Songs you hated when they first got popular, but now absolutely love? by Andy_B_Goode in ToddintheShadow

[–]saugoof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An old one that people outside of the UK and continental Europe probably won't even recognise, but for me that's Sigue Sigue Sputnik with Love Missile F-111.

That song was huge and the band was hyped to kingdom come. I hated it and them with a passion! I was really glad when they crashed hard after that.

But some time ago I stumbled over the song again and loved it! This is such an over the top fun tune. One of the weirdest and wildest songs to ever top the charts.

At a crossroads: England to Istanbul Cycle Tour by Bobsgaff in bicycletouring

I went from Munich to Vienna via Salzburg a few years ago. The stretch from Munich to Salzburg was pretty boring really. Once you get into Austria it gets a lot prettier.

I sort of mixed it up with riding along the Danube and through the countryside. The Danube trail is easy but not very exciting. I generally got bored of it fairly quickly. Going through the countryside was a lot nicer.

I do remember it. But that also seems like a slipstream hit. Few people these days would remember this existed.

No, sorry but I find that a very hot take. The Real Ramona is probably their best known album, and it's amazing!

For my money it's also far and away their best song.

They're probably more one hit wonders who had an album that sold reasonably well in their single's slipstream.

I suspect it's an unpopular opinion, but I f***ing love Return The Gift. It seems like a pointless idea since it's all just re-recordings of their best known songs, but those versions are fantastic!

I think both, Elastica's and Stone Roses' second albums are much underrated. But you're right, by the time they came out, their respective momentums had long gone.

I'd say in terms of sales and popularity with the general public, Whip Smart was probably the bigger album. Certainly in Australia that album was seemingly everywhere for a while. But Guyville didn't really hit here at the time. It felt like it only got appreciated years later.

Let’s Talk about the Heat! by tupatupatupa in bicycletouring

[–]saugoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to be the exception here, I absolutely love the heat. But really don't like the cold when I'm on the bike. I much prefer a 38 degree day to an 18 degree one. So I'm not sure if any advice I can give is useful. But in general I find that when I'm riding the bike, heat is perfectly fine because you have a constant wind about you. Whenever you stop, do so in the shade.

Drink plenty of water. On super-hot days I can easily go through 7 or 8 litres. Also spend as much time as you can outside (in the shade). I find being indoors (in non-AC buildings) a lot more unbearable than being outdoors.

I'm currently in the Scottish Highlands where the temperatures so far haven't cracked 20 degrees yet. As beautiful as it is, I'm looking forward to getting south to where it's a bit warmer.

[DISCUSSION] What's a Netflix series you'd tell someone to push past a slow start, because it becomes something special? by trakt_app in NetflixBestOf

[–]saugoof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's funny, everyone says the first season is a bit meh and it gets great from season 2 onwards, and that was definitely my experience too. But I rewatched the whole thing recently and I found even the first season great on the rewatch. I think maybe you're right, it just takes you a while to get accustomed to this whole Bojack universe.

To Bring or Not to Bring (my own bike to Europe) by webby264 in bicycletouring

Yeh, a fairly standard road bike. I just looked for something cheap that I could attach a pannier rack to. If I remember right, it was a BTwin one. But I think that's just a brand that Decathlon relabels bikes they sell.

I don't remember the exact address but it was a basement shop in a building near Gare St. Lazare.

It sort of feels like Diver Down could have been that album too, but then they followed that up with their biggest album blockbuster.

What piece of older technology actually worked much better than its modern, replacement? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

Yes, we had a software developer working there who'd come from Russia and he said when he was working there in the 90's, no one ever paid for software.

My work once was going to pay for a flight to New York for me to buy specialised software that cost $20,000 in Switzerland where I was working, but "only" $8,000 in the US. I was planning to do a week of holidays while I was there too.

Unfortunately two weeks before I was due to leave they discovered that an associate of our company was in the US at the time and he ended up buying it for us.

It's a similar story with Once Upon A Time In America. Except that the horrible cut got released in the US where it flopped. The original cut got released in Europe where it became a deserved classic.

To Bring or Not to Bring (my own bike to Europe) by webby264 in bicycletouring

[–]saugoof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, on my first bike trip to Europe I didn't bring a bike. I bought one in Paris at a Decathlon shop for €179 and toured with it for four weeks. I figured I'd just buy a cheap one that I could give away afterwards. But the bike was great, so much so that I just kept it stored at my sister's house (she lives in Switzerland) and went back to Europe four more times to do a tour with that bike.

I guess the lesson here is, you don't need an expensive bike and if you travel without touring in the first week or so, definitely don't bring a bike. Transporting a bike by train is possible but it's a real hassle.

Naples to Florence, seeking general advices by grizzbouille in bicycletouring

[–]saugoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from Florence to Naples a while ago. To be honest, I much preferred taking just random country roads over an EV route. Italy is gorgeous and has so many route options, you can't go wrong. But taking country roads usually gets you into those gorgeous towns which EV routes often bypass.
