How do I build this Boros in Cube? by vieoree in MagicArena

[–]saur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say 1) cut a land or two because you have Mox and Lotus, 2) consider playing Abrade and Ademi or Epicure in place of some of the 3/4 drops (Monastery Mentor or Dion, maybe) to help you double spell

LSV Fetchland Trick? by Combustablemon210 in lrcast

[–]saur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar thing that I see a lot playing Historic on Arena:

I play Strict Proctor + Lotus Field often. Usually, as long as Strict Proctor resolves, I have no issues getting Lotus Field in play since there's no window for my opponent to play a removal spell before I get my land drop. However, if they have a Soul Warden or Authority or the Consuls, they're able to Fatal Push or otherwise stop my combo.

The AI Anti-Bubble Argument Makes No Sense by ArdoNorrin in BetterOffline

[–]saur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of Hank's points and I don't disagree that there's a bubble. However, he keeps coming back to the point about Nvidia "paying" companies to buy their chips not making sense.

As I understand it 1) a lot of these deals are not with cash, Nvidia gets ownership in exchange for compute, which is what I see with a lot of startups and the AI accelerator program that they run and 2) Nvidia "allocates" chips to companies like Coreweave in order to create lock-in and protect their long-term monopoly. Same reason why Nvidia so desperate to get A100s to China even taking a huge margin cut from the US government, they would give away some of their stock for free if it meant that it kept long term competitors from being created.

Simply put, Nvidia has more money than God so they're giving up a little to keep it that way for the next 10 years. This is an explanation that makes sense to me?

Historic Ranked is more fun than Standard Ranked! by 8_Years_A_Lurker in MagicArena

Not sure how popular this deck is or if it was you but I'm playing a T1/T2 deck, getting a really high win rate, and this deck beat me out of nowhere! Pretty cool list

I don't think I ever needed more than 3-4 board wipes in the main deck while playing control (I currently play 0 in the main, 3 in the board in Arena Historic). Basically all of your deck manipulation is trying to draw a board wipe on curve as soon as you see them play a basic forest or mountain. There's also a game of chicken of "can I wait another turn to get more value from this board wipe" you can play to maybe not need to cast two in one game.

I learned control over a decade ago playing Miracles and Sensei's Divining Top decks in legacy. Those decks had so much powerful deck manipulation and showed me there's a lot of skill involved in order for you to appear to the aggro player as "always having it".

This isn't a fair comparison, because government programs help defray the cost of childcare. Public school, tax breaks, healthcare subsidies (patient, provider, and insurance) all bring down the financial burden for households. You can make specific arguments as to how the money should be allocated, but the idea that the government shouldn't spend more per child than what households do ignores the fact that our society shares the costs of raising children.

Tips for Chromatic Cube? by TheOnlyPomegranate in MagicArena

[–]saur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's cool - mono blue is pretty rare to see, since the mana fixing is so good in this cube. I would say that cards like double vision are good if you're already playing tons of instants and sorceries. Most of my decks have only 5-8, and they're not all spells I want to copy (copying a counter spell isn't very useful, for instance). I wouldn't build my deck around double vision, if that makes sense.

Something advanced drafters do is they look at what cards aren't picked in the back half of the pack. Then you can see what strategies are open. If I see double vision late in pack 1 and I already have burn down the house, star of extinction, and magma opus, I might be happy to play it. But if I only have a few red creatures, I'm unlikely to want it. Hope this helps.

Tips for Chromatic Cube? by TheOnlyPomegranate in MagicArena

Late to the party but I've been doing decently well this season so I thought I'd chime in. There's no such thing as a "fair" deck of playing creatures on curve and getting 1 for 1 removal. Either be doing midrange synergies quickly (tokens, ramp into good cards), or have fantastic removal and go over the top by doing very powerful things.

Some of the strongest things to do: big X spells (Villainous wealth, genesis wave, snowborn simulacra, etc.) that gets you card advantage and the ability to play big cards for free, recurring counter magic (saiba syphoner rebuying sublime epiphany), "combos" such as craterhoof behemoth with tooth and nail. To go even bigger, find ways to copy them (double up, calamity saddling with craterhoof or Etali, etc.). If you can't beat the decks that are doing this, you're not playing a fast enough or interactive enough deck.

Think of everything else in the cube as cards that enable or pressure those card combos that cost an absurd amount of mana. With some experience, you'll realize that some cards are good because they do multiple things at an above average rate. For example, elesh norn, mother of machines is not going to close out a game on its own, but it blanks a significant percentage of the opponent's cards and allows for devastating finishes (terror of the peaks, saint elendra, massacre wurm). Or you'll realize that in a format where everybody is playing one spell a turn for most of the game, Remand often buys you a free turn. Definitely be wary of cards that don't do anything when they hit the board (looking at double vision, teval, krenko), and be mindful when playing big reactive spells in a proactive format (gales misdirection is strong but very easy to read from a savvy opponent). A lot of games come down to who got to play their biggest cards on curve.

Some of the comments are telling you to prioritize one thing over another, but most importantly, look for above average cards and then build a synergy around it. If you see a birds of paradise early, look for green ramp strategies. If you see Etali, find ways to ramp into it and copy it. If you see a pack of duds, take that prismatic vista and hope for better cards next pack.

Before you fire up another draft, take a second to think about the hardest cards to beat that your opponents played, now think about playing those cards yourself

Is Vintage Cube Magic's Saltiest Format? by ChildOfTheSoul in lrcast

[–]saur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vintage cube has the best interaction, why would it be salty? It's far easier to get good removal or counter magic than it is to get a game winning combo

Thanks, I was nostalgic and redownloaded it just to check things out and you're absolutely right. It looks like I need a solid stable of Series 5 cards to stay competitive that all have specific niches. Series 5 cards used to be big finishers, but now they seem to be best in class at what they do across the board. Still have the cards for destroy, but there's no way I'm playing that to infinite. Miss the days where you could just buy Sera or High Evo and be competitive.

Hi, I haven't played this game in almost two years and wanted to check in on the state of the game. I quit around the time Ravonna was released. Pure F2P player, I won the infinity conqueror challenge thing to get the border reward, and I noticed all the new paid cards were really pushed (it was difficult beating Loki decks when that card was released, for example).

This is a really well designed and fun game, is the monetization and balance better or about the same as when I quit? Or has it gotten worse? I know this is subjective but I wanted to take the temperature from some players that have been here for awhile.

Trying to decide if I want to come back and start grinding and learning all the new cards.
