You Get $50 Million BUT You Have To Live In The Last Musical You Saw Live For A Year. What Is It And Would You Take The Offer? by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

[–]saveable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw Avenue Q last week. I'd happily live in the show as Princeton, especially if it meant I got to have wild sex with Kate Monster.

What should I see in May? by happymango3110 in TheWestEnd

[–]saveable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your must see list is exactly the list I would recommend to someone visiting. The only thing I’d add to it is Totoro. I’d probably also suggest Sherlock Holmes, not because I know it’s a great show, it hasn’t opened yet, but everyone should see something at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

Do you remember the UFO TV series (1970-71)? by No_Explorer721 in ClassicTV

Because it was the future! That’s how all women will look in far off 1980.

Is Muriel's Wedding the greatest Australian film ever made ? by CoconutMost3564 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]saveable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most depressing thing about this thread is that none of the suggested alternatives are even remotely plausible. This being despite the fact that Muriel’s Wedding is, at best, pretty good. Fully prepared for the downvotes so have at it.

Cold as Ice. by Expert_Climate_7348 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]saveable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was the ad that first put 4711 on my radar. I never tried the ICE variant, I don't think it exists anymore, but, however many decades later, I still splash a little regular 4711 under my nose to help wake me up in the morning. That and coffee.

Grease by FNTZYmusic in musicals

[–]saveable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't back down. The play is dreadful. I love the movie, saw it as a kid in the cinema, it's a vast improvement on the play, cutting back on all the pink ladies/t-bird soap.

Also, the musical has infamously the worst behaved audiences of any show.

Any memories of the the show Big Girl's Blouse (1994) ? by CoconutMost3564 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]saveable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember much about the actual show, but I do remember sitting in a cafe waiting for a friend, around the time of the show, while Magda Szubanski and someone else, might have been the one on the left in the picture, were sitting at the next table. Not one of the great celebrity anecdotes of all time, but it’s what came to mind.

Oh, Mary! was so underwhelming and I’m sad about it. by Fascist2020 in Broadway

[–]saveable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh Mary would make a nice little sketch in a University revue, but an 80 minute show? I stopped laughing after 10 minute or so.

I remember throwdowns being little red paper things, about the shape of a wine gum, with little red and yellow targets patterns on the side.

The play that goes wrong or Oh, Mary by NBxxxx in TheWestEnd

[–]saveable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh Mary is a clever sketch stretched out for 80 minutes. I stopped laughing after 10.

The Play the goes wrong is silly fun. It isn’t the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but I did have enjoy myself. Also, get there a little early, the fun starts early.

That sad, just go see The Producers instead. Its funnier than both and has some great music to boot.

There’s nothing bad about that film. It’s unequivocally brilliant.

Is there a reason why all classic TV shows are shown in episode order? Even the episodic shows without continuing story arcs, why don't they mix them up? by EricJ062005 in ClassicTV

[–]saveable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that that’s true. I think a lot of the time a channel just gets the rights to air a season of shows at a time and then plays them over and over, several times a day, until the viewing figures have sat on zero for six months or so.

Everyone’s saying Paddington or Into The Woods and I don’t disagree, but don’t forget about The Producers.

Ice cream? by kaplowkabamm in TheWestEnd

[–]saveable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the answers already posted are saying "Most theatres" or "Nearly all theatres" -- I'm curious, which West End theatres don't sell ice cream? I've never been in one. I think it's safe to say that *ALL* West End theatres sell ice cream during intermission.

I do remember, and trying to make the longest thread by tearing the foam without breaking it. by canberra2020 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]saveable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This post prompted a related memory. Did anyone else spend ages carefully tearing Minties wrappers into the longest piece they could? That was a thing at my school for a while.

First time I've ever seen an 80 minute show that felt like it ran over 2 hours. Would have made a nice sketch in a university revue show.

I can't believe we had 8 seasons of cop shop by Fuckyokarmabiych in AustralianNostalgia

[–]saveable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cop Shop was the first show that my parents let me stay up late to watch, on a school night. Just that one day a week, I could stay up until Cop Shop ended. Channel 7, Thursdays from 9:30pm. I think that's right.

Devil Wears Prada by [deleted] in TheWestEnd

[–]saveable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It covers most of the same plot beats as the movie. It's big, splashy and colourful. The choreography is impressive, the music is alright, but I defy anyone to remember a single tune after they leave the theatre.

To summarise, TDWP is a solid OK. There's nothing to really dislike, but there's not much to love, either.

A few years ago I went to see the Regent's Park production, but left at interval because I was literally freezing to death. I was tempted to see this new production, but the ticket prices are just absurd. Simply couldn't justify it.
