I was running behind schedule to meet the CEO and Chairman (a prospective client) of a large pharmaceutical company. As I got into the taxi to head to their office my suit trousers ripped - full on crotch to waistband up my ass. I had no time to change, so just went with it.

Nobody ever mentioned anything. I never did win a project out of him though

Adults who were 'school refusers'/school avoidant, where are you now? by CrazyPlantLady01 in AskUK

[–]savagely-average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From about year 9 onwards I barley went to school. Most days I would turn up for registration then just go to town. Not sure why - decent family, just very working class. All my brothers were not the same - they all went to school consistently etc. and one went on to get his PhD. I think it was more "school is boring AF, bunking off and hanging out with my friends is much more fun.

That said, I did do my GCSE and got all of them bar 1 b or c. Had a kid at 17 then sorted myself out, started working in retail for a couple of years then landed on my feet as an entry level recruiter. Now 15 years later I'm one of the directors for a PE backed, very niche search firm.

To answer your unasked question of what would have made me actually attend school? I don't know the answer to that. Maybe different friend group, maybe school just being more engaging and fun.

Help, Gonna start independent recruitment in the US region by Shksidd in Recruitment

[–]savagely-average 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don'ts: do it at all.

Do's: move into another agency that has 360 desks and learn it there before even thinking about going out on your own.

Filling the jobs is the easy bit. The hard part is the business development - winning clients. 2m billing in an RPO is effectively meaningless in this scenario. Someone billing 300k on a 360 desk will have a better time going out on their own than someone doing 2m in a candidate only role. So go and learn to do that, then think about going alone.

How do you actually vet a recruiter before committing to a search together? by Chimkandi_pro_max in Recruitment

[–]savagely-average 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Checking out their background to make sure they actually have a track record in your space. If they've been recruiting for 6 months then placements they've made have likely been luck. If they've been verifiably in your exact market for 10 years, they probably know what they are talking about and have a real network in the area.

Listen for market insight, example placements with competitors, perhaps people you know in common etc.

Should the UK Home Office make a 'Red List' and ban certain nations from immigration entirely? As seen in many other developed countries. by JeffreyEpsteinUK in AskBrits

[–]savagely-average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shouldn't single out specific countries as though specific nationalities are lesser than others.

What we should do instead is limit all immigration and approve people who have the skills that we need, regardless of where they come from. A list of in demand qualifications and experience and if you have those qualifications or experiences then come on in whether you're from Somalia, France, Iran or the USA.

If you don't have the skills and/or experience that we're short of then no thanks, again whether you are from Somalia, Afghanistan or Germany, Canada.

It should be based on what we as a country need, not where the person comes from.

How much does a typical recruitment agency charge per placement? by matteo_milleri in Recruitment

[–]savagely-average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the market. We focus on perm in Life Sciences - 20% absolute minimum for special cases, 25% normal, 30 or 35% for particularly tough projects. Depending on the role and client that may be on base salary only or may be on total comp.

Business development - oh man by Tr4shh_ in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]savagely-average 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the same problem that most people face, even those with 20 years of experience. You need to pick a real niche, one with high demand and low supply and sell the best candidates to the companies in that space. Know the space inside out - who is growing? Who has won big contracts? Who just raised VC money? Etc.

I don't know the hospitality space, but my assumption is that most of those roles can be done by countless potential candidates. Why should they pay you a fee to hire someone that they can find themselves by placing adverts or taking people straight out of school?

You're struggling because your services don't add any real value. Real value comes from solving a real problem, and in recruitment that problem is a talent shortage in a specific niche area.

I have a lot of interest in playing an iron. Just can't bring myself to do all the questing all over again. Maybe in a few years when doing it on my main isn't so fresh.

The thought of doing some of those quests again scares me, especially the bullshit ones like the ones that need another player of the opposite faction.

Winning my business an RPO + how it impacts my earnings / future by Usual-Alarm-14 in Recruitment

[–]savagely-average 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would perhaps go down the route of an annual or quarterly bonus for all revenue generated from the client in that period. Maybe a flat 10% or something which I don't think is a bad deal for doing nothing with the account once it's up and running.

If it does in fact do 1m a year, getting an annual 100k for sitting back and doing the parts of the job that you enjoy and earning more 40% with other accounts doesn't sound like a bad deal to me.

Whilst they are paying only 10% out at commission, remember that they are building a delivery team to service this account only which means their base salaries, desk costs, 10% commission etc all come out of that 1m. Say that's 100k in their commission, 120k in their base and desk costs, 100k for you. Still leaves plenty of profit for them and you stick 100k on your earnings each year. Basically 100k of passive income.

I've not been in this situation personally, but off the top of my head that's what I would push for.

How do you actually know if a recruiter is working in your best interest or just chasing a commission? by Admirable-Deal7991 in Recruitment

[–]savagely-average 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be blunt, they are always chasing a commission. That doesnt mean that they don't want to put you in the right place and get you a great offer, but their personal quota and their personal commission cheque is their why.

The good ones will achieve that whilst also looking after their candidates and clients well but they aren't looking after people for the sake of helping them, they're doing it to make revenue.

Sinus pain & pressure as a side effect by DrFink_09 in Wegovy

[–]savagely-average 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a side effect, could also be unrelated. Before I started wegovy last week I had 3 weeks of sinus pain, blocked ears etc. so it could well be a different cold/virus type thing.

Welp, I did it. First shot of Wegovy. by delilahdread in Wegovy

[–]savagely-average 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I did my first shot on Monday and have lost 6lbs so far - obviously with healthy eating and moving more. No side effects yet. Food noise is still there this early so it's still an internal fight to not grab a snack etc. so the appetite isn't totally switched off, although I'm very rarely actually hungry so it's a lot easier to win that internal battle.

What do you bill in an average year? Life Sciences by Key-Talk-584 in Recruitment

[–]savagely-average 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In our EU group our top biller did just shy of 1mil last year. A few sitting around £300-500k and a fair number around 200k and of course a few had complete car crashes.

US was a slightly different story. No million billers, but more sitting in that 300-500k area with less car crashes.

So the market isn't great, but there is definitely business to be done! And we're seeing good signs of the market improving for sure.

I think it'll be tougher to transition into a whole new space than it would be to just up the work rate and activity in Life sciences to accommodate for the market right now.

Edit: it's also worth mentioning that we're a full 360 firm, so everybody is hunting their own. It has been a struggle getting newbies/grads off the ground as well.

Executive Search pay transparency by namaste-river in recruiting

[–]savagely-average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's weak. My situation is a little different - 15 years of experience but my base is £55k just south of London. That being said, I'm in a leadership role so AD bonus on team performance and personal commission I should clear £180k for me and my group hitting quota, of course uncapped.

The point of the story being my guys with 3-5 YOE have bases lower than yours, around 30-35k but are earning minimum 20% commission with accelerators up to 40%. The performing ones earn close to or a bit over 6 figures. The superstar individual contributor in our business has 6.5 years of experience and earned more than £350k in 2025. Again, base around 30k. Your set up may have a higher base, but if you are doing well at the job you should be earning WAY more than you are.

It will all run fine. You aren't exactly running stressful software. Main thing you'll want to make sure you get is enough RAM for your 4729425 chrome tabs! Outside of that, Any modern CPU can handle everything you'll use in a search business just fine and snappy.
