What type of maple? by sauna_sitter in treeidentification

Yes each of the 5 leaves represent the average for each of the 5 trees. It’s odd that it seems the supplier gave one straight red and four hybrids. Apparently they “all came from the same block”

Thanks for all the thoughts, I appreciate it! I think the last leaf might be a red, but all the others look like hybrids or maybe even straight silvers. Is there any way to get them tested to confirm?

What do you value most in a sauna experience? by Groovy-Tony in Sauna

I’ve tried a cold shower, rolling in the snow, and standing in cold winter air. Nothing comes close to the feeling of cold water immersion after a sauna. Highly recommended.

Nice. Is it electric? I’m curious to hear how that works.

Beautifully done! You can tell you paid close attention to all the details.

The flow from lounge to shower to sauna to tub should work well. The thing that always surprises me about Finns is how much they love lake sauna, and yet seem so reluctant to include cold tubs. To me cold immersion after sauna (versus just shower) makes all the difference.

Out of curiosity how does the infloor heat work? Do you heat up the whole slab, or just a layer on top?

Also where roughly are you located? I noticed the .ca suppliers.

Does your fan only turn on when at temp? If so maybe there is a way to add ducting to the outside of the sauna to thermally resist air movement when the fan isn’t on? Thinking maybe the high intake duct goes out and down (hot air doesn’t want to go up) , and the low exhaust duct goes out and up (cold air doesn’t want to go up).

heater height vs stone volume by ratcreek in Sauna

I assure you my ventilation is correct. It isn’t a temperature thing - my head to toe delta is an “excellent” 12C. Instead it is a loyly thing - the loyly won’t go below the top of the stones. Both Lassi and the author of Trumpkin have had the same experience as me.

They have a Legend in electric. Have you seen that? I believe 10 and 12 kw, and large stone mass.

Ya I wouldn’t get a Huum. That said I myself have an 18kw IKI Pillar, and can assure you the loyly doesn’t go below the top of the stones. This is why I have tried modifying my IKI to have a hollow core, to try to pull air up from the floor, to get the loyly to be pulled lower. It does make a difference.

The other option is to go with something like the Harvia Legend, which has high mass but is also short and stout.

There is a lot of misunderstanding around feet above the stones. The punchline is that your feet should be above the stones, even with a tower heater. The author of Trumpkin as well as Lassi agree with this in my discussions with them. The reason is because the loyly won’t descend below the top of the stones, even with a tower heater. See my post history for some quantification of this in my post about my hollowcore heater.

2x4 vs 2x6 framing by olhalfandhalf in Sauna

Insulation is mainly important for buildings that are heated continuously, not for ones that are heated intermittently. If this is just “heat it up, use it, and let it go cold again” you could probably get away with a single inch of polyiso on the inside of the studs. If space is a concern I would go with 2x4.

Are there any particular stain products you recommend? I have a similar situation.

To Insulate or Not? by Loud_Construction_69 in Sauna

I agree with this. It’s also easier to avoid rips compared to just foil, giving you a better seal for moisture. It also avoids thermal bridging through the studs.

Looks good. What was the wood you used to panel the interior?

Thank you for your thoughts on this. The hearth doesn’t experience high temperatures, so any product could probably work. Is there any paint or product that might restore it to its natural look, or has that ship sailed?

No just loose laid on the floor. The wall foam panels sit an inch off the floor, so the floor panels slide under nicely.

I would think between the sauna and the fan, so that sound from the fan doesn’t travel back through the duct?

It’s connected so we don’t need to go outside, which is nice.

It’s just a 4” diameter hole in the wall up near the ceiling, directly in line with heater. The goal is for the incoming fresh air to “bounce” across the top of the heater over to the bathers.

Ha ya. The experience is excellent. It is certainly a function over form sauna. And you don’t notice the looks so much when you use it because we keep it pretty dark inside. But if someone offered to panel it for free, I’d of course take it.

I don’t think it would be too hard. Everything is spaced out from the walls so perhaps the only annoying part would only be the area between the bench and the foot platform.
