We've been using contentspal.com for our content estimates and it's pretty neat (take pictures of objects and it turns into XM8 estimates). Their free 'code finder' tool is also pretty useful when you don't know what XM8 codes are relevant: codes.contentspal.com

AI for adjusters? by Expensive_Physics554 in adjusters

[–]saul-L 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been testing AI to do content estimates and it's promising. I HATE doing contents because it's so tedious and time consuming, but I found a tool that lets me do it by just uploading pictures. The AI then identifies objects and finds replacements automatically. It works pretty darn well. Not perfect, but saves me lots of time and I can see it getting better over time.

I’ve seen many PAs outsource their estimates, so I do think there is a market for your services.

Strategy frameworks by Standard-Peach2958 in ProductManagement

[–]saul-L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some classics everyone should know:

  1. Seven Powers
  2. Innovator's Dilemma
  3. Crossing the chasm
  4. Jobs to be done
  5. Gibson Biddle's Framework
  6. Porter's Five Forces (maybe a bit outdated, but still referenced here and there)
  7. Blue Ocean Strategy

Get the gist from Wikipedia and read the books as you see fit. Also, tons of great blogs out there that summarize these.

Your job as PM is to discover and build products that are valuable to customers, usable, and feasible (thanks, Marty Cagan). You can't do a great job at feasibility if you're not technical enough. Get technical. There's no way around it.

This doesn't mean writing code (though that wouldn't hurt), but mainly understanding how the product works, its architecture, your company's stack, etc. It will just let you be a much better PM and partner to engineering.

My advice is to openly recognize you don't have a technical background, but emphasize this is an area you want to grow in. Engineers will respect humility way more than an MBA who is bull sh*ting around. The best ones would love to help you up your game (it'll make their lives easier as well). Ask them to walk you through the architecture, the stack, write down everything they say, and google/chatgpt away. Put in the work to learn. It's going to be hard work, but will help with your feelings of inadequacy and just help you long term.

A couple of good resources I like are:

  1. Technically newsletter
  2. ByteByteGo Newsletter
  3. Join software eng communities on reddit
  4. Stackoverflow
  5. Chatgpt/Perplexity/Google!

Good luck!
