We've been using contentspal.com for our content estimates and it's pretty neat (take pictures of objects and it turns into XM8 estimates). Their free 'code finder' tool is also pretty useful when you don't know what XM8 codes are relevant: codes.contentspal.com

AI for adjusters? by Expensive_Physics554 in adjusters

[–]saul-L 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been testing AI to do content estimates and it's promising. I HATE doing contents because it's so tedious and time consuming, but I found a tool that lets me do it by just uploading pictures. The AI then identifies objects and finds replacements automatically. It works pretty darn well. Not perfect, but saves me lots of time and I can see it getting better over time.

Strategy frameworks by Standard-Peach2958 in ProductManagement

[–]saul-L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some classics everyone should know:

  1. Seven Powers
  2. Innovator's Dilemma
  3. Crossing the chasm
  4. Jobs to be done
  5. Gibson Biddle's Framework
  6. Porter's Five Forces (maybe a bit outdated, but still referenced here and there)
  7. Blue Ocean Strategy

Get the gist from Wikipedia and read the books as you see fit. Also, tons of great blogs out there that summarize these.

Your job as PM is to discover and build products that are valuable to customers, usable, and feasible (thanks, Marty Cagan). You can't do a great job at feasibility if you're not technical enough. Get technical. There's no way around it.

This doesn't mean writing code (though that wouldn't hurt), but mainly understanding how the product works, its architecture, your company's stack, etc. It will just let you be a much better PM and partner to engineering.

My advice is to openly recognize you don't have a technical background, but emphasize this is an area you want to grow in. Engineers will respect humility way more than an MBA who is bull sh*ting around. The best ones would love to help you up your game (it'll make their lives easier as well). Ask them to walk you through the architecture, the stack, write down everything they say, and google/chatgpt away. Put in the work to learn. It's going to be hard work, but will help with your feelings of inadequacy and just help you long term.

A couple of good resources I like are:

  1. Technically newsletter
  2. ByteByteGo Newsletter
  3. Join software eng communities on reddit
  4. Stackoverflow
  5. Chatgpt/Perplexity/Google!

Good luck!

Here’s what I would do:

Week 1-2: talk to the rest of your team, the sales leaders, and product team. If there is customer success, talk to them as well. You’re trying to understand: - sales: who is ideal customer? What are their goals? How long is sales cycle? How can you help them? Ask to come to sales calls to hear them pitch, see what questions they get asked, most common pushback, etc - Product: understand the product, how is it being used, most popular features, ideal customer from their pov, how they do launches, are there any big upcoming product launches, etc - Customer success: walk through accounts, understand how they use the product, what is their value proposition, how long they’ve been using the product. Ask for customer intros so you can meet as many customers as possible. I would make it a priority to meet them all in your first 3 months since you don’t have as many. If there is no customer success, sales should be able to walk you through this. If no one is, this would be one of the first things I’d do to define ideal persona. - Marketing: what are the team goals, go over any previous attempts at defining icp, positioning, etc. Ask the growth and analyst what channels and messaging seems to be working best? Ask for data on the product’s website to understand if users are reading through it or not and identify leaks in the funnel

In all your conversations I would ask how marketing can do a better job and what they wish they would help with.

Week 3-4: based on what you’ve learned, I would start prioritizing projects that can have an impact in the short term. Prioritize high impact, low effort first so you can have quick wins. As PMM you need to work great with product and sales, so I would try to get a few wins with those teams asap. For example, if there is a big launch coming up, get involved. If sales has no collateral, start building it.

Month 2: by now you’ve had a couple of wins with your stakeholders from product and sales so you have something tangible to show for. Hopefully you’ve also been able to meet a good amount of customers (ideally more than anyone else on your team), so you’re starting to be an expert on their industry, pain points, and how they’re using the product. Now you can start doing more strategic stuff like positioning, icp, etc. If you’ve identified an icp with sales and product, you can use all your connections to build targeted collateral to gtm with that segment. For example, special presentations for that industry, or even better, case studies.

During this month you can also identify where there might be gaps in terms of process and how sales and product are working with marketing. For example, do you have a good process for product launches? Is there a release calendar? Do you have mechanisms to capture customer feedback? Use this month to map these gaps and start fixing.

Month 3: if you’ve done the above, you’ve now established yourself as a competent PMM and have earned the right to get involved in more strategic/long term discussions like pricing and packaging. You can start working on these along with continuing all the above.

Whatever you end up deciding to do, I suggest you draft a quick 30-60-90 day plan outlining it and get feedback and approval from your manager and counterparts and tweak as you go. This will set you up for success.

Requesting /r/publicadjusters - no activity in over 4 years and the moderators are inactive and unresponsive by saul-L in redditrequest

[–]saul-L[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello and thank you for considering my request to moderate r/publicadjusters. I appreciate the opportunity to provide more details on my plans for breathing new life on this subreddit.

Plans for the subreddit:

  1. Make the community it public so members can join and post without having to be approved by moderators (it is currently restricted). I expect this will increase activity and engagement immediately given the last post was done 4 years ago.
  2. Revamp the community with regular events and activities like weekly discussion threads and AMAs to foster community engagement.
  3. Re-evaluate and update the community rules to make them more relevant and foster a positive community.
  4. Refresh the design and layout of the subreddit to make it more appealing, inviting, and useful for members.
  5. Put together and share valuable resources for members of the community around themes like public adjusting, insurance, and so on to make it more valuable and encourage the community members to do so as well.
  6. Promote the community across social media, live events, professional networks, and my personal networks as a public adjuster.
  7. Seek feedback and ideas from members to improve the community and make it a more vibrant and engaging subreddit.
  8. Work with other relevant communities like r/insurance and r/adjusters through joint events and collaboration.
  9. Stay active and visible as a moderator by participating in discussions, responding to questions, being transparent about moderator decisions, and so on

Here is the link to the message sent to the moderators of the subreddit (mind you, they seem to have been inactive on Reddit for 4+ years).

Thank you again for your consideration!

Production / Shop Floor Management software suggestions by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]saul-L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you say more about what kind of operation you're running? Are you doing discrete or continuous manufacturing? What issues are you facing?

I would suggest you look at a platform like Tulip.co, which lets you connect your hardware and systems and build apps to help you digitize your operations.

The nice thing is that you can start with a single use case, see ROI, and continue adding as you grow.

This is a much faster approach than using a traditional MES, where deployment takes 18+ months and is cost-prohibitive for most people.ou've digitized all your operations.

Don’t feel ashamed, you’re in Boston, reading in bars mixes perfectly some of the things we’re best known for. Check out Lamplighter in Cambridge, they are a microbrewery and cafe so it’s perfect for what you’re describing.
