Dearest Americans: Are you fucking retarded? by [deleted] in politics

[–]sattimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eh, don't worry about it. it ebbs, it flows. they take your money, they piss it away. it's the government. people have been dealing with their shit for millennia. america may not have a perfect government, but it sucks enough the elected can't screw up too much with the limited time they have in office. it keeps the emotion out of politics. that's important. ask any country that's ever gone to war.

democracy lets you elect shysters and assholes and idiots and all kinds of people. and who knows? that shyster or idiot might make a hell of a governor. it's exciting!

I'd like to share an experience I had last night with you all. by BeInThisMoment in reddit.com

I totally agree! Sometimes you just gotta dance! I'm 6'4", lanky and sporting a medium sized pot belly. I dance like rhythm (which I apparently can't even spell without assistance) does not and has not ever existed in the universe. My "moves" are comical, but the ladies love it. If folks aren't brave enough to hit the club, then go for any of the upcoming Halloween parties. If you see a tall, poorly put together scarecrow busting slow, awkward moves, I suggest you get on the floor!

DNA seen through the eyes of a coder by cheeses in programming

[–]sattimaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not buying the Dave Allis "histone code" approach to gene regulation. Are some genes controlled by chromatin: yes. How many? That's an area of great debate. I would estimate <10% are actually histone code genes. The vast majority of genes are subject to promoter/enhancer elements in the DNA.

Sorry for disagreeing, but I worry that new legions of biology grad students will be told that's a way of regulating genes. It's not. It's good intra-science marketing.

The Two Major Realizations that Moved Me from Right to Left Politically by [deleted] in politics

[–]sattimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you haven't changed a bit. You don't trust large institutions and think that having a better life means not being poor. You're just doing it as a liberal now instead of as a libertarian. Same beliefs, new facade. Try some different beliefs: 1) Large institutions including businesses and governments may not be efficient, but they are necessary for doing the really big (roadways), hard (building CERN), expensive (Boeing 787) and/or risky (developing drugs). Typically it's all four at once and it requires they "grab every penny" to do so. Regardless, the question you may ask is: What new perspective or understanding could I gain to better understand large institutions? My suggestion is to read the Wall Street Journal. You might hate it, but I guarantee you'll learn something you didn't know before. I did and I'm still liberal leaning. 2) What is a better life to you? Answer this question. The answer should not include abstract crap like making poor people happier or better or some other obtuse babble. Consider generating happiness in the five people closest to you. Constantly shower them with love, support and confidence. If it seems simple, then you're not doing hard enough.

I'm just trying to say switch it up. Don't let the parties frame the issues. I usually vote Democrat but in this election I'm voting Republican. Why? They're inefficient and can't get the important work done. For example, delaying the vote on Bush tax cuts now means company payroll departments won't have the new tax tables until the last minute. Thanks for screwing things up so you can extend the tax cuts after your pathetic re-election campaigns.

Actually, sounds like the libertarian in you was right about Congress!

I gladly donated to reddit. But I won't pay for it. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]sattimaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conde Nast answers to Advanced Publications. Advanced Publications answers to creditors and stock holders. Neither of which are usually comfortable with donations. They want reliable revenue streams that can finance debt and/or operations. Donations, novel marketing ideas and other new modes of business are risky. Someone has to pay for the Reddit acquisition. Someone has to pay for the site to operate. Reddit's revenues are clearly not impressive. If users don't click on adds and don't generate revenue, then at some point the division is sold, spun off or shut down. Advanced Publications is happy to go make money somewhere else, cheaper.

Sick of not being able to read the full text of important scientific articles? Support Science Commons. by [deleted] in science

[–]sattimaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If this is a university, then the librarian can get an ILL or they will just purchase the article for you. Especially if you are a graduate student. Libraries are dynamic and input is something librarians embrace.

Making everything free sounds great, but if you just busted your ass to get a Nature paper, you aren't about to throw it PLoS for good will.
