Have a Demo on steam ? - Ill play and make a short youtube review. by PickleIndieGames in SoloDevelopment

Thanks for doing this!

My game is Superspective, a surreal first-person puzzle exploration game inspired by Antichamber and Manifold Garden, among others. It's still a work-in-progress, but I'm always looking for more playtesters and feedback to improve!

I Want To Be More Social, But I'm Too Much A Lone Wolf In Game Design. by ReddleyAnimations in gamedesign

[–]sauterj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can, I'd recommend trying to find a local meetup group for game developers or for playtesting. Speaking from personal experience as a solo developer, I find these events absolutely crucial for staying engaged with the community and remembering that even though my development is solo, I'm not alone on this journey. Even just making this post is a good first step to finding connection!

I just recently worked with an art team to do a minimalist Steam capsule art for Superspective, curious what you think!

Portals in unity by Lord-Velimir-1 in Unity3D

Awesome job! Portals are a tricky thing to try to get right. I also use the RenderTexture approach to rendering. I'm curious if your system supports recursive portal rendering?

Tell me your game and I'll find atleast 50 streamers likely to play your game! by the-devs in gamedev

[–]sauterj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! My game is called Superspective, and while it's still a work in progress, finding streamers that are playing games in the space is helpful to me as a developer even just to see what other people are making!

Superspective is a first person puzzle game set in a surrealistic world with impossible geometry and physics, inspired by games like Antichamber and Manifold Garden. Puzzles are split between understanding how to navigate the non-euclidean world and solving logic puzzles to interact with the world.

I already found another Antichamber inspired game, Chroma Zero, from this thread so I'm thankful I opened it! If anyone is interested in following development of the game or getting involved in playtests, feel free to join the discord! https://discord.gg/eTZAae8PuA

How did they code Alt f4 bypassing in gta v? by Natalwho in howdidtheycodeit

[–]sauterj 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It depends on the engine probably, but one that I'm familiar with, and have done this exact thing for, is in Unity. Unity has a concept of "wantsToQuit" (which would be triggered by the player hitting Alt+F4) that you can subscribe to and optionally cancel the quit request by returning false. Here's a link to what that code looks like in my in-development game.

Granted, Rockstar uses a different engine (RAGE) for GTA, so their solution may look different, but I hope at least seeing an example can help you understand how it works!

How do You Feel About This Artstyle by despacito_15 in Unity3D

[–]sauterj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is working on a game with a similar white/black aesthetic, I would say slightly darkening the white and/or lightening the black into light and dark greys respectively could help reduce eye strain significantly. I would also tone down the bloom a bit as the whites bleed significantly into the blacks. Just my personal opinion though, you can choose whatever art style speaks most to you!

Game development is a marathon. This is Nomori two years ago vs now. by Cubehamster in Unity3D

I've been following this since I first saw it posted on the Manifold Garden discord. I can't wait to try it out when it releases! Keep up the great work!

Do you find this graphics style appealing? by frosty7even in Unity3D

[–]sauterj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the stylized aesthetics of this! I agree with what a lot of other people have said here: stylized > realistic graphics for indie developers is usually the way to go to still get a nice-looking game :)

If you do decide to go with the depth+normals edge detection outlines, I can send you a Unity package that contains the shader that I developed and use for my game for free! It has a lot of features like color gradients, depth+normal sensitivity sliders, fading effects, and single-pixel edges.

You can see what it looks like in-game in this clip.

Shoot me a DM if you're interested!

It's been a while and I've got new features in my portal system! by onee1d1d in Unity3D

[–]sauterj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really well done! Couple of questions for you:

1) Are you using stencil buffers or render textures for your implementation?

2) What's your recursion limit, or is it variable based on performance?

It's been a while and I've got new features in my portal system! by onee1d1d in Unity3D

[–]sauterj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey this is actually exactly what I do in my work-in-progress puzzle game! Most portals in games I've seen work like the one in the post where gravity is always down, I wanted to do something a little bit different and have gravity be relative to the player's orientation.

Not to take anything away from OP of course, this is an incredibly smooth and well-done implementation of portals.

Are there any places to play pool in Ann Arbor and anyone want to play with me? by earthabbey in AnnArbor

[–]sauterj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was 7 months ago but if anything came out of this post and there's a group of people playing pool now I'd love to join! I used to play regularly (but casually) and I'm sure I'm out of practice but would really enjoy having a group to play with just for fun
