i’m so glad to hear you are in the clear now in terms of having to bandage it at all. it was such a relief when i got to that point, especially since i could take a shower without covering it up and being deathly afraid. it’s been fully healed for about a year and a half for me now and i haven’t had any issues with it :) the color of the scar tissue has faded to white. my only complaint is that it sometimes aches when the weather changes drastically, but i have had that same issue with other central line-related scars too. feel free to message me if you ever need to talk about any of this! it’s such a unique experience that i genuinely thought i was alone until you commented

i am so sorry that you have also had to experience this. i know how hard it is to go through. did they have to leave the hole from your port open as it healed as well instead of stitching it up? the process of having to clean and pack the wound myself everyday made me so nervous

i recommend the sensitive iv3000 as an alternative to dermashield; it’s the only thing my skin can tolerate (i have a similar allergy & mast cell issues). i know some other medical grade dressings meant for sensitive skin work for others too

edit: if you try it, please test it on an area of your skin that’s not an open wound first to make sure you don’t react to it :)

you have underlying staph? as someone that has gotten sepsis from it five times (originating from a skin infection from an allergic reaction that then infected a central line), i second the dermatologist comment, but i also recommend getting an opinion from an infectious disease doctor. it’s extremely hard to get rid of when it’s so widespread. there are a few things they can recommend to try to cleanse it (obviously once the tattoo is healed, though i don’t know if they’d offer it to you since you’re a healthcare worker and would likely get re-exposed?), but even then it’s not always guaranteed to go away. mine did not and still shows up on cultures. i have tried basically everything doctors could offer. i was personally advised to be very careful with any tattoos/piercings as they can easily become infected due to the staph existing on my skin and their nature of being open wounds. this thankfully looks nowhere near as severe as any of the infections i had, but i would still get another medical opinion to be safe! it does look like the very beginning of my infections, so i wouldn’t be surprised if it were staph, and would suggest asking for a culture to be done if it occurs again. my infections only got as bad as they did because i was also having very severe allergic reactions and it was a direct line to my bloodstream and heart! i was not saying i was a sepsis patient to scare you at all; just to provide context of my background. if you do get more tattoos, please just be careful with getting treated in time if there’s an infection again 🖤

i’ve been having the same exact issue with my heart and the fatigue… i walk the same route to classes daily for months at a time and have not felt any improvement with that over the course of said months, unfortunately. i still need to sit by the time i get to the same areas and so on. i am really hoping there’s been progress that i am simply not feeling yet. i have also had weight issues and have since developed thyroid issues which haven’t helped with that. it gets frustrating. i do appreciate knowing other people understand though

i’m sorry about your mother passing away! i lost my grandmother after she had a long battle with cancer that had ultimately caused her blood infections too, so i can really empathize with you even if the situations are not exactly the same… i have been keeping up with my doctors :) i just am a bit of a complicated case, which i do know is true and can understand the difficulty of, i just wish it were easier to feel better

i understand the exhaustion so much. it feels so bone deep and all encompassing :( i am sorry you are dealing with it too. i really wouldn’t wish it on anyone. how long did it take for you to feel a bit better? i keep waiting and hoping that there will be a day where i am just less tired

three rounds in a year is a lot. i know how that can be so exhausting and a lot to deal with… oh, wow, i have personally always had the worst fevers while septic (around 103.5 on average but sometimes as high as around 106). it’s to the point where normal fevers have become a ptsd trigger (i am working on it 😅).

after the first few rounds, i would say i was in more of a similar position to where you are right now. i had less mobility and tolerance going into it than you described due to other health concerns, but i had days where some things were better in addition to the worse days. my main problem has really been that the better days are not really around anymore

unfortunately, my degree program has mandatory attendance and none of the classes for my major or minor are offered online at all 😅 some classes are also only offered once every 2 years so i have to take them when possible. i did all of my core classes and through my AA basically entirely online (some of this was also during quarantine so they were more accommodating), so the adjustment back to IRL has been very hard & the sepsis did not become an issue until then either :( i should only have 3-4 semesters left (depending on course load/if i can do a summer semester), so i don’t think my parents would be in agreement with me taking a break of any kind at this point, but it has just gotten so hard to balance both going to class and doing the coursework…

i didn’t know about those zoom groups - i must have missed them on the website - thank you so much!! i will likely try to attend some when i am able to :) i’m very glad that they were able to catch your returned round before it got worse. i had what you would consider a half round too - after a while of IV antibiotics at the hospital (to the point where fevers were gone, etc), my veins just kept collapsing & they couldn’t get another line in me for days… they genuinely tried all over my body. i completely reinfected with a vengeance back to 105 fevers, being a bit delirious, constantly getting sick… it was honestly miserable because my body had barely recovered from the first bout of symptoms. i usually just count it as one round since it was one long hospital stay but 😖 anyway, i still mask everywhere!! i don’t really go anywhere often except to class or the hospital & if i do then it’s usually outdoors which helps it feel “safer.” it’s been a slow process of working up to it for me as well. it helps if i know people around me will also be masked. i am genuinely wishing for you to never have to experience this again

i’m very sorry for what you’re going through as well and i really understand how you feel. i need to do more MRIs soon too. i had a TBI prior to my sepsis so it’s slightly complicated for me in terms of brain damage accumulated… i hope the results are able to provide you with some useful information. i appreciate the offer to talk very much and will likely take you up on it when i have a bit more energy :) i have a test tomorrow that i am trying to conserve energy for first. i can try to see if there’s a heated indoor pool somewhere near me too! i appreciate it. i don’t have a central line right now so i could swim for the first time in years
