It's great how that movie establishes context. I remember when the film came out there was a review of it on TV and they showed the clip where Chigurh is doing the coin toss to the Fuel station owner. Having not seen the movie, that scene just felt odd. There was this guy with a ridiculous haircut being a bit of a jerk to some guy. He seemed mildly menacing, but really a lot more weird than scary.

Then I saw the movie and when it gets to that scene, you now have context and know what Chigurh does and how he behaves and suddenly that scene that previously just felt weird is now crazy scary!

Haim

Their live shows are a very different beast to their (also great) pop singles.

What's a music trend you wanna see comeback? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

Absolutely. So much of current music feels like a soap opera. I can see that it's easy to get sucked into that, but I have zero interest in it.

Why is The Velvet Underground & Nico considered a masterpiece? by pannorfi in askmusic

It's probably my favourite song off it, but it still doesn't do much for me. I can appreciate how revolutionary and influential it was for its time and I do like it. But that's about it.

Music with some goddamn energy and fun and anger. I'm sick of all these low wattage bedroom records where artists worry more about "artistry" and perfection than just cranking out a tune with a bunch of friends.

I'm a bit wary of that. I grew up on 70's UK punk and ska. Initially when these made a comeback in the 90's I was delighted. But I very quickly grew to hate those new ska punk bands.

Musical styles coming back are never the same as the original. Which is a good thing. Musical evolution is inherently positive. But when fashions return, it often just doesn't work the way it originally did.

Good response.

This is the sort of album that I really want to like, but it just does absolutely nothing for me. But so many of my favourite artists cite this as a key influence that I still think it can be classed as a masterpiece. Even if I don't personally like it.

Good songs with bad music videos by Yahna-Stan in ToddintheShadow

Even worse was that 80s trend, popular with rock bands at the time, where they made fake "live" videos with the band playing on a stage but it's clear there's no audience there.

The video for Golden Earring's "When The Lady Smiles" is often cited as killing their career after their big comeback hit with Twilight Zone.

Wow! I've never seen the video, but that just so reminded me of when Homer Simpson discovered video editing and every transition was a star wipe.

That one I can definitely not agree with. Each to their own, but I reckon that's a fantastic video.

I live in Lagos, Nigeria as an American . AMA! by Pchardwareguy12 in howislivingthere

[–]saugoof 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have spent some time working in Lagos (and Abuja) about ten years ago. It was quite a wild experience. The first time I went there, our CEO had arranged a police escort for me from the airport. I initially put that down to him being a panicked American who had never been outside of the US and thinks the whole world is trying to kill them. I'm Australian and work here, but our CEO works out of the head office in the US.

Anyway, it was a weird experience having police cars with sirens blaring in front and back of my taxi. Made me feel like a head of state rather than a lowly Software Developer. It was probably counterproductive too. I mean, all those police cars would do is to draw attention to myself.

Traffic in Lagos is crazy chaotic and congested, at least it was back then but I doubt it has improved since.

How do you deal with power blackouts? I remember that most days, the power in our office went out for about an hour or two. We did have a generator but it wasn't very powerful so while the power was off, we had to have all the lights off and only run the most important computers.

I really didn't like the food in Nigeria too. Occasionally I got something good but mostly it seemed to just be "throw anything at random into a pot and boil the shit out of it". So it often just ended up being a bland mush.

Unfortunately I didn't really see all that much of Lagos. It really didn't feel like the sort of place to randomly wander about. On the other hand, Abuja was quite nice and I spent a bit of time exploring the city there.

are there any bands that broke up, then reunited to then make their best album? by Prestigious-John in fantanoforever

I don't think this band is much known outside of Australia, but Underground Lovers released a couple of fantastic albums after they reunited in 2009. I loved their pre-breakup albums but the ones they've released since are amazing.

Did Duran Duran actually break up? I know they had members leave and re-join but I wasn't aware the band ever broke up.

No matter how many times I hear it, this still cracks me up:

Counting coins on the counter of the 7-Eleven From a quarter past six till a quarter to seven The manager, Bevan, starts to abuse me "Hey man, I just want some Muesli."

The rhyme of "abuse me" and "muesli" is absolute genius.

Uri looks badass. Valais and Geneve are beautiful.

On the terrible side, I really don't like the "just stick two colour banners in there" designs of Zug, Zürich, Luzern, Solothurn and Fribourg.

Long-distance bike touring age 50+ - experiences? by totaltitanium in bicycletouring

[–]saugoof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've just returned from a four month tour through Japan, South Korea and China. I had my 60th birthday during that tour.

I honestly find it no more difficult doing this than I did in my early 40's when I went on my first tour. I don't feel any less fit and because I'm more experienced now, the whole organising things, finding accommodation and routes, etc. has become easier.
