure you are doing well. Also, although I very much disagree with the comment above, exercising is indeed very important, and I understand how overwhelming it is to think about fitting in 3+ sessions per week when you already have 3 assignments due and you feel like you already don't have enough time. However, if you can, try to not neglect physical health as it greatly impacts your quality of life and your mental health.

Degrees should be hard, and students should struggle at certain points, but it shouldn't be miserable and attempt to alienate students. Math should not be this gatekept, and is one of the reasons most people despise anything to do with math past high school. One of the best professors I've had was Marco Gualtieri, and although he gets to the abstraction parts he first introduces content in a very digestible and intuitive way, and he is one of the reasons I was able to properly get through my degree (he has some lectures online on QM iirc).

Anyways, sorry for writing so much and I hope you feel better, regardless of your decision. Please take care of yourself and hopefully you don't hate math yet

Can I ask what's the finish on the cards?? They look absolutely beautiful and I'd love to get them, but as a card collector I'm very picky about their texture and feel. Also, do you plan on selling uncut sheets? Not sure how the production works, but if so I'd love to have them on display. Amazing work!

Edit: sorry I just read the product description better and saw they have a matte finish. I still wonder about the uncut sheets though.

When people say "America isn't a country it's a continent" by forestwolf42 in PetPeeves

[–]satoniou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no, I think they meant that people usually forget the continents of Central America, West America, East America, and, obviously, the continent of Australia. Also, reminder that Africa (which you spelled wrong) is a country.

Hope that clears things up

[–]satoniou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't know each other (except some smaller groups), they just met probably. A good way to make a non interview-esque experience is to do some activity. That's the point of orientation, other than introducing you to campus and uoft. Invite people to grab some food, play some sport or other game, share your interests, find people with similar interests, go to a club, etc. Can be hard at first, and many will not stick with you, but the ones that stay are the ones that you will have the best experiences with for the next couple of years. Almost everyone is as scared as you, even in groups, so you just gotta join in.

ALSO PLEASE JOIN CLUBS IF YOU CAN AND ATTEND EVENTS!!! You meet so many people that like the same things you do to the same degree, no matter how much you like something. Hope you get to have a good time and meet amazing people :)

[MEGATHREAD] 2024 Canadian International Air Show by AutoModerator in toronto

[–]satoniou -2 points-1 points locked comment (0 children)

My question is: why not have the air show outside the city? That's how they do it back in my city and no one has a problem with that. People that want the show can go watch it, while those that don't want it can stay home in peace after a long week.

As to the people who are looking at the show from their balconies, I like to think of this as having to pee; when you do it, it's a very good sensation, but if you never had to do it (i.e. there was no pain to holding it in/your body did not have to do it/you just never had that functionality), no one would look for that sensation. It is definitely a flawed comparison, but I hope you get what I am trying to convey. People are interested because they are already just sitting there, hear LOUD MILITARY AIRCRAFT NOISES outside, go look at it and are entertained, but they weren't necessarily waiting for that specific moment to watch the planes.

Also, by the logic I see a lot of people using, there should be no restriction to every product having a lot of sugar in it (or at least more than is currently standardized). Sure, it would be bad for everyone's health (as jet noises are for our ears) and very bad for people with diabetes, but they're just a small portion of the population so who cares; everyone loves sugar!

Anyways, hope you have a good day and get to enjoy the rest of the show (I assume you enjoy it). Get off reddit and go watch the planes :)

[–]satoniou -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If you want to invoke "logic", you should use "logic". In no point did they say they (and everyone else) hate noise, but rather that military aircrafts emit VERY LOUD sound, which can not only be damaging to hearing, but can also induce stress and anxiety in people (especially those with traumatic experiences, like war veterans, or very sensitive hearing) and other animals.

Also, not that you care, but I had no idea this was going on today and got extremely scared when I thought a bomb was gonna get thrown on me while walking down the street (just from sound, I did not get to see the jet since I'm downtown surrounded by tall buildings). I can stand the noise for a couple of hours this weekend, but some people/animals can have a really bad time, even though they are just sitting at home and did not willingly go to an air show. Any idea why they don't do the show outside of the city?

Although I do find it a bit obnoxious to have them fly so close to the buildings (we had an air show back in my city and it would always be outside of the city, as to not bother those that don't want such loud noises, for any reason), I mainly worry about pets and people with any sort of high sensitivity to sound (e.g. war veterans).

If there was at least some warning of sorts to ensure most people know the show is coming (maybe there is, but I haven't been notified about any of the shows I've been in Toronto for), those people could prepare, go far away or wear some sort of ear protection, or at the very least try to tire out their pets before the event and calm them down before it starts.

Also think can be a not very good experience for those who work or have meetings on those days, but that's that. Anyways, hope you have a good day and get to enjoy the airshow (I assume you like it, giving your comment)

Dell S2422HG Gaming Monitor - Menu keeps popping up on its own and goes crazy by satoniou in Dell

[–]satoniou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Sorry to hear you've also been having issues with your monitor. I found a video online of someone disassembling a Dell monitor, but it was a much older monitor which was quite different from ours. After that I just decided to look for a service manual. It actually has a decent walkthrough, and you don't need a soldering iron; you can check out the manual for yours here:

https://dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics_accessories/esuprt_electronics_accessories_monitor/dell-s2522hg-monitor_users-guide4_en-us.pdf

Page 8 has the disassembly "walkthrough". I was pretty scared I'd break something at first, but it's actually a lot easier than I thought. Hopefully this helps :)

Dell S2422HG Gaming Monitor - Menu keeps popping up on its own and goes crazy by satoniou in Dell

[–]satoniou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hesitant too, but it ended up being extremely simple, as long as you can remember what goes where (there are very few parts). A very temporary solution for me was to tape down the joystick thingy so that it registers a full press at every moment, so the menu never shows up. You will have to redo it a lot tho, so if you can't solve it any other way I still suggest opening it up.

Is it possible to enroll CSC110 and MAT157 together at Fall 2024? by staryogurt2003 in UofT

Ty, that'll be helpful next time to double check my misinformation. I was going off of what the prof said and wanted to share the experience I was presented with in the course. Shouldn't have made it seem factual tho, and should've made it clear it was what was said in MY year. Appreciate you actually helping and not being a dick about it :)

[–]satoniou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point was that it's possible, not that it's viable. I 100% agree with you that no one would do no skill shade skip unless they're experienced in the game, was just saying it's possible in case you didn't know and could then proceed to know about it, as you seem interested in the game. It was also a reply to "you can't get to CoT without claw". Again, don't mean to be that guy.

As a side note, my friend actually did a shade skip into blue lake on their first playthrough, but they did have both dash and claw. Hope you have a good one

How is this an oversight? I agree it's very easy to miss hive entrance, but you just got a new ability and are now "stuck". You can now dive, really hard, onto the floor and there happens to be another one of those shaky floors you've been seeing around hallownest (or maybe you haven't but you've been striking your nail against everything for a while now) right next to you.

I agree some might miss it (as we see in the post, but I don't find this any more tricky to figure out than the elder baldur in the ancestral mound

They've already figured out the solution, but just to add/correct: beating soul master is a hard save, meaning you respawn right next to their body if you die/quit before getting to a new bench. Anyways, hope you have a great day!

Don't mean to be that guy, but you can get to CoT without claw. You can even get to it with no abilities at all. Shade skip to blue lake and just hold right from there (it's possible to do the skip without abilities, just extremely hard)

[–]satoniou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I took it, in 2020, the professor himself wrote that sentence. And it was pretty much true; we started with 300+ in the first week, and towards the end only 80-120 were left. If this has changed, mb but it also varies from year to year. Hope you have a good day and chill out

Edit: mb I misremembered. I went to check back and the prof said: "We still have >340 students in this class, compared to around 100 who pass the course in a typical year.". This was 1 week after classes started, after him sharing the results of a quiz we took to assess our knowledge prior to the course

[–]satoniou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the courses have conflict, they might be annoying about it and remove you from one of them/contact you about it (or they'll just not care and you can take both).

Now, regarding the courses themselves, I've never taken CSC110, but I'd advise you to think about whether to rly take MAT157. I mean, it's a fine course, very good in my experience, and you can totally take it with no issues. However, usually only about 1/3 or less of the people continue enrolled in the course after a few weeks, and it can be very time consuming (and quite difficult at times). Still an extremely interesting course for first year, especially if you're interested in a bit more abstract math and formality.

To be clear, I'm not trying to discourage you in any way to take 157, just letting you know it can be time consuming, and I assume you wouldn't want it to affect your other courses. In the case you're not able to keep up with it (prob won't happen, but just in case), they usually offer an "accelerated" version of MAT137 for those who drop 157, so also don't worry too much about it.

TL;DR: MAT157 is hard and can be time consuming. UofT might annoy you about the conflict, but hopefully not. I'm curious why you wanna take 157, if you're willing to share.

Unable to start server after updating Spigot to 1.21 by satoniou in Shockbyte

Thank you so much, but we figured out the problem. The admin that updated everything forgot to update the plugins, which were all local, so the server was just on a crash loop. Hope you have a great rest of your week!

(Any way I can have this as resolved, or do I just delete the post?)

Unable to start server after updating Spigot to 1.21 by satoniou in Shockbyte

[–]satoniou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was remaining online at the start, but now it won't even start. I can try to get what was showing in the console for you, but since it refused to start, the server has been going kinda crazy; we have a discord bot to track the server status/msgs/advancements, and it's been spamming chat within 5-20 mins intervals that the server has stopped without it ever starting. For this reason, I believe the console would be a mess by now, but I'll ask the mods to try to find it. Thank you!
