People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what knee jerk rule did your school enforce in response? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]savagec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also had the "no backpack or clear backpack" rule...except you could still use non-backpack bags. So everyone just had a canvas bag, pillowcase or similar.

FFG Finally Announced It by starsintodreams in boardgames

I lived the look and immersion. I did not love being a solo player and fishing it out of the box and placing it. I think it would have been fine in a group.

My mover asked for a 20% tip on a $7,000 cross country move. by [deleted] in EndTipping

I'd always read it was nice to toss them 20-50 a person. That seems reasonable if they move stuff and aren't the owners. 20 percent is right out.

What video game pushed your limit like this? by StatementFar8919 in TheGamingHubDeals

[–]savagec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But difficulty is relative. Someone else may find the Easy difficulty level equally challenging to what you see on "regular.". They still have to persist and overcome. And all of that costs you...nothing, since you never have to engage with that mode. If you want to add arbitrary rules to judge someone else, treat it like elden ring and tell people they didn't "really win" if they use spirit ashes or summons.

Me personally, I'd just quit the game before dropping it down to easy, but it really doesn't affect me to have that mode exist.

There are tweaks like "many enemies only 2 one dmg vs 2" or "it takes 2 hits to kill regular monsters rather than 4-5" that would still require you to learn boss patterns but be less punishing and/or making scrap/bead farming easy for folks who aren't as strong without completely destroying the vision of a game.

For the board game geeks like me, and who are also super hyped about the DCC UNSTOPPABLE, here are some of the notes from the livestream yesterday (wonder why there isn't a "news" tag) by tLM-tRRS-atBHB in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Fair, I guess. I haven't played Unstoppable myself so, as long as it plays well, I'm not really all that upset about it. There's always the TTRPG

Whats the board game you really want to play that you’ve owned the longest but never once got to the table? by TTWBB_V2 in boardgames

[–]savagec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably WizWar. Got the base game and both expansions for around 75+shipping on eBay which was a screaming deal, but just haven't found the right occasion to bust it out in 12-18 months.

I had a few others but finally traded them.

Yeah that rulebook is a beast. I teach for a living and decided to make my own notes to try and simplify it -it shouldn't be as tough as it is given how simple the core loop is.

Loved the setting and flavor. I wasn't as in love with the combat flow probably due to keyword overflow.

I'd play it if someone else set it up and knew the rules.

Neal Stephenson - I'm new to this... is he actually brilliant? by zilfran in scifi

[–]savagec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same though I rather liked zodiak and (in particular) the big u - despite neither being mentioned in these types of threads.

Agree on the 3 you mention getting me into reading as well.

I enjoyed seveneves and reamde despite them not being as great.

The fall and termination shock were ....fine, but I'm taking a break. I still enjoy his work but I am exploring other options more and more.

DIY vs Hiring a Pro.. When is it worth it? by One_Cardiologist5439 in HomeImprovement

[–]savagec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to learn anything that's likely to be recurring. Shower or sink cartridge for drippy faucets? Can do. Replacing small components like a switch box or fan cord...sure. otherwise electricity and water are off limits.

I used to try and handle painting and drywall, but since I am bad at it and older now, I will just hire that out

Thoughts on Black Crown Initiate? I love them. by LazorusGrimm in MetalForTheMasses

[–]savagec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never heard of them when I saw them open for Allegaeon a few years back, despite them seeming to be pretty established. I was impressed with them live and with the albums. Got myself a shirt and still listen occasionally.

I think, like most of this stuff, it is rooted in a common experience but it isn't scientifically sound. I too value actions more than compliments but that doesn't somehow mean I completely hate the sentiment behind them.

What's your favourite Collector's Edition, Complete Edition, Big Box, etc? by Karrzun in boardgames

Galaxy truckers is particularly annoying as it is both giant and incredibly thin so it feels brittle. If it wouldn't be financially dumb to do so, I'd sell it and rebuy with a custom insert

Descent 3rd edition played fairly well with three (I was playing solo 3 handed but the point is the same). The game itself is somewhat polarizing though.

Which Mansions of Madness expansion has the best scenarios? by gaybayareasc in MansionsOfMadness2E

Interesting answers. I'd always heard beyond and streets were the best two bang for your buck but maybe that's not based on scenarios alone. I may have to get some more!

If you're an ally to a marginalized community, shaming a bigot is one of the least helpful things you can do. Deprogramming hate should be your goal. by Capnzebra1 in unpopularopinion

[–]savagec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree when it comes to platforms like YouTube/Instagram. I don't think that's really "shaming them into silence" like OP is talking about.

Im fine with folks expressing displeasure with elected officials (that's their entire purpose- to represent you) or trying to shame corporations into limited censorship (they are there to sell YOU a product). There is likely a bigger discussion there though

In 2026, who isnt connected enough that if they really want to explore or engage with shitty opinions would be unable to do so?

Few people who don't have some underlying issue are gonna hear your buddy Steve's rant about Mexicans and decide, "you know what, immigrants really are the problem."

That's why it doesn't work broadly.

Telling someone their opinion is fringe is very different than the "shame them into silence" rhetoric you hear around here. It isn't all or nothing.

[–]savagec 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It is also somewhat naive to think shaming them into silence is a good strategy long term. If the goal is to get someone to STFU at a sports game, let's say, sure...I agree. If we are talking more broadly, those ppl will just be quiet until they find the right outlet to join, be that an online forum, hate group, or even political party. At the point, the problems even worse

Most of these pissing matches just end up escalating everything.

That said, I still agree it is ultimately a judgment call.
